Description

Afig. 7, v192s. 1,679,391
. N. AAS
. INSTRUMENT FOR ADMINISTERING MEDICINES TO ANIMALS Filed Sgpt. 5, 1927 Patented Aug. 7, 1928.
UNITED. STATES NIIiS AAS, F SKARNES, NORWAY.
INSTRUMENT FOR ADMINISTERING MEDICINES T0 ANIMALS.
Application filed September 3, 1927, Serial No. 217,471, and in Germany February 16, 1927.
This invention has for its object an instrument for administering medicines or food to horses and other animals.
This instrument. comprises a container of metal or other rigid material for the solid, liquid or pasty medicines or food to be administered, a piston movable in said container, an operating rod on said piston, a rigid tubular extension on the said container enclosing the piston rod and a handle on the piston rod.
An important feature of this instrument consists therein that the bottom of the container encircling the piston rod has a conical cavity into which fits a conical projection on the underside of the piston. The effect of this arrangement is to prevent liquid material passing from the container through possible passages between piston and container wall from flowing into the tubular extension when the piston is in the bottom position in the container.
Another important feature consists therein that the length of the piston rod and the handle on same is so proportioned in relation to the tubular extension on the container that the handle extends outside of the said tube when the piston is in the top position.
The purpose of the arrangement is to make so the instrument as short as possible so that it can be conveniently carried.
Other important features of the invention will be explained in the following description with reference to the accompanying drawing.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawing.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of the instrument. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views of structional details.
In the illustrated example 1 is the medicine container, 2 is the piston slidably arranged therein, 3 is the piston rod and 4 is the handle of the instrument constituting a widened extension of the rod. The tubular guide sleeve 5 is at the inner end conically widened so as to form a seat for the conically shaped inner end 7 of the piston rod. The tube has a hole 8 through which cleansing liquid can be introduced.
The piston 2 can be secured in its bottom position when the cone 7 fits tight into the seat 6 by means of a wedge 9 inserted through the hole 10 in the rod 4.
When the instrument is used the piston is placed in the bottom position (Fig. 3) and the wedge 9 inserted. The medicine is poured into the container 1.
The operator catches the rod 4 and inserts the container into the mouth of the animal. T hen he removes the wedge and pulls the rod until it stops. the container and the liquid is poured into the throat of the animal.
The length of the tube 5 is so proportioned that when the instrument has been introduced into the mouth to the root of the tongue only a very small portion (for example about 2 cm.) projects out from between the front teeth of the animal.
The entire length of the instrument is when constructed as described for use for horses only about 40 centimeters, so that it can be conveniently carried in an ordinary instrument bag.
The apparatus is suitably made of aluminum but also other rigid materials may be used. When the apparatus is constructed as above described, it is not necessary to fit the piston completely tight in the container by grinding because the cone 7 placed in the seat 6 will make a sulficiently tight seal in the period before theinstrument has been placed in the mouth of the animal. The emptying of the medicine into the mouth of the animal is effected in such a short time that the quantity of liquid leaking between the piston and the cylinder wall if any will be quite small.
Claims;
1. An instrument for administering solid as well as liquid medicine and food to horses and other animals, comprising a tubular metal medicine container provided with a conical seat on one end thereof, a tubular metal guide extending from said container and communicating therewith, a piston slidably arranged in said container, said piston having a conical projection on one face thereof adapted to fit into said conical seat when said piston is at one end of said container, a rod on said piston freely slidable in said guide, and an operating handle on the outer end of said piston rod.
The piston moves forward in 2. An instrument as set forth in claim 1 3. An instrument as set forth in claim 1 characterized by the provision of a piston characterized by the provision of a tubular rod having a slot at a point in the length guide having an opening in the wall thereof thereof located beyond the extremity of said for the introduction of a cleansing agent.
5 tubular guide when said piston is positioned In testimony whereof I have signed my on the conical seat, said slot being adapted name to this specification. for the insertion of a wedge for locking the rod and piston in fixed position. 7 NILS AAS.
