STRAND-REELING AIEPARATUS.

This invention relates to strand reeling apparatus, and more particularly to strand distributing mechanisms therefor.
The principal object of the present inven- 5 tion is to provide a simple and inexpensive mechanism for efficiently distributing strand material being reeled.
In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, there is provided a multiple distributor wherein a horizontal shaft positioned between two rows of vertically mounted driven take-up spools is positively oscillated by a rotating horizontal face cam engaging a pair of rollers carried by an enlarged end of the shaft. Arms extending from the shaft distribute strands indivi'du ally to the take-up spools of the rows.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following detail description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is an elevational view, partly in section, of an apparatus embodying the features of the present invention;

Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawing, a plurality of vertically mounted take-up spools 1010 are supported upon rotatable carriers 11-11 which may be driven in any suitable manner from any suitable source of power (not shown). Positioned between the carriers 5 11-11 is a supporting frame 12 upon one end of which is mounted a substantially cylindrical housing 13 provided with a removable cover 14. The frame 12 is preferably of such construction that it may be readily attached to various types of strand winding and reeling apparatuses.
A horizontal shaft 15 is rotatably supported in bearings 16 secured to the supporting frame 12 and terminates at one end in an enlarged substantially semi-circular portion 18. The portion 18 of the shaft 15 is positioned within the housing 14 and is provided with slots 19 and 20 within which are rotatably carried a pair of frustro- conical rollers 21 and 22, respectively.
Rotatably journaled in a hub portion 23 of the housing 14 is a vertical shaft 24 having slidably keyed upon its upper end a horizontal face cam 25 which is positioned to engage the rollers 21 and 22. Mounted within a hub portion 26 of the cam 25 is a helical compression spring 27 which serves to nor mally urge the cam 25 upwardly in contact with the rollers 21 and 22. The spring 27 encircles the shaft 24 and is disposed between a collar 28 formed integral with the shaft and a wall 29 of a recess 30 formed in the hub portion 26 of the cam (Fig. 3). a
The cam 25 may be driven through the shaft 24 from any suitable source of power (not shown) and is constructed so as to positively oscillate or rock the shaft 15 through its engagement with the rollers 21 and 22. Arms 33 secured to the shaft 15 carry rotatable guide sheaves 34 which distribute the strand material upon the spools during the reciprocating movement of the shaft 15. Due to the construction, it is obvious that the material being applied to the spools positioned on one side of the shaft 15 will be distributed in a direction opposite to that in which the material is distributed upon spools positioned on the opposite side of the shaft 15.
From the above description it is apparent that a strand distributing mechanism embodying the features of this invention is very simple and efficient and may be readily and conveniently applied to various forms of stranding winding and reeling apparatuses. Furthermore. by reason of the improved construction which eliminates the necessity of employing resilient means for imparting motion to the distributing arm in either one direction or the other, it will be understood that the movement of the distributing arms will be positive and much more uniform regardless of the direction of travel.
What is claimed is: p
1. In a strand reeling apparatus, a take-up spool, a member for distributing material upon said take-up spool, a face cam for positively reciprocating said member alternately in opposite directions, and resilient means for holding the cam in operative engagement with the member.
2. In a strand reeling apparatus, a vertically mounted take-up spool, a horizontal shaft, a member carried by the shaft for distributing material upon the take-up spool, the shaft having an enlarged end portion, a pair of rollers carried by said end portion, and a face cam rotating on a vertical axis 10 spools, a pair of rollers carried by the shaft on opposite sides of the axis thereof, a face cam rotating on a vertical axis and engaging the rollers for positively oscillating the shaft alternately in opposite directions, and resilient means for maintaining an engagement of the cam with the rollers.
