The tail, members 30 are of course bent along their lower edges to form the horizontal tail planes 36.
The toy is supported upon apair of front running wheels 37 which are secured upon a live. axle 38 having a crank 39 formed centrally thereof and of course positioned interiorly ot' the body, and 40 is a slot pressed from the rocker arm 2t and through which the crank extends so that the arm rocks under the influence of the rotative movement of the crank.
t1. and 12 are the two forward planes or wings each being furnished upon their inner corners with lugs a3 and 4A which extend over the outer side faces of the turned down portions 10 and 17, aligned orifices and 46 being furnished in the lugs and turned down members so that the wings may be pivotally mounted upon the toy by a pair of rods which each cxtend through such aligned pairs of orifices. In order to simplify the construction of my toy I have made each of these rod members 47 of U shaped form. their free ends *8 being bent at right angles to the main portion and when the toy is being assembled it is only necessary to hold a wing so that the orifices in its lugs coincide with the orifices in the body and compress the free ends of one of the U shaped members 47 together so that it can be inserted up into the body and when it is in position may spring outwardly so that the bent ends 48 pass through the orifices and 4G and so swingably secure the wing upon the body, and the other wing is of course secured in place in a similar manner. In order that the wings may have a flapping movement when the toy is propelled along a surface I connect them to the rocker arm 24 in the following manner.
Upon each of the pair of members which constitutes the rocker arm 2t I form a transverse lug 49 in the vicinity of the rear edges of the wings and I also form the lugs 4L4 upon the wings o't extended form and bent upwardly to a slight degree to constitute arms, and 50 and 5t are links connccting the lugs 4-9 to the respective arms upon the wings. It will be readily seen as the rocker arm it oscillates under the influence of the crank 39 that the links 50 and 51 will move upwardly and downwardly and flap the wings. As the head and shoulders of the pilot are termed to bob into and out of the body an orifice is furnished in the member 3 and the mechanism is so constructed that the pilots head projects above the body when the wings are down and bobs into the body when the wings are up. To give the device a more realistic appearance I furnish a freely mounted propeller 5 upon the outer end of the propeller rod 27, the propeller being constructed of very light material such as celluloid so that it will freely rotate of its own accord as the toy is propelled forwardly From the 'loregoing description it will be seen that I have constructed a toy combining the principal features of an automobile and a flying machine and in which the wings will fiap and the pilot move as the toy is propelled forwardly, and im'thermorc I have devised a toy of extremely simple construction and of a form which can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is:
A toy of the character described comprising a body member simulating a combination of an enclosed automobile and flying machine, said body member which comprises a hood, passenger conu'iartment and fuselage being formed of a unitary piece of material running wheels upon which the body is mounted, a tail member mounted upon a running wheel and pivot'ally secured to the rear end of the fuselage, wings simulating flying machine wings swingably mounted upon the body. a rocker arm positioned within the body and connected to the running wheels so that it oscillates as the toy is propelled. a figure formed in the rocker arm to simulate the driver of the toy, and means connecting the rocker arm to the wings so that the wings flap as the rocker arm oscillates when the toy is ropelted.
