Referring in detail to the different parts, 2 designates the vise bed which is provided at its rear portion with a fixed jaw 4 and a movable j aw 6. 10 designates a scale secured to the upper right hand portion `of the vise bed 2 and calibrated in the usual manner. 12 designates a bracket secured to the left end of' the vise bed 2. 52 designates an abutment rod which is slidably mounted in a guide 46 secured to the rear side ot' the vise bed. Said abutment 52 has peripheral grooves 54 .tor engagement by a bolt 44, whereby said abutment 52 point of its adjustment. All of the foregoing parts may be of ordinary or any preferred construction.
Referring more particularly to the parts constituting my attachment, 14 designates a frame Which is firmly secured to the left end of' the vise bed 2 and disposed on top of the bracket 12.

The''ree-end of the lever 36 is normally pressed down. by a spring 48 secured to the topfof the visebed 2 andextends across the indexbar 16V to coact with. the pinionv26 in. holding said index bar in the slot 18.k
The lower end of the bolt 44. has a. longitudinal slot 50, through Which the abutment 52 extends. The slot 50 has teeth 56 for entering the grooves 54 and thereby positively securing the abutment 52 at any point of its adjustment. The abutment 52 is firmly secured at its left en'd to the corresponding end of the index bar 16 Athrough the intermediary of an arm 57, While the right end of said abutment 52 is adapted to contact 4the movable vice avv 6 and adjust it towards the fixed vis'ejaw 4.
Brieiiy stated the operation is as follows: When the index bar 16 is to be adjusted longitudinally in veither direction to bring the index mark 2O into registry with the desired graduation upon the scale 10, the knob 30 is' drawn backivardly to cause the lever 36 to Sfr raise the bolt 44 out of engagement With the abutment 52 to release the latter. Vhile still pulling backwardly upon the knob 30 the same is rotated to the right or left to cause the pinion 26 to shift the index bar 16 to the desired point. As'the index bar 16 is shifted as stated, it, through the intermediary of the arm 57, shifts the abutment 52 the desired distance from the fixed jaw 4, :it which point it is locked by releasing the knob 30 so that the spring 48 Will depress the bolt 44 into positive engagement with the grooved portion ot said abutment 52, which latter thereupon constitutes a stop for limiting the movement of' the visey ja-W 6 y away from the vise javv 4 and thereby controlling` position.
By constrimting and arranging my attachment in. the manner above pointed out it may be installed upon the vise bed 2 Without the length of the lines of the conimaking changes in the latter, and hence my attachment Acan be readily substituted for the vone now 1n general use.
- While I have Vshown and described the pre-v ferred construction of my device, I reserve the right to all such changes and modifications as properly fall Within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having` thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: .1; In combination With a vise of the character described provided lwith .a scale and an abutment for limiting the movement of the movable vise from the fixed vise jaw, an,v index barmovably mounted upon said vise to the abutment for adjusting the latter into proper relation with the fixed vise jaw, said bar having rack teeth thereon, and a pinion intermeshing With said rack teeth for adjusting the bar.
3. In combination With a vise of the character described provided with an abutment for limiting the movement of the movable vise jaw from the fixed vise jaw, a bar movable longitudinally upon the vise for adjusting said abutment into proper relation With the fixed vise jaw, means for locking the abutment at any point to Which it is adjusted by said bar, rack and pinion means for adjusting said bar, a lever for disengaging the locking means from said abutment, and manually controlled means capable of rotation for actuating said rack and pinion means'and capable of longitudinal movement for lactuating said lever.
4. In combination with a vise of the character described provided With a scale and an abutment for limiting the movement of the movable vise jaw from the fixed vise jaw, a frame lixedly mounted upon the vise, an in- 'dex bar slidably mounted upon the vise and in said frame for coacting with the scalein adjusting said abutment into proper relation with the fixed vise jaw, apinion for sliding said index bar, a shaft rotatably and slidablymounted in :the frame and upon which said pinion is iixe'dly mounted, means for locking the abutment'at any'point to which it `is adjusted by said index bar, and a lever mounted in the frame and actuated by said shafty for disengaging said locking' means from the abutment.
