A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described in which a thermostatically controlled valve prevents the retaining in open position of the burner fuel supply valve in the event the pilot light should be extinguished.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description pro cecds, our invention resides in the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the hercind sclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims. In the accompanying drawings, we have llustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of our invention constructed accordin to the best mode we have so far devised or the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:

As the operation of our improved device will be readily obvious from the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings. further discussion is deemed unnecessary.
1. In a device of the class described, a fuel supply connectable with a burner, means for connecting the fuel supply with the burner, and means for flashing an igniting et of flame toward the burner, said first named means automatically disconnecting the fuel supply from the burner after a predetermined period of operation.
2, In a device of the class described, a fuel supply connectable with a burner, a continually burning pilot light, means for connecting the fuel supply with the burner for a predetermined period, and means for flashing an igniting jet of flame toward the burner, the igniting jet of flame being lit from the pilot light.
3. In a device of the class described. a fuel supply connectable with a burner, a continually burning pilot light, means for connecting the fuel supply with the burner for a predetermined period, and means for flashing an igniting jet of flame toward the burner, said means being inoperative in the event the pilot should be extinguished.
4. In a device of the class described. a fuel supply connectable with a burner. a continually burning pilot light, means for connecting the fuel sup l v with the burner for a predetermined period, means for flashing an igniting jet of flame toward the burner, and thermostatically operated means for rendering said first named means inoperative upon extinguishing of the 'pilot light.
5. In a device of the character described, a fuel supply, a valve within the fuel supply and operable to connect the same with a burner, actuating means operable to sustain the valve open to connect the burner with the fuel supply for a predetermined time, manually operable means remote from the burner and remote from said valve and cooperable with the actuating means for moving the same to valve opening position. said actuating means ern'iitting the closing of the valve after said time interval.
(5. In a device of the class described. a burner fuel supply, a valve positioned within said supply for eonne 'ting the same with a burner, a dash pot member operable ti move said valve to a position connecting the burner in a fuel supply, said dash pot member permitting the return of said valve to closed position after the elapse of a predetermined time interval, and means accelerating the return action of the dash pot member as it nears its limit of movement to effect quick closing of the valve.
7. In a device of the class described. a burner fuel supply having a control valve therein, dash pot means operable to retain the control valve open a predetermined period. said means including a plunger engageable with the control valve, and means imparting a quick action to the plunger lltl when the same nears its limit of movement.
8. In a device of the character described, a burner fuel supply, a control valve in the fuel supply, dash pot means operable to retain the control valve open a predetermined period, said means including a plunger engageable with the control valve, and means imparting a quick action to the plunger when the same nears its limit of movement.
9. In a device of the class described, a burner fuel supply, a control valve in the fuel supply, dash pot means operable to retain the control valve open for a redetermined period, said means including a plunger cooperable with the control valve, a dial having periods of time delineated thereon, means connected with said plunger and cooperating with said dial whereby the same may be set to retain the fuel supply open any set period of time, and means accelerating the return action of the plunger as the same approaches the limit of the period to which the plunger has been previously set.
10. In a device of the class described, a burner fuel supply, a control valve in the fuel supply, gageahle with the control valve to maintain the same in open position, a time element cooperable with said means for retainin the same in valve opening position for a predetermincd period of time, and means efl'ecting quick closing of the control valve when the limit of said predetermined period of time is reached, a pilot burner, and means for effecting closure of the control valve when the pilot burner is extinguished irrespective of the manipulation of the manually operable means and of the adjustment of the time element.
11. The combination with a burner and a fuel supply conduit therefor, of a valve interposed in said conduit, spring means tending to seat said valve, cable means manu ally operable from a distant point of control for opening said valve, and a time element operatively associated with said cable means for holding said valve in open position for a rcdetermined time and for automatically ell zzcting quick release and closing thereof at the expiration of such time.
12. In a devi e of the character described, a fuel supply, a valve within the fuel supply and operable to connect the same with a burner, means normally urging the valve to closed position, means operable to sustain the valve'open against said closing means to connect the burner with the fuel supply for a predetermined time and permitting the quick closing of the valve by its closing means after said time interval. a pilot burner and a thermostatic control lnfluenced by the pilot burner to effect closure of the valve when the pilot burner is extinguished.
13. The combination with a gas burner and housing therefor having an aperture manually operable means en adjacent said burner, of a gas apcomprising a casing having a passage therethrough, a spring actuated valve 1n said passage for opening and closing the same, a pilot burner carried by said casing, thermo-res onsive means associated with said pilot urner, means interposed between said thermo--responsive means and said valve for rendering the operation of the latter dependent upon that of the former, means for attaching said casing to said burner housing to operatively position said ilot burner with respect to the aperture of the housing and to the main burner, said housing having inlet and outlet openings for connecting said passage with the gas supply and said main burner respectively and also having an opening for conneiting the pilot burner with the gas supply.
14. The combination with a gas burner and housing therefor having an aperture therein adajacent said burner, of a gas appliance comprising a casing having a passage therethrough, a spring actuated valve in said passage for opening and closing the same, a pilot burner carried by said casing, thermo-responsive means associated with said pilot burner, means interposed between said thermo-rsponsive means and said valve for rendering the operation dependent upon that of the former, means for attaching said casing to said burner housing to operatively position said ilot burner with respect to the aperture of the housing and to the main burner, said casing having inlet and outlet openings for connecting said passage. with the gas sup ly and said main burner respectively and a so having an opening for connecting the pilot burner with the gas supply, all of said parts aforementioned as constituting said applianee being assembled as a unitary structure bodily attachable in operative position.
15. The combination with a burner and a supply conduit therefor, of a valve interposed in said conduit, spring means normally tending to seat said valve, cable means manually operable from a distant point of control for opening said valve, a time element 0 erativelv associated with said cable means or holding said valve in open position for a predetermined length of time and for automatically effecting quick release and closing of the valve at the expiration of such time, a pilot burner, and thermo static means influenced by the pilot burner for effecting closure of the valve when the pilot burner is extinguished.
16. The combination with a burner and a supply conduit therefor, of a valve inter posed in saidiconduit, spring means tending to seat said valve, a pilot burner, thermoresponsive means associated with said pilot burner, means interposed between a said thermo-responsive means and said valve for therein pliance of the latter rendering the operation of the latter dependent upon that of the former, cable means manually operable from a distant point of control for opening said valve, and a time element operatively associated with said cable means for holding said valve in open position for a predetermined length of time and for automatically releasing said valve at the expiration of such time.
17. A control for burners comprising valve means controlling the supply of fuel to the burner: a time element operatively associated with the valve means and settable to maintain the valve means open for variable periods. and a manually operable control device remote from the burner and from the valve means and operatively associated with the time element, the time element and the manually operable control device having a connection with the valve means whereby the valve means may be opened under the control of the manually operable control device and held in open position under the control of the time element for a predetermined time and yet permitted to close at the expiration of such predetermined time.
18. A control for burners comprising valve means controlling the supply of fuel to the burner, a time element operatively associated with the valve means and settable to maintain the valve means open for variable periods, a manually operable control device remote from the burner and from the valve means and operatively associated with the time element and with the valve means whereby the valve means may be opened under the control of the manually operable control device and held in open position for a predetermined time and yet permitted to close at the expiration of such predetermined time under the control of the time element, and means other than the time element for effecting closure of the valve means when the time element releases the valve means at the expiration of the selected time interval.
