' Application filed November 29, 192g The present invention relates to leai binders and an object thereof is to provide a binder which is designed to permanently secure loose leaves. A further object of the invention is to provide an improved leaf binder which is adjustable to hold ditl'erent numbers of leaves. A further object oi the invention is to provide a leaf binder in which one of the binding members carries an impaling device formed with a plurality of shoulders and.bendable so that when the two binding members are secured together, there will be no portion of the impaling de vice projecting from the binder.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, there are employed two binding.
members 1 and 2 having hinged thereto leaves 3 and a respectively through the means of hinges 5. The binding member 1 has, in this instance, one or more, preferably two, impaling projections extending therefrom and indicated at 6. These impaling projections, in this instance, being connected by a. portion 7 so that the connection portion and the impaling projections may be formed from a single piece of sheet metal. This metal is pliable so that it may be bent readily transversely of its fiat faces, but is rigid in the direction of the planes of its flat face or edgewise. Each of the impaling projections has a series of shoulders 8 formed on one edge thereof. The binding member 2 is formed with two openings 01- slots 9 through which the impaling projections 6 may be extended.
Arranged on the binding member 2 is a detaining means for cooperating with the shoulders 8 in order to hold the binding members in cooperative relation. In this Serial No. 151,283.
instance, this detaining means embodies a sheet metal plate 10 secured by rivets ll to the binding member 2. Secured in the pocket or recess 12 beneath this plate by solder l3'is a bowed spring having oppo-' sltely extending arms 14': which bridge the openings 9. The ends 15 of the impaling projections 6 are bevelled so as to facilitate their passageway through the openings 9 and cause them to displace the spring arms 14. The spring arms cooperate with impaling projections (3 and press the shouldered edge into engagement with the detaining plate 10, causing such plate to interlock with the shoulders. Bevelled portions are provided adjacent each shoulder 8 so that when the binding member 2 is slipped upon the impaling projection 6, the plate 10 will ride over the shoulders, but will cooperate with the sliioulders to prevent the accidental separation of the binding members. If it is desired to remove the binding member 2 from the impaling projections, a pull on the binding member 2 relatively to the binding member 1 will deflect the spring armslt so that the detaining plate 1.0 will be disengaged from theshoulders on the impaling projections o and it while pulling on the binding member 2 in the plane of the latter, a pull is made on the binding member 2 upwardly, the binding member 2 may be slipped oil the impaling projections. As this binder is designed more particularly as a permanent binder for receiving leaves from temporary binders, under ordinary conditions, it will be unnecessary to remove the binder member 2 after it has been secured by the ii'npaling posts.
After the binding member 2 has been forced lirmly against the sheets 16, the projecting ends of the impaling projections 6 are deflected laterally into abutment with the upper surface of the binding member 2. Thereafter, a flap 17 which is secured to the cover 1 and over the hinge 5 thereof is adhesively secured over the bent over portions of the impaling projections. Finally a back piece 18 which has previously been secured over the cover member 3, is adhesively secured over the cover piece 17 so that the binder assumes the condition illustrated in Figs. 3 and 5, making a permanent file of the loose leaves contained therein.
It will be noted that in this construction the two binding members are held against separation by teeth or shoulders provided on impaling projections arranged on one binding member and cooperating with detaining mean-s on the other binding member.
These im alin )ro'ections are of sul'licient length to accoi'nn'iodate any desired number of loose leaves or sheets and those portions, of the impaling projections which project beyond the bin-ding nember 2 downwardly on the outer face of the binding member and suitably covered so not to be exposed. The bending of the impaling projections takes place transversely of the sheet metal stock of which the impaling projections are formed and does not interfere with the interlocking connection between the impaling projections and the binding incinber 2. v
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A loose leaf binder comprising two binder members, a pliable impaling projection secured to one of said binding members and passing through the other binding member so that the projecting portion can be bent on the outer face of the said other member, and interlocking means between the last-mentioned binding member and the im paling projection so that no strain will be imposed upon the bent portion of the impaling projection, that portion of the interlocking means on the binding member being entirely on the inner side of the out r face of the binding member so that the impaling projection may be bent to lie close to said outer face.
2. A loose leaf binder comprising two binding members, a pliable impaling projection extending from one binding member and passing through the other, said impaling projection being formed with a plurality of shoulders thereon, and detainingv may be bent means carried by the second-mentioned binding member for cooperation with one of said shoulders, said detaining means being entirely on the inner side of the outer face of such binding member so that the impaling projection may be bent to lie close to such outer face. A loose leaf binder comprising two binding members, an impaling projection formed of flat pliable metallic stock provided with shoulders on one edge and adapted to be passed through the other binding members, and detaining means carried by said other binding member for cooperation with said shoulders, said detaining means being entirely on the inner side of the outer face of such binding member so that the impaling projection may be bent to lie close to such outer face.
4. A binder comprising two binding members, two impal'ing projections projecting from one binding meniiber and extending through the other, each impaling projection having a series of shoulders on one side, a plate rigid with the second mentionedbinding member and engaging'with the shoulders of both impaling projections, and a bowed spring having two ends each cooperating with one of the impaling projections on the side opposite the side provided with the shoulders.
5. A loose leaf binder comprising two binding members, an impaling projection on one binding member having shoulders on one side thereof and adapted to be passed through the other binding member, a-rigid detaining device on the other binding member for engagement with any one of said shoulders and spring means for cooperat- .ing with that side of the impaling projection opposite the side provided with shoulders.
