Description

P. SIVERTSEN ABRADING DEVICE Filed Nov. 24, 1925 INVENTOR PE TEE S/ V'ERTSEN 4% m h 5 7% v Patented July 17, 1928.
PETER SIVERTSEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ABRADING DEVICE.
Application filed November 24, 1925. Serial No. 71,062.
This invention relates to sharpening devices and has more special reference to knife Sharpeners adapted for use on slicing machines.
While the present invention is more especially adapted for use with the slicing machine disclosed in my copending application S. N. 319,059, filed August 22nd, 1919 in which a horizontal bar is located near the rotary knife nevertheless the present invention may also be applied to other types of machines in which a supporting bar is found available and also to appliances other than slicing machines.
Comprehensively stated the present invention comprises an abrading element which is so mounted as to be capable of a universal compensatory movement so that the knife may be ground at any bevel.
While one embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawing, it is to be understood that this embodiment merely serves as an illustration of the underlying principles of the invention so that they may be readily comprehended by those skilled in the art and are not intended as limiting the invention to the specific form disclosed therein. 1
In said drawing v Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. 1' on the line 22.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the and Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 1 on the line 4-4. 7
Continuing now by way of a more detailed description, a driven rotary knife which is to be sharpened is indicated by A and a suitable rest or Supporting bar is indicated by B.v While the bar B is shown as an appurtenant to a slicing machine it is to be understood that the bar B might also be any bar which is temporarily placed in position to afforda support for the device.
invention Irrespective of whether the bar is a permanent appurtenant to a slicing machine or other apparatus or is merely a temporary expedient, as above indicated, a rockable yoke C having oppositely disposed dependent forked.
flanges C is adapted to be set on the bar B with the forked ends C straddling it. This yoke has an aperture or bearing at D for wheel mounted at one end of the bar E in a manner to be more fully described hereinafter. from the knife affords means for accommodating the grinder to the knifes wear while the change in inclinati on'of the plane of the abrading element affords means to control the bevel and also to present fresh surfaces of the abrading element to the knife edge. A set screw G of any convenient type is arranged to lock the bar E in predetermined position for grinding th-eknife and the pressure of the wheel F against theknife is accomplished by hearing down on the handle in the direction of arrow X and tilting the yoke C about the bar B as a fulcrum. The
The adjustment toward or away dependent flanges O hook over the bar and afford a firm support for the yoke and yet perm t the device to be quickly and easily applied and removed from the bar.
The abrading element F consistsof an abrading disk of'a suitable abrading material for example emery which is carried on a rotatable spindle F which in turn is jour nalled in a detachable socket H, the socket having its upper end flanged at H to prevent it from passing through its receiving aperture in the end of the arm E when pres-. sure is applied to the arm E in the direction indicated. The lower portion of the journal hearing has a suitable thrust member H to afford a bearing on which the spindle may turn.
It is claimed:
1. An abrading device for slicing machines combining a manually operable bar, a rotatable abrading element mounted on said bar, a stationary bar, a. support having oppositely disposed dependent flanges adapted to the lower end of straddle the stationary bar, and an opening in thesup ort adapted to receive the manually 0 eraEle ban [2. in abrading device for slicing ma- 5 chines combining, a, stationary bar, a yoke having oppositely disposed dependent flanges each of which is forked and adapted Y to straddle the bar, an arm slidably and r0- tatably mounted in said support, a detachable flanged socket in said arm, a rotatable abrading disk, a spindle carrying said disk and journalled in the socket.
Signed at the city of New York in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 6th day of May, 1924.
