UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED D. HOLDSWORTH, OF CLAREMONT. NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO SULLIVAN MACHINERY COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
COOLING SYSTEM.
Application filed August 20, 1926. Serial No. 130,526.
This invention relates to cooling systems and more particularly to an auxiliary heater for the cooling system of portable gasoline driven compressor outfits.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved auxiliary Water heater for the cooling system of a portable gasoline driven compressor outfit. Another object of this invention is to provide a portable gasoline driven compressor outfit having improved means for heating and circulating the cooling liquid for the gasoline engine and compressor cylinders prior to the starting of the engine and compressor during extremely cold weather. These and other objects and advantages of my invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown for purposes of illustration one form which my invention may assume in practice.
In this drawing,-
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a portable compressor outfit in which one embodiment of my invention is incorporated.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail viewof a portion of my improved heating device for the compressor and engine cooling system.
In this illustrative embodiment of my invention I have shown a wheeled truck frame 1 having mounted thereon a usual gasoline engine 2 and a usual air compressor 3, the engine 2 being adapted to drive the air compressor 3 through suitable connections, (not shown). As shown in Fig. 1 mounted at the forward end of the wheeled truck 1 is a radiator 4: of usual form and the bottom of this radiator is connected in a usual manner through a pipe connection 5 with a usual water circulation pump 6' driven from the engine 2 in a well known manner. Connected .to the pump 6 is a pipe connection 7 through which fluid is conducted from the pump to the water jacket of the gasoline engine, the water flowing from the engine water jacket at the top thereof through a pipe connection 8 leading to an ejector casing 9 to be later described, the latter in turn beingconnected to the water jacket of the air compressor 3. The cooling fluid flows from the air compressor water jacket through a return pipe 10 connected to the top of the radiator 4.
To heat the circulating water for the gasoline engine and compressor up to the proper temperature prior to the starting of the same, for instance in the morning and when the temperature is extremely cold, I have provided improved auxiliary heating means comprising a small gas or oil stove 11 having mounted thereon a boiler 12, the upper end of the latter being connected through a pipe connection 13 to an ejector nozzle 14 disposed in a suitable manner within the casing 9. This stove and boiler may be mounted directly on the ground adjacent the compressor or if desired may be suitably carried by the wheeled truck frame 1. A stop valve 15 and check valve 16 are preferably arranged between the pipe connection 13 and the nozzle 14 to permit shutting off the cooling system from the boiler, and automatic starting of steam flow when valve 15 is open, respectively. A suitable safety valve 17 may be provided on the boiler 12. v
Heretofore when it was desired to initially start the gasoline driving engine for the compressor, as for instance, in the morning during extremely cold weather, it was found that the gasoline engine was hard to start and due to the unusually large cooling area was slow in bringing the cooling liquid up to the proper tem perature after starting. To overcome this the improved auxiliary heater is provided, it being only necessary to light the gas or oil stove 11, and steam is then generated within the boiler 12, the steam flowing from this boiler through the ejector nozzle whereby the water is warmed, the inwardly discharging jet of steam causing a circulation and the warming up of the water in the whole system. Starting is thus facilitated. After the engine is started the fire beneath the boiler 12 may be extinguished or, if desired, the heater may be kept in operation for a short time after starting to bring the temperature'up to the normal running point more promptly. These and other uses and advantages of my improved auxiliary heater will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and, embodied in various other forms without departing from itsspirit or the scope of the appended claims.
