END-THRUST. BEARING FOR-' LOCOMOTIVE JOURNAL BOXES.
Application fiIe'dMay 2e,
Locomotive driving= boxes and journal boxes for locomotive trucks must be provided on their wheel ends with wearing plates to take end thrusts. These wearing plates are usually cast on, making it a difficult and expensive proceeding to renew them; and, since wear takes place rapidly, renewals are comparatively frequent.
The object of thepresent invention is to produce a simple and novel wearing plate construction for journal boxes on locomotives, in which compensation may quickly and easily be made for wear, and which permits replacements to be easily made when necessary.
The various features of novelty whereby our invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in the claims; but, for a full understanding of our invention, and of its objects and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a locomotive driving box equlpped in accordance with the present inventlon; Fig. 2is an end view of the box, showing the end thrust wearing plate; Fig. 3 is a side view of the box, and Fig. 4 is an elevation of a shim or liner by means of which compensation for wear is made.
Referring to the drawing, 1 representsa locomotive journal box of any usual or suitable construction, a driving box being illustrated. Projecting forwardly or outwardly from the lower marginal portion of the end face on the wheel end of the box are ledges 2, 2, one on each side of the gap in which the cellar 3 is located. At each side of the box, at the front or outer end, is a lateral projection orear 4 whose outer face lies in the plane of the end face of the box. A wearing plate 5, of suitable anti-friction material, is set against the end of the box, being cut away at the middle of the lower half, to provide an opening 6 to permit the plate to pass the axle and to receive the cellar 3. The wearing plate rests on the ledges 2, 2, and is secured to the projections or ears 4 by means of bolts 7. The heads 8 of these bolts are preferably countersunk, as shown. The usual driving boxes do not have elements corresponding to the ears or projections 4, but we add these to the box in order to bring the fastenings beyond the zone or area of wear 1927. Serial No. 194,517.
due to the end thrust of the wheel hub against the box. In the case of old boxes, the ears or projections may be welded thereto; but when new boxes are being manufactured,the ears or. projections are cast. on as a part thereof. Consequently the wearing plate maybe solidly, bolted against the end of the box, without dangerithatthe fastenings will be effected by reason of the wearing down of the plate. Since the plate rests on the ledges, the bolts are largely relieved of the shearing stresses which they would otherwise be compelled to bear.
The plate is preferably thickened on the outer or working face, to provide a central ring-like part 9 that projects beyond the re mainder of the plate and constitutes the wearing zone or area.
As soon as a predetermined amount of wear has taken place, compensation therefor may be made by inserting between the wearplate and the end of the box a shim or liner such as indicated at 10. As further wear occurs, additional thin liners may be added, or the comparatively thin liner may be replaced by a thicker one.
The liner preferably has the same configuration, as the wearing plate, being preferably provided, however, with an eye llat the top by means of which it may be lifted. Instead of having holes for the passage of the four bolts that fasten the wearing plate to the box, we provide the liner with long vertical slots 12, 12 extending up through the lower edge of'the same, and permitting the liner to pass the bolts without separating the latter from the box.
It will thus be seen that we have provided simple and novel means for taking care of the wear on locomotive driving or truck journal boxes due to end thrust, compensating for such wear, and permitting easy replacement of the wearing elements when replacements finally become necessary.
While we have illustrated and described with particularity only a single preferred form of my invention we do not desire to be limited to the exact structural details thus illustrated and described; but intend to cover all forms and arrangements which come within the definitions of my invention constituting the appended claims.
We claim:
- 1. A locomotive journal box having on the wheel end lateral ears beyond the end Wearing plate and said ears, and shin slotted through one edge to permitit to. pass said bolts, the bolts being long enough to permit the shim to be inserted between the wearing plate and the box. I j
2. A locomotive journal box having a transverse ledge projecting from the-lower portion of the face at the wheel end and having ahorizontal upper surface,-a wearing plate resting on said ledge and lying against said face, and boltsextending between said plate and the box outwardly from the end thrust wearingizone :of the plate andlying parallel with the longitudinal axis 2 of l the journal box, the bolts being long enough to permit the insertion of'alshim: between the wearing plate and the box:-
3. Alocomotixze joumaluboxh having a transverse *led'geprojecting from the: lower portion of the face at the wheel end and having a horizontal upper surface, a Wearing plate resting on said ledge and-lying against'said face; and bolts extending between said plate and. the box outwardly from the end thrust Wearing zone of the plateandwlying parallel with the longitudinal axis of the journal box, the bolts being long enough toepermit-the insert-ion oii a. shine between the wearing: plate and-thebox, and a shim slotted through oneweolge to; permit it .to. pass said bolts and rest on said. ledge;
In testimony whereof, We sign this speci float-ion;-
