This invention relates to improvements in non-rewind, take-up reels for motion picture projecting machines.
The object attained in the invention consists in a take-up reel of simple construction, adapted to be applied to a motion picture projecting machine of the usual construc tion, which Winds the film as it is run on the machine in right relation for repeated use without rewinding, that is to say, without rewinding from the take-up reel as required where ordinary take-up reels are used.
The novelty of the invention consists in the simple, inexpensive means employed for directing the film to the outer portion of the take-up reel and causing the same to be wound toward the center instead of from the center outwardly as in the common practice, and the adaptability of the improvement to the reel supporting and actuating mechanism of the usual construction.
In the accompanying drawings the improvement is shown in two preferred forms of construction, the one being a modification of the other and both serving to illustrate the principle of the invention.

As here shown the improved take-up reel is adapted to be supported in the usual reel housing 1, the take-up spool comprising the opposite side retaining discs 2 and 2, the latter being stationary, the band 3 and spindlc 4, these parts, except the band 3, in theirgeneral form being of common construction.
The film 5 is shown as the same is delivered from the projector to the take-up reel,
the same being directed, as shown in Fig. 2 alongside, past the center to the inner surface of band 3, a film diverting mechanism operable near the center of the spool acting to deflect the film from its descending plane of movement to the plane of the spool.
The film deflecting mechanism, which is a feature of the invention, consists of a helical or spiral-shaped member, best shown in detail Fig. 4, and in .a modified form in detail Fig. 6, consisting, as shown in Fig. 4, of a part 6 secured at one end in fixed relation in a side Wall, near the center, of housing 1, the opposite end being unsupported. The part is provided with a spiral flange 7, and a portion 8 extended circumferentially thereof parallel with the flange and having a series of evenly spaced transverse slots 9. therein, parallel spiral channels 10 being formed between the flange 7 and the slotted portion 8. Each slot 9 serves to support a shaft 11 having rollers 12 supported on the opposite ends thereof and operable in the channels 10, the shafts being held in the slots by any suitable means, as by a spiral band 13.
The course of the film over part 6 is between the flanges 7, over the rollers 12. The flanges being higher than the rollers act'to direct and retain the film in its spiral course,

The modified construction of the film defleeting device illustrated in Fig. 6 consists of part 15 supported rotatably on side wall 1 of the reel housing, and having a spiral flange 16 formed thereon for the film, the function and operation of the part being essentially the same as that shown and described in the form illustrated in Fig. 4.
As an aid in threading the end of the film over the deflecting device at the beginning of a picture, opposite spring- tensioned guides 17 and 18 each operable between the flanges 7 and acting to exert slight pressure on the film as it passes over rollers 12, are
provided, as best shown in Fig. 1, the mechanism consisting of part 17 pivoted on the reel spindle 4 and-having a finger piece 19 for drawing the part away from the spool 6-15 for more convenient threading of the film; the part 18 pivoted as at 20 on the side wall 1 and having 9. depending arm 21 by 7 means of which it is connected by a link 22 to a depending arm 23 of part 17, a tension spring 24 acting to return the parts-to normal relation When the same are drawn away from the spool by manipulation of the finger piece 19.
The film is wound under the band 3 by a roller supported on the free end of a pivoted, spring-tensioned arm 26 which is supported on a bracket 27 secured to an end wall of the reel housing and drawn outwardly by a spring 14, the roller acting to rotate the band and with it disc 2 by frietion exerted on the band. Roller 25 is driven by a belt 28 operable over sheaves 30 and 29 secured respectively to roller 25 and a shaft 31 which forms the pivot center for arm 26. Secured to the opposite end of shaft 31 is a disc 32 secured to shaft 31 and coacting in a friction-clutch relation with a sheave 33 free on shaft 31, a spring 38 interposed between a collar 36 secured to the free end of the shaft and sheave 33 acting to maintain a yieldable driving relation between the sheave and disc 32.
A series of spring-tensioned rollers 38 are secured to the stationary member 2 of the reel to support the film as the same is wound within the band 3, the rollers being mounted on springs 39 anchored on the disc as at 40, the rollers being operable in radial slots t1 and exerting light pressure on the film as the winding progresses. A releasing bar 42 having a notch 43 adapted to engage an edge of housing 1 acts to hold the winding roller 25 in raised position relative to the film upon completion of the winding operation to permit of removing the spool from the easin".
The invention serves to simplify the equipment required for the picture projecting apparatus and has the further important advantage of requiring less attention by the operator, thus providing an element of safety in the operation of the apparatus which requires more or less constant observation to insure safety.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A film take-up reel in combination, a spool, means including an operable spiral extended within and laterally beyond the plane of the spool on a center removed from the center of the spool and acting to divert the film within the plane of the spool, and pressure elements coacting with the spiral to guide and retain the film in engaged relation therewith as the end of the film is threaded thereover.

spool having a peripheral band, means for directing the film into the spool, a roller pivoted on a spring-tensioned arm, belt connected outside the plane of the spool and operable against the film, thus acting to rotate the spool and to effect internal winding of the film within said band, and a member depending from said arm for rais in the same and moving and supporting gird roller out of engagement of the wound In testimony whereof, I afiix my si nature.
