'This'invention relates to improvements in devices commonly known as assembly reels largely employed in laundries and similar establishments.
An object of this invention is toprovide an improved assembly reel in which there is an improved mechanism for rotating the reel from one position to another and locking the reel in its various positions.
With the foregoing and other objects in VlQW' which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is, had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:

Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the improvement is embodied upon an assembly reel of the conventional construction consisting oi end supporting members and 11 which serve as supports for trunnions 12 provided on end. members 13 and M of the reel. hese end members are connected by radial shells or partitions 15 which carry conventional pins 16 adapted to receive the key tags on .he articles of clothing which are placed on the reels. In the drawing a large sized reel is disclosed, which has a center or intermediate circular member 17 which rests on rollers 18 on a circular support 19, thus serving to support the center of the reel in the case of a long reel. It will be readily understood. however, that this construction is in no way essential to the improvement constituting the invention.
The invention resides in providing an im proved mechanism for rotating the reel, and to accomplish this, the end members 13 and 1% have gear teeth 20 formed upon their peripheral surfaces. These gear teeth on the end members 13 and 14; mesh with pin ions 21 and 22 which are keyed or otherwise fastened. to a longitudinal shaft 23 which is rotatably mounted in the end supports 10 and 11. On one end of the shaft 23 there is keyed or otherwise secured a worm wheel 21, and the worm wheel 2st meshes With the worm 25 provided on an actuating shaft so rotatably mounted in bearings 27 on the support 10. The actuating shaft is adapted to be rotated bya hand wheel 28 thereon.
The operation of the in'iproved device is as follows: When it is desired to rotate the wheel from one position to another, the hand wheel 28 is rotated','rotating the actuating shaft 26. The worm 25 drives the worm wheel 2 1 and causes the shaft 28 to be rotated. and as the pinions 21. and 22 mesh with the gear teeth on the peripheral surfaces of the end members 13 and 1 1, the reel will be rotated. I-liowever, when the reel ha been moved into the desired position on dis continuing rotation of the actuating shaft 26, the reel will be locked in that position because of the engagement of the worm wheel 2-i with the Worm 25. I
'By the improved construction it will be readily appreciated that the .reel will be rotated by applying a force at both ends there of thus eliminating any strains which are present in prior constructions wherein the reel is rotated by applying a force to one end member only.- The improved construc- 35 tion is a decided improvement over those prior constructions wherein there is a worm wheel mounted on one of the end members about its trunnion 12, which worm Wheel meshes with a worm on the actuating shaft.
Such constructions have been found disadvantageous in that there is usually a considerable amount of loose play permitting the; reel to be rocked or to wobble in any adjusted position. Such loose play is effectively eliminated by employing the gear teeth 20 and causing the end members to function as large gears driven by small pinions 21 and 22.
It will be understood that various changes in the detail of co-nst'uct-ion may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An assembly reel for use in laundries comprising end members, radial shelves .mounted between the end members, pins carried by the shelves, means providing gear teeth on one of the end members, a pinion H0 meshing with the gear teeth, a worm Wheel rigid with the pinion, an actuating shaft carrying a Worm ,iiieshiiig With the Worm Wheel, and a hand u heel mounted upon the actuating shaft for rotating it. 7
