PACKAGE-SEALING MACHINE.
Application filed lanuary 16, 1928. Serial No. 247,110.
My invention relates to package sealing machines and particularly toa gravity actuated tab lifter and friction device and to a swinging gravity-actuated plate for carrying various patented elements-shown in the threading paper and .in case of the paper adhering to the bearing plate or other parts the sealing strips can be quickly started without having to thread paper through the guiding and cutting devices.
Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the'following description and the. invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application.

Similarcharacter's of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views. v
This machine contains a paper holding unit 1 which is provided with a hinged cover 2 and service unit 3. -A guide and stripping plate 4 is formed integral with the cover 2 and this plate carries the cutter 5, frame 6 and tab cutter 7. A handle or lever 9 iscarried by-the frame6. The frame 6 is hingedly connected to the plate 4 and springs 10 are-mounted on the'pivot or hinge bolt 11 to hold the cutter frame 6 in upright position against a rubber.buinper"12 on the cover 2. Each spring 10 is mounted on a reduced portion of the bolt 11 and one end of the spring is caught on the-front edge .of a;
member of the frame 6 and the other end of the spring 'is caught on a lug 13 formed on the plate 4 and projected through a hole in the lug 13. In operation, the frame 6 with all of its attachments is thrust downwardly manually by means of handle 9 for cutting the required length of paper and also for cutting a tab in the unsevered portion of the paper. As soon as the handle 9.
is released the frame 6 will be. thrown by springs 11 back to normal or inoperative position. The tab cutter 7 and the knife 5 are attached to the frame 6. Guards 14 are carried by the plate 4 for the tab cutter 7 and the tab 15. The plate 4 has a large slot 16 for the passage of the tab cutter 7 and tab 15. 'The plate 4 has a narrow slot 17 for the passage of the cutter 5. This plate 4 has holes 18 for guide lugs- 19 which are rigid with the bearing plate 20 which has the front edge curved slightly upwardly at the front to deflect the paper strip. upwardlv so that the paper strip-will vrise up over.
the moistening brush 23. The lugs 19'are both guiding lugs and screws for attaching the brackets which carry the tab lifter 24. The lugs 19 serve to center the plate 4 on the bearing plate 20 and also for guiding the paper strip 22. The lugs 19 can be changed to different positions for'adjusting the same for paper strips of diflerentwidths. The
bracket 25 is attached to the bearing plate' 20 by the screw lugs 19. The bracket-"25 has downwardly projecting bearing lugs 26 and the tab lifter 24 is pivotally mounted on these lugs 26. A pivot rod 27 projects through the tab lifter 24 and tilt lugs 26. the
cuttingoperation. After a cutting operation, the weight 29 throws the tab lifter upwardly and carries the tab to upright position. The tab 15 is cut from the unsevered portion of the paper and serves as the meansfor drawing the paper forward for another cutting operation. The edge 30 of the plate 4 co-operates with the tab lifter 24 in bending the tab 15 upwardly at a sharp angle. The tab lifter 24 has a shoulde'r31- which co-operates with the edge 30 with the'slots 17 of the plate 4 for the pas sage of the cutter '5. The bearing plate 20 ,is hingedly connected to-compartment 3.
The strips of paper are drawn across the slots 17 and 34 and the paper cutter 5 chops downwardly cutting the paper and passing through the slots 17 and 34. On the same stroke the tab cutter 7 cuts the tab '15. In this operation," fragments of the gummed paper will be torn from the strip of paper. It is necessary-to keep such fragments out of the moistening liquid in order to prevent disagreeable odors and unsanitary com ditions. For this purpose a trough or re- .oeptacle 35 is supported on ribs 36 in the compartment 3 and a lug 37 prevents backward movement of-the' trough. The fragments of paper can re uired. y v
0- start operations, the stripping plate 4 is gairaised by means of the cover=2 and the paper strip is brought forward and, placed on the bearing plate 20 between a-pair 015,: screw lugs 19 according to width of paper. Thereafter the paper is drawn means of the. tabs 15. V r
'7 The paper lifter 24 serves as a friction device for the paper strip which is drawn along on'the upper surfaceof the lifter 24. This prevents the paper from being drawn forwardly too freely arid also gives the necessary friction to give'the required tension in the paper strip'22 so that the paper will not be fed forward too freely. This friction will prevent accidental shifting of the paper forwardly or backwardly." Thev tab lifter 24 also serves to lock the tab 15 between the shoulder 31 and the edge 30 of plate 4. The tab lifter 24, being held by the weight 29, yieldable and when the be. removed-as often as" paper strip is being drawn forward. the upper surface of the tab lifter .bccoi'nes flush with the top of the bearing plate'20 and is held in this position by the weight 29. After the tab. is cut, the lifter 24 rises up- .strip of paper. forward by 4. In a packagesealingmachine provided wardly and fills 'the opening in the paper from which the tab was cut-,and holdingthe. tab up so that it can be grasped by the operators fingers. The tab 15 will not be forced down by the moist conditions of theatmosphere.
The forwardly projecting upstanding flanges 38 formbearings for-the pivot bolt 11 and add strength to the plate 4 at its juncture with the cover 2.
