Second, to construct a mop and its holder in such a manner so that when themop has been clamped to the holder said mop can be used in wiping or moppinga plane surface in a horizontal. or vertical position only the soft texture of the cleaner or mop is capable ofcoming in contact with the surface of the floor, window, or other surface or bOCly to be cleaned, mopped or polished,

thereby preventing the abrasion of the floor or scratching of the body surface due to the contact of metal forming the holder with said'floor or body surface.v

Third, to form a mop and holder which" can be use'djointly with a polishing'or cleaning fluid, said fluid being slowly, properly and uniformly distributed to the active surface of the mop.

Fourth, to provide a holder for the 1110p mop and holder shown in which can be applied to and operated from an extended pole or rod for use on the floor, or said rod or pole quickly disconnected from the holder and a handle to be gripped by the fingers readily substituted for said rod or'pole without in anyway disturbing the adjusted or clampedposition of the mop or cleaning surface. Referring'to Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4, 14 represents the receiving base or bottom section, which in this instance is square in plan View and is provided with a. plane bottom 15 having integrally formed at its outer edges a ill) . plane of the bottom and forming a recess 22 and is of a smaller depth than .the web or flange 16 of the base or bottom section 14 and of such shape and size to fit and be easily seated in the shallow recess or pocket 17 of the base section 1 1 with a slight clearance between the outer sides of the flange 21 of the clamping member 19 and the inner sides of the flange or web 16 of the base section, as clearly shown in Figure 2. Said bottom 20 of the clamping member 19 is provided with openings 23, 23, which register with the two screw threaded pins, 18,

The mop or cleaner consists of two rec tangular strips 2 1 and of cloth or suitable f'abric which are superimfprosed and arranged at right angles to each other sewed together by stitching 26, as shown in Figure 3, and the underside hasst tched or otherwise secured thereto a pile 27 or other absorbent fabric, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. This construction of the mop or cleaner provides two pairs of hinged and oppositely disposed flaps 28, 28,-capable of being turned in on each other ,over the top of center sec tion of the mop free of pile fabric, for purposes to be presently described.

A T-shaped member or socket piece 29 into which is fitted and secureda handle or pole 30 is provided with lateral extensions 31, 31, having openings which register with and are adapted to receive the projecting pins 18 18, as shown, and 33, 33, are nuts for securing said socket member 29 into the position shown in Figure 1.

The circular cooperating mop is made in the same manner as described with reference to Figures 1 to 4', except in order to conform to the circular shapes of thesbase section 141 and clamping member 191 said mop is preferably provided with hing-ed flaps 281having V-shape d sections removed in order to be properly disposed in the pocketofsaid base section and avoid overlapping the pins 181, as shown in Figure 7.

Fi'gure'8 shows a form of the invention in which the clamping member 192 is simply a plate without flanges and thelength of the pins 182 is reduced, as shown.

Figure 9 shows a mop and mop holder of the same general type and form as shown in Figures 5 and 7, except instead of long handle 30 being employed, a small curved or hand grip 301 is secured to the pins 181, by

the same nuts and makes the mop and its holder capable of being used for washing, polishing or rubbing at a high or low level without necessitating the taking apart of the holder.

From the foregoing disclosure of the construction and arrangement of the improvement and mode of applying the same, it will be seen that all the objects and advantages recited in the statement of invention have been fully and efficiently carried out, and while we have shown and described our preferred forms of mops and mop holders, many changes will readily suggest themselves without in any way departing from the salientfeatures herein disclosed and embodied in the scope of the claims.

What we claim is:

1. A mop comprising a base section provided about its periphery with a raised web forming a shallow recess or pocket, a plurality of separated pins normal to and rigidly projecting from the base section within the pocket or recess, a dished clamping member adapted to fit with a slight clearance within the recess or pocket and having openings registering with and adapted to receive said separated pins, and means engaging said pins for holding said dished clamping member within said recess or pocket of the base section with the recesses of said clamping member and base section facing each other, and a mop fabric comprising two elongated sections of fabric superimposed at right angles to each other and secured at their overlapping central sections and an absorbent material secured on the outerside of one. of the overlapping central sections, thereby forming a structure with a central absorbent section with hinged and flexible flaps extending from said absorbent section, said central absorbent section being disposed on the exterior of the base section and the flexible flaps passing over the top edge of the raised web into the shallow recess of the base section and held between the clamping member and base section.

2. A mop holder comprising a base section having a perforated bottom and provided about its periphery with a raised web forming a shallow recess or pocket, a plurality of separated pins normal to and rigidly projecting from the base section within the pocket or recess, a dished clamping member adapted to fit with a slight clearance within the recess or pocket and having openings registering with and adapted to receive said separated pins, means engaging said pins for holding said dished clamping member within said recess or pocket of the base section with the recesses of said clamping member and base section facing each other, and a mop fabric comprising two elongated sections of fabric superimposed at right angles to each other and secured at their overlapping central sections and an absorbent material secured on the outerside of one of the overlapping central sections, thereby forming a structure with a central absorbent section with hinged and flexible flaps extending from said absorbent section, said central absorbent section being disposed on the exterior of the base section and the flexible flaps passing over the top edge of the raised web into the shallow recess of the base section and held between the clamping member and base section.

3. A mop comprising two elongated sections of fabric having V-shaped incisions in their ends and superimposed at right angles to each other and secured at their overlapping central sections and an absorbent material secured on the outerside of one of the overlapping central sections, thereby forming a .structure with a central absorbent section with hinged and flexible flaps extending from said absorbent section.
