UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

SINGER.
Application filed May 23,
Our present invention has reference to a hair singeing apparatus designed for use by tonsorial artists as Well as for home use and our primary object is the provision of an electric hair singer Which is of a simple construction, can be safely handled and operated in a convenient manner, which will emit no fume and which will perform its y functions kwith accuracy and with reliability.
To thev attainment of the above broadly stated objects the improvement resides in the construction, combination and operative association of parts, one satisfactory embodiment of which is disclosed by the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a sectional view on the line l-l of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a sectional AView approximately on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is an elevation looking toward the inner face of the head of the improvement.
'lhe head l of the improvement preferably comprises a somewhat elongated member of insulated material which is approximately semi-circular in cross section. The head l, on its rear and rounded face, is formed, adjacent to the center thereof, With spaced outstanding ears 2, the head having an opening between the ears. There is pivoted, as at 3, between the ears Q 4 of the improvement. Surrounding the pivot, seated in pockets in the side of the handle and exerting a pressure between the inner walls of these pockets, and the ears 2, there are helical springs 4. This prevents the free turning of the handle on the head.
The head, on its inner concaved face at the opposite sides of the opening 5 therethrough. has secured therein longitudinally7 extending conductor plates 6 which are preferably of copper.
The handle 4 has a central bore or opening therethrough, for the passage of insulated and encased conductors 7 which are designed to be plugged to a Wall socket. The conductors are secured to the respective plates 6.
Arranged in the hollovv head l, and having its outer Wall approximately in a line with the said head, there is a core of insulated material 8. found around this core The edges of approximately there is a resistance coil 9. the core 8 are rounded to conform to the inner Wall of the head l, and disposed to the handle member 1927. Serial No. 193,573.
contact with the inner straight face of the core and with the coils thereon there is a l() which is also of insulated material. 'lhe guard has its rear face rounded to conform to but disposed slightly out of contact With the rear inner wall of the head 1.
rlhe guard l() prevents the head l from becoming over-heated and from inflicting injury to the operator or the person operated 0H.
Passing through the ends of the core, the guard 1U, and entering threaded openings through the rear Wall of the head l there are screw members ll which effectively join these elements together.
The ends of the resistance coil 9 are passed through openings 1n the core 8 and merge into contacts l2 Which engage With the copper plates 6, and whereby the source of current through the conductors 7 is directed to the resistance coil.
Our improvement is of an extremely simple construction, may be handled With safety, will not produce a flame and may have its handle adjusted with respect to its head so that the heating coil can be brought to singe hair on the different parts of a persons head with the utmost convenience to the operator.
Having described the claim:`
In an electric hair singeing device, a head 0f insulating material Whose body is round in cross section and which has its rear and rounded face provided with a central opening and ears at the opposite sides of the opening, a handle of insulating material pivotally secured bet-Ween the ears, spring friction means between the pivoted endk of the handle and the ears. a core of insulating material arranged in the head adjacent to` the outer face thereof, a resistance coil for the core, a guard of insulating material in the head and contacting with the inner face of the core and coil, conductor plates secured in the head and extending longitudinally from the opposite side of the opening therethrough, said resistance coil having its ends directed through the core and guard and contacting with said plates and conductors guided through the handle and connected respectivelI to the plates.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
