application filed February 19, 1923. Serial No. curses.
My invention relates to drilling apparatus.
Ithas for its object to provide an improved drilling apparatus. A further object of my invention is to provide such an apparatus which is especially and conveniently adapted to use in oil well or similar drilling practice and which at the same time is capable of drillingto great depths, the
same comprising an improved apparatus which is very compactly and powerfully .built and also conveniently arranged and controlled. A still further object of my in- I vention is to provide such an apparatus of the core drill type which is especially adapted to oilwell or similar drilling practice at great depths. These and other objects and advantages of my improved .con-,
struction will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings. I have shown for purposes of illustration one em bodiment which my invention may assume in practice. I
In these drawings, r Fig. 1 is a front elevation ofthe apparahis in position over a.hole the drill rods being omitted. to
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the apparatus in the same position. Fig. 3 is aside elevation site side of the apparatus.
Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the interlocking connection between certain control rods.
Fig. 5 is a plan view partially in section of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. 1
Fig. 6 is a rear elevation partially in section of the apparatus, certain parts being broken away to show the transmission mechanism.
In this illustrative construction, while it will be evident "that other feeding mechanism may be used, I have shown my invention applied to a well known Sullivan type of hydraulically fed core drilling mechanism including a usua-l'feed cylinder 1 having usual water connections, usual rod connections 2 and 3 and a clamp 4 adapted to receive the drill rods and permit the same to be rotated or passed upwardly or downwardly through the mechanism, this drilling from the oppomechanism being mounted and driven in an improved manner hereinafter described.
Referring more particularly to my improved construction, it will be noted that a trackway 5 having longitudinally disposed slots 6 therein is carried on a support 7, herein in the form of cross ties, and that this track carries a frame indicated generally at 8 which in turn carries the complete drilling mechanism, suitable guiding shoes 9 belng provided on the bottom of the frame to engage the tracks 5 and fit over the upper surface thereof as shown, the frame 8 being held in any desired relation on. the track \5 by bolt connections 10 which when released are movable longitudinally inthe slots 6 in such manner as to enable the frame 8 to be adjusted into any desired position upon the tracks. If desired the frame 8 may be adjusted manually longitudinally of the track- Way or adjusted by power through any suitable means, but I prefer to provide for power movement of the frame by hydraulic means, the same preferably being connected as hereinafter described, to the same source of water which supplies water to the hydraulic cylinder 1. As shown, I also provide a cyl inder 11 fixed to the bottom of the frame 8 and having therein'a cooperating piston 12 provided. with a rod 13 fixed at 14 to the rearmost tie 7, the water flow connections 15 being of any usual form adapted to supply water to the opposite sides of the piston 12 in such manner as to cause the frame 8 to move longitudinally of, the trackway in either direction desired. 4
Referring more particularly to the frame 8 and the mechanism thereon, itwill be noted thatthis frame is of a very strong and rigid construction including parallel pieces of structural steel'16 connected together at their top and bottom, the cons ruction being such that from the ends of the members 16 access may be readily had to the nuts on top of the bolt connections 10 to enable release or tightening of these connections when desired. More particularly, itwill be noted that four standards 17 each herein in the form of a plurality of angle irons connected with their webs, together are supportedon the members 16 in such manner as to form a rectangular hollow frame and that these members 17 are posed vertically at the rear of the engine in connected at the bottom and top by tie members 18 and braced by suitable braces 19 and 20, the construction resulting in an exceedingly strong and rigid frame well adapted to support the drilling mechanism and to withstand the strains and stresses incident to the operation of the latter and to longi tudinal shifting on the trackway through the powerful hydraulic shifting means previously described.
Upon the top of this frame 8 is the vertical drilling apparatus including the cylinder 1, the mechanism here being supported on a suitable frame 21 rigidly connected to base frames 23 and 24 of which the base frame 23 carries one of the supporting standards 25 of a hoist drum 26 disposed on an axis extending transversely of the trackway in rear of the cylinder 1, while the base frame 24 supports the other drum standard 27 and also supports a suitable driving motor 28. Referring more particularly to the latter, it will be noted that the same is herein in the form of a steam engine of the angle type having one cylinder 29 disposed horizontally and longitudinally of one edge of the frame 8 and another cylinder 30 dissuch manner as to bring its crank shaft at the rear of the frame, the cylinders carrying their usual pistons and being controlled by usual valve gear and supplied through pipe connections 31 with steam from a boiler (not shown) usually accompanying such an outfit. Operatively connected to this engine 28 are the driving connections for rotating the rotating members 2 and 3 of the drilling apparatus. More particularly, it will be noted that, as shown in Fig. 6, the engine shaft 32 has keyed thereto a sleeve 33 on a pinion 34 and that this sleeve is journaled in suitable bearings 35 and provided with a bore within the pinion adapted to receive a cylindrical end 36 of a cross shaft, generally indicated at 37 suitably journaled in the frame. As shown, the adjacent portion of this shaft is a hexagonal. portion 38 carrying a clutch member 39 in the form of a pinion having internal teeth 40 and external teeth 41 and adjustable longitudinally of the hexagonal portion to bring the internal teeth into or out of mesh with the teeth of the pinion 34 or the external teeth into or out of mesh with a larger spur gear 42 keyed on a parallel transverse shaft 43 suitably journaled in the frame and rotated by a larger spur gear 44 keyed to the shaft and constantly meshing with the pinion 34, the member 39 being adjusted by a suitable clutch shipper 45 adjustable by mechanism hereinafterdescribed. Carried adjacent the member 39 and likewise fixed to and rotatable with the hexagonal portion 38 of the shaft 37 is also a still larger spur gear 46 which turn meshes with a pinion 47 similar to the member 39 and splined on the shaft 43 and movable longitudinally thereof into or out of engagement'with the gear 46 by means of a clutch. shipper 48. Thus, it
will be noted that shifting the pinion 39' into engagement with the pinion 34 directly connects the engine to the shaft 37, while sliding the pinion 39 to the right meshes it with gear 42 and causes a drive through the gears 34, '44, 42, and member 39, giving a slower speed. Further, by throwing the gear 47 to the right as shown in Fig. 6, a still lower speed is obtainable. As shown, the shaft 37 also has a cylindrical portion 49 thereon on which is keyed a bevel pinion 50 meshing with a bevel gear 51 carried on the rear end of a.longitudinally extending shaft 52 (see Fig. 2) which in turn is connected through bevel gearing 53 to the rotating parts of the drilling mechanism, a usual clutch 54 also being provided to enable disconnection of the rotating mechanism from its driving mechanism when desired and this clutch preferably also has a shear pin 55 between one of its elements and the shaft to prevent breakageunder severe operating conditions.
Operatively connected to the shaft 37 is also the drum driving mechanism for the drum 26, the same herein preferably including a usual form of friction clutch generally indicated at 56 and controlled by a suitable thereof as desired. In the particular form of my invention shown, it will be noted that the member 58 of the clutch mechanism 56 carries a ring 62 between which and the shipper 57 'a plurality of suitable lever mechanisms 63 are connected as shown, the ring being adapted to be held in different positions by a set screw 64. As also shown, one of the elements of each lever mechanism engages with a late 65 to press the same into contact wit annular member 66 on the external clutch member 59, the movement of the latter being in turn controlled by a brake band 67 operatively connected to a plurality of spring pressed plungers or lifters 68 normally acting to keep the brake band from the brake wheel. Attention should here also be directed to the fact that through the clutch an internally extending 56 it is made possible to rotate the drum 26 nism used for winding purposes and including capstans 69, usually called ni ger heads? or cat heads. As shown, t ese members are carried on the opposite ends of a transverse shaft 7 0 having a spur gear 71 thereon adjustable longitudinally of the shaft by a suitable shipper 72 into or out of engagement with a spur gear 73 keyed on the adjacent end of the shaft 43, the construction being such that the rotation of the shaft 70 is controlled by the shifting of the gear 71 previously described. Attention is also directed to the fact that each of these nigger or cat heads is provided with a brake band 74 controllable by a suitable brake lever 75, the brake band and control lever being herein for example located adjacent the head or drum. As shown a suitable lever 76 at the rear of the machine is also provided to adjust the shipper 7 2. In connection with the driving mechanism fthus far described and extending transverselyacross the rear of the frame, attention is directed to the fact that the whole transmission mechanism including the change speed is enclosed in a suitable casing 77 adapted to be substantially filled with lubricant in such manner as to maintain a lubricant supply to all the gearing. It will also be noted that a suitable oil pump 78 of any well known construction is provided operatively connected to a moving part of the motor, herein to the crank shaft thereof, which operates to maintain a flow of lubricant to all the necessary parts ofthe apparatus including the engine, drum and drilling mechanism through connections not shown.
Operatively associated with the mechanism just described is also improved controlling mechanism. This mechanism is so far as possible preferably located at the front right hand corner of the mechanism in such an'arrangement as to be most readily accessible'to the drillersuperintending the drilling operation.
More particularly, it includes a lever 79 suitably pivoted on a horizontal axis at 80 and pivotally connected through a lever connecton 81 to a rod 82 controlling the operation of the friction clutch. It further includes levers 83, 84 pivoted on a common horizontal axis adjacent their inner ends and having shorter arms connected at 85 and S6 to rods 87, 88 which in turn lead to hell cranks 89, 90 connected through connections not shown to the shippers 45, 48 for the gears 39, 47. In order to prevent simultaneous connection of these gears, it
will also be noted that an interlock is provided, a sliding pin 91 being disposed in a suitable recess in a boss formed on the standard 25 between the rods 87, 88 and adapted pivoted at 97 is connected to the clutch brake hand through a usual eccentric connection. As for the drill feeding mechanism, this is controlled through a suitable control lever 98 likewise accessible from the same corner of the front end of the frame, while the speed of the motor is controlled by a throttle lever .99 similarly located. Here it will also be noted that the lever 98 controls the water supply to the cylinder through a 4-way valve 100, suitably connected to the cylinder and the water inlet and outlet, while the water supply to the cylinder 1 and cylinder 11 is controlled by a lever 101 in turn controlling a four-way valve 102 connected to the inlet and discharge pipes for the cylinder 1 and similarly connected to cylinder '11 and a suitable source of supply.
In the operation of my improved machine, it is possible to move the drill back from the hole whenever desired by shifting the frame 8 relative to the trackway 5 through the hydraulic feeding mechanism, the parts being capable ofbeing clamped in any desired position by the bolt connections 10. Moreover, it will be noted that due to the dispositon of the drum 26, the drum is enabled to wind on without difliculty in any positionof the frame 8 relative to the trackway. As for the drilling mechanism, it will be observed that the same may be rotated at any one of a plurality of speeds, herein three, to adapt it to varying conditions, while the feed thereof may obviously be varied over the usual wide range possible with a hydraulic feeding mechanism, my improved feeding mechanism herein. being preferably of a well known Sullivan type. It "will also be evident that the changes in speed may be utilized in connection with the drum and that other variations in speed may be obtained through the friction clutch 56 controlling the connection of the latter and that this clutch and the clutch 54 may be disconnected when desired to enable simultaneous operation pf the drum and controlling mechanism, or independent operation of either, each of the clutches also being releasable uponoverload in suchmanner as to protect the mechanism from breakage. Attention is also directed to the control of speed herein made possible in the use of the nigger heads or cat heads through the independent braking mechanism foreach head. Here it will also be observed that these heads are conveniently located for operations in handling casing, rods, orthe like through cooperation if need be with the drum 26. As
for the control mechanism, it will be particularly noted that this mechanism is especially conveniently located relative to the most desirable position for the operator, namely at the front right hand side of the machine, the disposition of the controls being such that the operator may adjust every mechanism except the cat head mechanism from this station.
As a result of my improved construction it will be observed that an exceedingly rugged mechanism is provided whereby through my improved arrangement of parts the different needed elements are so located as to perform their functions most effectively and at the same time present an exceedingly compact mechanism of great strength especially adapted to use in deep holes, although obviously it is not limited to such use. Attention is also directed to the fact that by my improved arrangement of parts and more particularly my improved disposi tion of the control mechanism, it is made possible for the operator to control all the various mechanisms quickly and easily when and as needed without necessitating his leaving his post near the drill hole. Moreover, through the use of the shiftable frame, it will be noted that the entire mechanism may be moved away from the drill hole as is found to be highly desirable in well drilling practice and that this movement may be obtainable whenever the operator desires and quickly and easily through the hydraulic mechanism. These and other advantages of my improvement will, however, be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
WVhile I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice,-it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various hole drilling mechanism carried on said iother forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
