PATENT OFFICE.
sren.
Application filed December 5, 1927. semi No. 237,823.
The present invention relates to the construction of signs and. has forits object to provide a method of assembling and erecting a signboard composed of a metal framework adapted to receive a plastic coating thereabout and upon the base of which may be arranged the design characters for indicia.
A further object of the invention is to provide a signboard structure which is neat and attractive in appearance, strong and durable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and in which the cost is reduced to a minimum.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction and combination of the various elements comprising the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, where- 111: a
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a completed signboard constructed in accordance with my invention, i
Figure 2 is a top plan View thereof,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary front elevational view with parts broken away illustrating the various materials entering into the construction thereof,
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view therethrough, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view of one end of the sign showing the method of connecting the frame members.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the invention comprises a frame composed of a plurality of vertical members 5 preferably formed of angle iron and constituting posts having their lower ends 6 embedded a sufficient distance in the ground in order to properly support the sign in vertically extended position.
A plurality of horizontally disposed frame members 7 are arranged to be in pairs at opposite sides of the vertical member. each pair of horizontal members being spaced equidistantly throughout the height of said vertical member. The vertical and horizontal members aresecured in position with respect to each other by means of angularly formed bolts 8 having their headed ends extending through the casing member of the vertical frame member 5 with the opposite end of the bolt threaded and bent at right angles to the headed end so as to enable the same to extend through the horizontal frame members 7 as clearly illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings. a a
Against the outer edge of each of the horizontal frame members 7 is arranged a plurality of vertically disposed rods 9 secured in position With respect to said horizontal frame members by means of tie Wire or the like 10. A covering of metal layers or screeningll is then placed over therods9, at eachsideof the frame and retained in position thereupon in any suitable manner, the metal layers extending across the top of the frame as indicated in Figure 4 of the drawings.
A coating of cement 12 is then applied to the metal layers upon the sides and top thereof whereby to completely enclose the frame, except at the bottom portion, the sides of the metal layer and cement extending downwardlyto the ground so that the ground thereby serves to close thebase of the frame.
A border indicatedat 13 may be formed about the edges of the signboard at each side thereof,as shown in Figure 1, in any suitable manner and indicia 14 may. likewise be formed on one face of the sign in the form of raised characters. The border and indicia 14: may be formed by means of molds placed against'the face of the sign when the cement is filled in its plastic state or may be formed by outlining the border and indicia and cut ting away the surface of the sign a slight gepth about the edges of the border and in- The face of the sign may be covered with a coating of colored mortar or painted in any suitable color to form a background for the indicia formed thereon and the border and indicia may also be painted in a contrasting color in an artistic manner to enhance the appearance thereof.
The upper end of each of the vertical members 5 may be grooved transversely of the sign whereby to form a trough indicated at 15 extending longitudinally along the top of the sign. In this manner the upper edge of the sign is formed into a sharp outline. As a means of preserving the top of the sign, a coating of tar, indicated at 16 may be applied along the trough shaped portion thereof.
It will be apparent that a sign constructed in accordance with the foregoing description will be of a permanent and durable nature and at the same time will present a neat, attractive and distinctive appearance.
It is obvious that the invention is susceptible of various changes and modifica-- tions, without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the claim or sacrificing any of its advantages, and we accordingly claim all such forms of the device to which we are entitled.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new is:
In a signboard structure comprising a frame including a plurality of vertically disposed frame members having their lower ends adapted to penetrate the ground whereby to form a support for the frame, a plurality of horizontally disposed frame members arranged in pairs at the opposite sides of said vertical members and spaced equidistantly throughout the height thereof, an-
gular bolts extending through said vertical and horizontal frame member whereby to secure the same in position with respect to each other, a plurality of vertically disposed rods arranged against the outer edge of said horizontal members and having tie wire arranged to secure said rod in position, a covering of foraminous material disposed at each side of the frame outwardly of the rod and across the top thereof, and adapted to retain a coating of plastic material so as to enclose the frame except at its base portion, the top of the frame being formed with a trough extending longitudially thereof whereby to form a sharp outline for the upper edge thereof, said trough being provided with a preservative coating.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
