Description

L. E. COHOON TOILET CONSTRUCTION Filed Feb. 12, 1926 Patented July 3, 1928.
UNITEl) STATES LUTHER E. COHOON, OF LA GRANGE, ILLINOIS.
TOILET oonsraoc'rion;
Application filed February 12, 1926. Serial No. 87,741..
I provide 'abowl of the kind, with a combined flushing and .ventilating rim, whereby odors are drawn into the rim to be delivered to a vent or stack leading to atmosphere, whereby the bowl is maintained ina sanitary condltion, even though the usual seat and cover are in their closed position. These objects of the invention, as well "as others together with the many advantages thereof, will more fully appear as I proceed with my specification.
In the drawings: i I Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a tilet bowl embodying my invention, together with an associated flush tank. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section on an enlarged scale through one portion of the bowl rim astaken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is another detail vertical section on an enlarged scale as taken on the line 33 of Fi l.
Re erring now in detail to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, 1 indicates a toilet bowl and 2 indicates a low down flush tank associated therewith, which as shown herein is so ported upon one surface of a hollow buil mg wall 3 asb'y means of brackets 4;. The bowl may beof any of the modern types and includes a bowl body 5, a base flange 6 by which it is secured to the floor 6 and a top rim 7. As the connection between said bowl and the usual soil pipe forms no particular part of the resentinvention, it is neither shown or "escribed herein. The
how] is provided with the usual hin ed seat 8 and cover 9, each having theusual umper buttons 10 and 11 by which the seat is spaced a short distance above the bowl and the cover is spaced 8. short distance above the seat,
when said seat and cover are in a closed p6- sition.
-and outer walls 7 and 7 and. top and botas to bring those ends of said "openings comis bein The rim as shown herein is vof a combined flushing and ventilating type although the invention is also applicable to bowls of other flushing types, but the invention will be descrlbed as of the combined type above mentloned. The rim 7 is tubular in cross section and as shown is substantially rectangular and includes a channel 12 defined by inner 05 tom walls 7 and 7 respectively, the body wall 5 joining the bottom wall of the rim about midway between the inner and outer walls thereof as best shown in Fig. 2.
The bottom wall 7 d of the rim is so formed as to permit a discharge of flushing water from the interior or channel of the .rim to the'interior of the bowl. As shown herein, saidrbottom wall'includes a plurality of discharge openings 13 arranged near the body wall 5, but as is apparent an equivalent meanssuch as. a'slit not shown) may be used 1nplace thereo without departing from the spirit of the invention. In the inner wall 7 of the rim near its top margin is provided a plurality of ventilating openings 14 and preferably said openings are inclined upwardly from the interior of the bowl toward the interior or channel of the rim so so municating with the channel as high as possible above the water therein when the bowl flushed. I At t e rear of the bowl, the rim is rovided with an extension 15 in which is xed 9 one end of a combined vent and flushing conduit 16. The other end of said conduit is connected to the horizontal end of an elbow 17 located in the building wall 3, the vertical leg of said elbow receiving the bottom end of 9 a vent pipe 18 which opens to'atmosphere in any sultable manner. The flush tank 2 has a bottom discharge conduit 19 which opens through one side of the conduit 16 and at the bottom thereof as best shown in Fig. 3. 1. As shown in said figure, the flush tank conduit is of a diameter smaller than that of said conduit 16 so that even though water is passing through the conduit 19 into the conduit 16, the latter is at no time filled thereby 10:. nor is the channel 12,. so that the bowl is vented even during the flushing thereof. By reason of channel construction of the bowl openings 14 and from-said rear c annel through the conduit 16 and the elbow 17 -to the vent or stack 18. Thus a current of air is established which acts to withdrawall odorsfrom the bowl, up the vent to atmosphere so that the bowl is aerated and maintained in a sanitary and odorless condition. Even though the cover and seat be in their closed position, air may enter the bowl, through the spaces between bowl and seat and seat and cover, so that at all times a ventilatin and aerating action takes place within the owl.
As will be apparent, my improved construction while simple is. indeed efficient for its intended purpose, and while in describing the same I have referred in detail to the form and arrangement of the various parts thereof, the same is to be considered as by way of illustration only, so that I do not wish to be limited thereto except as may be pointed out in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
,1. A toilet bowl including a bowl body and a hollow rim, having a'single chamber therein, said rim having inner and outer side walls and top and bottom walls, there being'a'set of openings in said bottom wall adjacent the bowl body and a second set of openings in the inner wall ofcsaid ri nabove said first mentioned set of openings, both sets of openings communicating with the single chamber in said rim.
2. A toilet construction comprising a bowl, the rim of which is hollow to provide a single chamber therein of a depth sufficient to accommodate the flushing water and at the same time to provide an air space above the level of said water, there being suitable water discharge openings in the bottom wall portion of the rim for the discharge of wa ter and a; plurality of openings in the side wall portion of the rim above said water level, the said rim being adapted to be connected to a flushing water supply and to a vent pipe.
3. A toilet construction comprising a bowl, the rim of which ishollow to provide a single chamber therein of a depthsuflicient to accommodate the flushing water and at the same time to provide an air space above the level of the water, there being-suitable water discharge openings in the bottom wall port-ion of the rim for the discharge of water and a plurality of openings in the side wall portion of therrim above said Water level, said last mentioned set of openings being inclined downwardly toward the interior of the bowl, a fitting of substantially large diameter connecting said rim' to a vent and a second fitting connecting the first with a 00 source of flushing water supply.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, this 10th day of February, 1926. LUTHER E; COHOON.
