This invention relates to garment pressing machines and particularly machines for pressing shirts and has for its ob ec t a machine in which one or more intermed ate garment holding members are provided for coacting with the lower buck to hold the garment in place thereon while the press head is coming into pressing position.

The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevation, parts being omitted of a pressing mach lne embodying my invention, the buck being 30 shown in transverse section on the plane of line 4- 1, Figure 2, and the contiguous portion of the support for the neck band holder being shown in elevation.

This pressing machine comprises pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, as, a buck and a head mounted to move toward and from the buck and an intermediate garment holding member mounted to coact with the buck to hold the garment thereon, the intermediate member being'movable relatively to the buck and the head.

The pressing machine here illustrated is of a conventional type comprising a suitable frame 1, a buck 2 mounted on the frame, a press head 3 mounted to move toward and from the buck, it being here shown as mounted upon a support as a yoke or lever 4, (pivoted at 5 between its ends to a stand ar 6 rising from the frame. The lever 4 may be actuated by any suitable mechanism and as this mechanism forms no part ofthis invention and as various forms thereof are well known, further description is thought to be unnecessary.

In the machine hereillustrated, a plurality of garment holding members are provided, these being a 9 designates the neck band holder, and 10 the shirt front holder. The neck band holder 9 may be of any suitable form, size and construction and as its construction forms no part of this invention, further be unnecessary.

The neck band holder is usually formed with a stem 11 which enters'a complementary socket 12. in the buck 2. In the ordinary pressing machines having a neck band holder, the stem is permanently secured in the socket. In this machine, the stem of the neck band holder moves into and out of the socket as the neck band holder is brought into and out of juxtaposition to the buck 2.

The shirt front holder is here shown as a band arranged to press flatwise on the shirt front arranged on the buck, the neck band holder being arranged at one end of the buck and the shirt front holding member at the other end of the buck. -The supports for these garment holding-members are alike in general construction. that for the neck band holder being here shown as an arm or bracket 13 extending across one endof the buck 2 and having a hub 14 mounted upon one end of the pivot shaft 5, and that for the shirt front holder 10 being a similar arm 15 having a hub 16 mounted on the other end of the pivot shaft 15 having laterally extending brackets 17 arranged in the front of and in the rear of the buck to, hold the strip 10. e support or .arm 15 has a spring pressed latchfor detachably connecting it to the head 3 to move with the head.

s seen in Figure 4, the arm 15 is pro-'v vided with a spring pressed latch 18 pivoted at 19 to the arm 15 and coacting with a lug or flange 20 at one end of the head 3, the latch having a handle 21 by means of which it can be tripped against the action of thespring 22. The neck band holder is moved into juxtaposition with the buck by the operator ,as by a pedal lever 23 conneck band holder and I shirt front holder toward the lower buck when the latch 18 is released. The lever 23 is held in its depressed or operated position by a latch 27 pivoted to the lever 23 and coacting with a fixed tooth on av stand ard 28. the latch being releasable by a trip lever 29 connected by a link 30 to the latter.

These intermediate garment holding members can he applied to pressing machines and do not prevent the machine from being used as an ordinary pressing machine for general pressing purposes.

Normally, the supports 13 and 15 are up. When however, the shirts are to be ironed, the operator while the head 3 is up pulls down the collar band holder 9 by depressing the pedal 23 to the buck with its stem 11 in the socket 12. The operator then arranges the garment with the neck band on the neck band holder and smooths out the shirt front. The operator then releases the latch 18 permitting the shirt front holder 10 to come down under the influence of the spring 26 to hold the shirt front in the position to which it has been arranged by the operator. The press head is then operated in any well known manner and when it come into pressing position the flange 20 gets into engagement with the latch 18. When the pressing is completed and the press opened, the shirt front holder 10 moves upwardly with the press head. The operator holds the neck band holder down by means of the pedal until the shirt is detached therefrom and when he releases the pedal, the neck band holder is moved upwardly by its spring.

What I claim is: I

1. In a pressing machine,the combination of a buck, a head mounted to move toward and from the buck, an intermediate member mounted to coact with the buck to hold a garment thereon, the intermediate member being movable relatively to the buck and the head and means for detachably coupling said intermediate member to the head.

2. In a pressing machine, the combination of a buck, a head mounted to move toward and from the buck, an intermediate member mounted to coact with the buck to 7 hold a garment thereon, the intermediate member being movable relatively to the buck .and the head and means for detachably coupling said intermediate member to the head and means tending to move said member toward the lower buck.

3. In a pressing machine, the combination of a frame, a buck carried by the frame and a head movably supported by the frame and buck,

means for movably supporting the neck band holder.

4. In a pressing machine, the combination of a frame, a buck carried by the frame and a head movably supported by the frame and movable toward and from the buck, a neck band holder movable between the buck and the head and means for movably' supporting the neck band holder, the buck and the neck band holder having a complementary socket and stem whereby the stem moves into the socket to center and position the neck band holder in juxtaposition to i the lower buck.

. 5. In a pressing machine, the combination of a frame, a buck carried by the frame and a head movably supported by the frame and movable toward and'from the buck, the head being coextensive with the buck, a neck band holder movable between the buck and the head into and out of juxtaposition to the buck and the head and means for movably supporting the neck band holder and means tending to lift the neck band holder out of operative relation with the lower buck.

6. In a pressing machine, the combination of a frame, a buck carried by the frame, a press head-movable toward and from the buck, a support for the press head pivoted to the frame, an intermediate member mounted tocoact with the buck to hold the garment thereon, the intermediate member being movable relatively to the buck and the head and having a support mounted substantially press head and means for detachably securing the support for the intermediate member to the head.

8. In a pressing machine, the combination of a book, a head mounted to move toward and from the buck, a plurality of intermediate garment holding members mounted to coact with the buck to hold the garment thereon, a support for each member pivoted to the frame of. the machine, each intermediate member and its support being of a buck,

movable relatively to the buck and the head independently to each other.

In a pressing machine, the combination a head mounted to move toward and from the, buck, an intermediate garment holding member mounted to coact with the buck to hold the garment thereon, the intermediate member extending transversely of the buck being movable relatively to the buck and the head, a support for the inter mediate member, said support being located beyond the end of the buck and connected to the intermediate member at its opposite ends in front and in the rear of the buck.

10. In a pressing machine, the combination of a buck, a head mounted to move toward and from the buck, a plurality of intermediate garment holding members mounted to eoaet with the buck to hold the garment thereon, the intermediate members eing movable relatively to the buck and the head, supports for the intermediate members, said supports being located beyond the opposite ends of the buck.

12. In a pressing machine, the combination of a buck, a head mounted to move toward and from the buck, an intermediate member mounted to coact with the buck to hold the garment thereon, means tendingto move the intermediate member toward the buck, latch means for detachably coupling the intermediate member to the head whereby the head automatically latches into engagement with said member when the head is down and means for releasing the latch when the head is up to permit theintermediate member to move downwardly into engagement with the work on the buck, the last mentioned means including a pedal. 13. In a pressing machine, the combina tion of a buck, a head mounted to move toward and from the buck, a neck band holder mounted to coact with the buck, a movable support for the neck band holder, means for moving the support for the neck band holder upwardly away from the buck and operator-operated means for moving the neck band holder into engagement with the buck and looking it on the buck.
