widingnn arrangement that williielilect such" I the ackets that -,dead pockets in which condensation. collects are E avoided. The present improvement circulation of steam through seeks to provide a construction whichwill rr ng me e -i s am 1 circulation through :PlfOVlClG for; a, positive all portions ot-the jacketing chambers and '5 15 V gthus ,insure the more eliicient operation-of the engine and t which twill also permit the easy; removal of the cylinder head for 1n-1 spection purposes. Tllheinventmn consists in i the features oi improvement hereinafter set forth, illustrated ionthe preferred form in, the accompany ng; drawings and more pan g ticularly pointed out'in the-1 appended claims. l isra view partially inielevatlon and a partially in longitudinalseGtiOn, oil the cylinder of at double acting terminal exhaust engine; providedr with v the present improved ends andithecylinder heads.
t nsv and partly. on the Figzfl is a vertical partly on the line ,;aa ;-line b-l' v ofFigaL v o i j j v ,-The terminal exhaust en gine illustrated has the usual\elon- ;at ed piston {1 reciprocatv head form acircular series oiports 18 that ingwithin the c .linder-QI which is provided with a central exhaust port 3 ports 4 at its ends. The central exhaust port; is openedmndfrlosed by the piston at v the ends of its stroke and the inlet ports 4;
are controlled by suitable valves, preferably in the form of poppet or lift valves 5 The end portions of the cylinder are enlarged and cored out to form annular steam jackets 6 that surround the inlet ends of the cylinder bore. At one point, and preferably adjacent its lower side portion, each jacket is provided with a flanged steam inlet 7 and a connection 8 is secured to the inlets of both jackets and to the steam supply pipe. A portion of each jacket alsocommunicates with the inlet valve and in the preferred arrangement shown theoupper portion of each jacket is provided with a flange 9 surround v ing an opening therein and to which the cap plate 10 pi? a bracket 11 is secured close the opening; brackets 11 :1 suitable type.
acketing the Y inlet I erse section taken and with. inlet guides for the inlet valves and portions of the mechanism by which the-valves, are op" erated and whichflmay be of any, usual or ,Each steam. jacket is divided into t o segmental chambers by partition walls 12 which are located at approximately diametrically opposite points. and at approxiv mately equal distances from the steam- :inlet 7 Each: steam jacket is thus divided into twosegmental or substantially semi-circular chambersc and d one of which communi' .cates witlrthe steam supply and the other i:with the inlet valve.
As usual the bore ofthe cylinder is slightly enlarged at. its ends' and hollow heads 13 fitting; vtherein are provided with: flanges 14 which overlap and are secured by a circular series of bolts 15. to the-end faces of the cylinder. The abutting faces of the cylinder and nfianges are quite vwide and are ground'as usual, ,to form tight joints.
The outer wall of the hollow cylinder head is preferably offset inwardly fromthe flange zll'lClfOlf greater'strength is connected to the inner wall by an integral, central stud 16. The flange 1a of thehead is of considerable thickness A andv is cored out at.- spaced. inter vals between the portions of the flange containing the bolt holes to form recessesor passages, ii? that conninnflicate with the periplr eralportion oi' the steam chamber 6 inthe, cylinder head. Holes drilled through the abutting joint iaces of the cylinderand its communicate with; the passages 17 andthus connect the chamber a of the cylinder head with, both of the chambers g and cl of the adjacent steam jacket. In efEect these ports are divided into two segmental series, one
series communicating with the steam jacket chamber 0 and the other with the steam jacket chamber 03.
With this arrangement the steam entering the inlet 7 of the steam jacket circulates through its chamber 0, passes thence through one segmental series of the ports 18 into the chamber 6 of the cylinder head, then through the chamber and the other segmental series of ports 18 into the steam jacket chamber at and thus to the inlet valve. It is particularly noted that the two semi-circular series of inlet and outlet ports of the hollow cylin der head are symmetrically arranged and are uniformly distributed throughout and close 11; adjacent the periphery of the cylinder ports located closely adjacent the head. It is further'not-ed that except for the central connection between theinner and outer walls of the cylinder head. that the chamber is unobstructed. Because of this arrangement the steam is uniformly dis tributed and positively circulated through out all portions of the steam jacket and the hollow cylinder head, and the collection of condensation in dead spaces or pockets is avoided.
Obviously, changes may be made in the details set forth without departure from the essentials of the invention as defined in the claims.
Iclaim as my invention:
1. In a terminal exhauststeain engine, a
cylinder having a steam jacket confined to andlencircling its inlet end, said jacket be-' ing divided, into two segmental chambers,
one having a steam supply, an inlet valve,
arranged in the other of said chambers, and a hollow head fort-he cylinder having a circular series of ports arranged closely adja-' cent the periphery of its chamber and communicating with the chambers of the cylinder jacket, the ports communicating with one of saidjacket chambers being symmet' rically and diametrically disposed with reference to the ports communicating with the.
other of saidchambers, and a hollow cylin der head the chamber of which is connected with both. of the chambers ofsaid jacket by a uniformly distributed circular series of p h y of the chamber of the head, substantially as described.
3. In a terminal exhaust engine, a cylinder having a steam jacketlconfined to and encircling its-inlet end, said chamber being divided by partitions into two segmental chambers, one having a steam inlet, an inlet valve communicating with the other chamber, and a hollow cylinder head having its inner and'outer walls connected at the center and periphery of the head but otherwise having, an unobstructed chamber, and sa d head hav ng two,symmetr1cally arranged, semicircular series of ports located closely adjacentithe peripheryof its chamber and communicating respectively with the separate chambers of the cylinder jacket,
substantially as described.
4. In a terminal exhaust engine, a cylinder having a steamjja'cket confinedto and' I encircling its ,inlet end, said steam jacket being dividedinto two chambers, one having a steam inletfan inlet valve incommunicat-ion with the other of said chambers, and a hollow head fitting within the cylinder rand having a flange overlapping the c'yl- Kinder wall and connected thereto'by'a cir cular series of bolts extending through said cular series of recesses arranged between the .bolts extending therethrough and a circular series of ports "connecting said passages with the chambers of the cylinder j acket, substantially as described," V
5. In a steam engine, a cylinder provided at its endwith an inlet valvejand an annular steam jacket divided intoitwo segmental chambers, one having a' steam inlet and the other communicating Withsaid inlet valve, and ahollow cylinder headhaving a flange overlapping and'connected by a circular se ries of bolts to theendof the cylinder, the" chamber of said head having a series ofextensions at 1tsper1phery arranged between the bolts and communicating through a circularseries of ports with the chambers of said jacket. ,i J
