DRAIN BOARD.
Application filed March 3,
My invention relates to drain-boards which are adapted to be employed in, connection with sinks and on which dishes, kitchen uten and the like are adapted to be placedattcr hav' been washed. The water which drains from the said dishes is caught by the drain-board and runs therefrom into a kitchen sink or. the like.
Drain-boards have heretofore, as far as I am aware, been constructed by casting the same to the particular dimensions and shapes desired. They have been unnecessarily heavy and the cost of the metal on tering into their construction has been unnecessarily large.
The general object of the present invention is to provide a drain-board'of relatively thin sheet metal pressed by suitable dies or by other means into the shapes desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drain-board of the character indicated in combination with means whereby it may be satisfactorily supported in relationto an edge or end portion of the usualkitchen sink.
To these and other ends my invention comprehends the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully described n the specification, particularly pointed out in the claims and as disclosed in the drawings in which 1 have illustrated convenient itorms of mechanical embodiment thereof. However, it will be understood that changes in the details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the invention.
In the drawings: I
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a drain board structure embodying the invention, a por ion oi the edge thereof being broken away to show more clearly a detail of the structure, and a portion of a sink upon which one end portion of the board rests being shown in section;
Fig. Q is a vertical sectional View taken on the line 22 of '1; I
Fig. 3 is a. transverse vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of F 1; and
Fig. 4% is a view in perspective of a bar by means of which the bracket shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is secured to the drain board.
Referring to the drawings: 1 designates a kitchen sink of any known construction, and 2 designates a drain-board formed of pressed sheet metal. In the pressing of the same flanged portions 3 are formed whlch I and taper proper 'horizontal flanges 4L5 shown in 1924. Serial No. 696,719.
project downwardly from the opposite sides and the outer end portion thereof. The opposite side edges of the board are curved inwardly as indicated at 4: andterminate in an'inwardly and downwardly extending tongue-like portion 5. The under sideot the board adjacent the margin thereoi ispressed upwardly so as to torma marginal upwardly extending ridge '6 which operates to prevent the water which may drain. from dishes which havebeen washed and placed upon the board from running over the sides and outer end thereof and dripping onto the floors These marginal ridges 6 terminate at the inner endfot the board upon opposite sides oi the inwardly and downwardly extending tongue-dike portion 5.
It will be apparent that what ,I have termed the inner tongue-like end portion of the board is supported upon the upper edge of one end of the sink 1. I
The lower edges of the downwardly extending flanges 3 at the opposite sides and outer end of the drain-board are provided with horizontally and inwardly extending flanges 45. A bar d6 is secured at its opposit-e endsto theupper sides of the horizontal flanges which extend inwardly from the flanges 3 at the opposite sides of the drainboard. The bar 46 is secured to the Said by means of screw threaded bolts 17 having nuts 48 upon the screw threaded ends thereof, as shown. The upper side of the bracket 50, which is of usual construction, is secured tothe under side of the bar 46 by means of bolts 51 'and nuts 52secured to the screw threaded ends of said bolts. The other side or leg of the said bracket is secured to the adjacent vertical side of a wall by means of screws 53.
It is desirable that the bracket shall occupy a position in a vertical plane as Fig. 1 of the drawings.
As usual the drain-board is inclined toward the sink 1. Such inclination is apparout from Fig. 1 of the drawing. Inorder, t-here'tore, that the bracket which is secured to the under side of the bar 16 shall occupy a vertical position as shown it is necessary that the portion of the under side of the said bar with which the side of the bracket contacts shall be slightly inclined, as is clearly shown at 54 in Fig. 4. The inclination is somewhat exaggerated but it should be sutlioient to compensate for the inclination of the drain-board toward the sink 1. The under Ill) 58. The upper end of the flanges project, a
side of the opposite end portions of the bar 46 adjacent its opposite ends is cut away as indicated at so as to form flat portions parallel with the opposite side of the bar 46 which rest upon the upper side of the inwardly extending side flanges oi the drainboard.
For the purpose of preventing tilting of the drain-board, in be placed upon the outer end portion thereof to the right of the bracket 50, as shown in Fig. 1, l have provided a holding member comprising a shank portion 57 which is secured to the wall adjacent to which the drain-board is located by means of screws said holding member is provided with a hook-like portion 59 which engages the inwardly extending flange 45 situated adjacent the said wall. lit is apparent that by reason of the engage ment of the hook portion 59 of the holding member with the flange 1-5 which projects forwardly from the wall the drainboard is held firmly in fixed relation to the sink 1 and cannoteither be tilted by a force'exerted downwardly upon the outer end portion thereof or by a force exerted upwardly upon the inner portion thereof; also the presence of the holding member comprising the hook portion 59 prevents the drain-board from being pulled outwardly away from the wall adjacent to which it is situated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut is:
l. lin a drain-board structure, in combination, a drain-board having flanges at its opposite side edges from the lower edges of which inwardly extending cross bar secured to the inwardly extending flanges at points approximately midway ol'' the opposite ends thercot', a bracket secured to said cross bar and to a support, and means for preventing tilting movement of the said drain-board with respect to the said bracket.
2. In a drain-board structure, in combination, a drain-board having depending and inwardly extending flanges at its opposite side edges, a cross bar secured to the'inwardly extending portions of said flanges, a bracket having one leg secured to the said cross bar, and means .lor securing its other leg to the adjacent portion of a vertical supcase a weight should dependin port, the said bracket and bar having connection with the said drain-board at points intermediate its outer and inner ends, a holding means having connection with the said support and being in engagement with the inwardly extending flange adjacent said support at a point between the said bracket and the inner end of the said drain-board.
3. In a drain-board structure, in combination, a drain-board having downwardly extending flanges atits opposite side edges, from the lower edges of which project in wardly extending flanges, a cross bar supported upon the inwardly and horizontally extending flanges, the intermediate portion of said cross bar being tapered transversely of its length toward a sink into which water is adapted to drain from the said drainboard,a bracket the upper side of which is secured to the under side of said bar and the vertical. side of which is secured to an adjacent vertical wall, and a holding means connected with said wall and being in engagemei'it with one of the said inwardly and horizontally extending flanges, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. In a drain-board structure, the combination of a drain-board having downwardly extending flanges at its opposite side edges, a supporting bracket having a horizontal portion which extends underneath and transversely of the length of the said drainboard, a bar mounted upon the said horizontally extending portion, the drain-board resting upon said bar, and the opposite ends of said bar having connection with the said side flanges. v I
5. In a drain-board structure, the combination of a drain-board having downward ly extending flanges at its opposite side edges, the lower edges of which flanges are provided with inwardly extending flanges, a supporting bracket having a horizontal arm which is located underneath and extends WILLIAM GRIFFITHS.
