AUTOMATIC BRAKE-APPLYING MEANS.
Application filed February 7, 1928. Serial No. 252,578.
The general object of this invention is to provide means for applying the brakes of a train if any of the wheels thereof should leave the rails, thus avoiding accidents by the stoppage of the train immediately after one or more wheels thereof leave the track.
'Another object of the invention is to provide a valve in the brake line for each truck, with means for opening the valve if any of the wheels of the truck should leave the rails.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in, detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like character's denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which a Figure 1 is a plan view of a truck, showing the invention in use.

In these drawings, A indicates a valve casing arranged in the brake line B adjacent each truck of the train, this casing being provided with the lateral extensions 1 and 2, and 3 and 4 indicate a pair of valve sleeves passing through the casing and its extensions. Each sleeve is formed with the ports 5 at the center thereof which are arranged so that air can pass from one section of the brake line to the other at all times no matter what position the sleeves are in.
The extension 2 is formed with diametrically arranged ports 6 and the outer sleeve 3 is formed with the three ports 7 for uncovering the ports 6, two of these ports 7 being arranged diametrically opposite each other, with the third port intermediate the others. The inner sleeve 4 is provided with similarly arranged ports 8. An arm 9 is connected drawings with the outer sleeve 3 and an arm 10 is connected with the inner sleeve 4.
Each member 11 has a semi-circular part 12 at its lower end for engaging each axle 13 of each truck and a semi-circular part 14 is pivotally connected with the lower end of the semi-circular part 12 by the bolt 15, with its upper end adapted to be bolted to the lower end of the member 11, as shown 16, so that the parts 12 and 14 form a ring for surrounding the axle. The upper end of each member 11 passes through a slot formed in the lower end of the corresponding hanger 17 depending from the car body, and a coil spring 18 connectsthe upper end of the member 11 with the car body or with the hanger and tends to hold the member 11 and its associated parts in raised position. One of these members 11 is pivoted tothe outer end of the arm 9 and the other member 11, which is connectedwith the second axle of the truck, is pivotally connected to abell crank 19 supported by a hanger 20 and the second arm of this bell crank is connected by a link 21'with the arm 10.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the springs 18 hold both of the members 11 and their associated parts in raised position with the arms 9 and 10 in a position with the sleeves 3 and 4 having their ports arranged to close the ports 6 in the extension 2. If either of the wheels of the left hand axle 13 should leave the track, the dropping of the axle would pull the member 11 down wardly, thus causing it to lower the arm 9 which would move the outer sleeve 3 so that two of. its ports 7 would register with the ports 6 and as one of the ports 8 of the sleeve 4 is opposite one of the ports 6, the air in the line B would pass through these ports 8, 7 and 6 and thus the air line would be drained and the brakes applied so that the train would be stopped auton'iatically. If the other wheels of the truck should leave the rails at this time, the arm 10 would be moved to a position to turn the sleeve .4 so that two of its ports 8 will be opposite the ports 6 andthus the air will continue to drain from the air line. If the right hand wheel should leave the track before the left hand Wheel, the inner sleeve 4 would be moved to'place two of its ports 8 opposite the ports 6 and then the air would drain from the line through one of the ports 8, the port 7 of the sleeve 3 and one of the ports 6. Thus itwill be seen that if anyone or any number of the wheels of a triiek should leave the track, the air line will be opened and the brakes applied. Attention is called to the fact that but one valve is used for 'each"tiuck"and' that the parts forming the invention can be easily applied with but little change to the train parts and when it isknecessary 'to'provid-e new wheels on a truck the member 11 can be quickly detached from the axle by removing the bolts 16 and swinging the member 14 downwardly so that the member 1' 1 can be swung clear of the axle.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that 1 may make changes in the ctmstrnction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
1. In combination with the brake line of a train, a valve casingjin the brake line adjacent each track, supporting means above each axle of each truck, a member slidably supported thereby and'having a semi-circular lower part encircling a portion of the corresponding axle of the truck, a second semi-circular member pivotallyand mov'ably connected with the lowerend of the lirst semi-circular member and detachably connectcd at its upper end with the upper part of the first senn cn'cnlar n'iemb'er, a pair of v sleeves in the valve casing, means for moving one sleeve to open the valve when one of the sliding members is lowered by the lmvering of the axle to which it is attached, due to the wheels oi the. axle leaving the track and means for moving'thesecond sleeve to open the valve when the wheels oi the other axle of the truck leave the track.

Incombination'with the brake line'oi a train, a valve'casing therein adjacent c'ach truck, said casing liavinglatcral extensions. one of which is provided with a 'pairoi' diametrically arrai'lgg ed ports, a pairol' sleeves in the casing and its extensions having ports therein arranged to holdthe sections or the air line in colnmnnication with each other at all times, each sleeve having three ports therein for uncovering the ports in the extension, an arm on each sleeve, members havingth'cir lower parts encircling the respective axles of the track, means for slidingly supporting each member, a spring for bolding each member in raised pnsitiom one of the arms being connected with one member, a bell crank connected with the opposite member and a link connecting the hell crank with the second arm.
