This invention relates to means for looking the cover of a receptacle to the body thereof and more particularly to such means as applied to receptacles of the character known to the art as cans.

An object of the present invention is to provide means whereby the cover of a receptaolemay be locked to the body thereof.

Accordingly the present invention consists in a receptacle preferably of that character known to the art as a can having a cover which may be locked thereto to prevent disengagement therefrom. In the preferred form of the invention the body of the device is provided with spaced slots and that portion of the top fitting around the body is provided with integral tapered tongues which may engage the slots. In a modified embodiment of the invention, the body of the devieeis provided with pairs of spaced slots, that portion of the "body between the slots of the respective pairs beingforced outwardly a slight amount. The portion of cover fitting around the body in this instance is provided with spaced openings corresponding to the position of the extended portions of the body and tapered pins or tongues are provided for locking the cover to the body by means on the extended portion.

Referring now to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive of the drawings, the device illustrated comprises a receptacle or can composed of a body 10 and a top or cover 11. A. peripheral head 14 spaced below the upper edge of the body 10 may be utilized to limit downward movement of the cover 11 and due to its shape, namely, a slight triangular shape, the cover upon being forced thereupon will efiect a tight seal. Spaced at intervals about the periphery of the upper portion of the body are a number of slots 15. That portion of the body adjacent to the slotsis bent inwardly a slight amount so that tongues y readily be inserted in the slot. A number of tongues 16 formed as integral parts of the skirt of the cover 11 adapted to fit around the body 10 are spaced at intervals corresponding to that between the respective slots These tongues 16 are forced inwardly a slight amount so as to readily enter the slots 15.

From the foregoing, it may be seen that the cover 11 may be pressed downwardly upon the body and then turned until the tongues I enter the slots 15. Due to the ta ered shape of these tongues, the turning o the cover with the resultant contact between the top edge of the tongue and the top edge of the slot will cause the cover to be forced downwardly until a good seal is made between the lower ed e thereof and the peripheral head 14:- In this position, the top may he removed only by turning the cover in the reverse direction and then lifting it from con tact with the side walls of the body.

It will be evident that the foregoing arrangement of slots and tongues may be reversed, i. e., the skirt of the cover may berovided with slots and tonglues may be ormed as integral parts of t e body. In this arrangement, atter the cover has been turned until the tongues are thoroughly seated and in place in the slots, the extremities of the tongues will be outside the skirt of the cover, and if so desired may be bent backward against the cidental disengagement of the body and cover. 1

A modification shown in Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive comprises a similar body portion 10' and cover 11 with a curled edge 12 and curved enlargement or'recess 13'. The body is likewise provided with a. peripheral head 14 similar to head 14. Spaced at intervals around the to of thebody 10' are pairs of slots 20 in c ose roximity to each other. The skirt portion of cover 11 which fits around the body is provided with a number of openings 22 spaced at intervals corres onding to that between the outwardly exten ing portions 21. ihe openings 22' are of suficient size to readily slip over the outwardly extending portions 2 and when so arranged pins 23 may be inserted as shown in Fig. 4. Due to the tapered shape of these pins or tongues 23, their action will be approximately the same as that of the tongues 16, namely, to force the cover downwardly until the lower edge thereof rests firmly against the flange 14.

- In acking and sealing a receptacle similar to eit er embodiment, 1f it is so desired a strip of packing material or gasket may be laced in the recess 13 so that when the cover is forced downwardly upon the curled edge 12a tight seal will be made.

From the foregoing, it will readily be seen that the present invention provides a new, simple and eflicient arrangement for lookin' the cover of a receptacle to the body thereog,

and it is tobe understood that the invention emma slots to draw the cover downwardly upon said body, upon relative rotary movement between the members.
