APPARATUS FOR AEPLYING SPIRAL WRAPPINGS.

The invention relates to the art of spirally wrapping rubber hose, tubing, rubber covered rolls and the like with one or more 'wrappings of material prior to the curing or vulcanizing or other finishing treatment of the hoseor other article. 'In practice the hose or other article to be wrapped may be mounted in any suitable manner forrotation about its axis. Up to the present the mate- V rial to be spirally Wrapped upon the hose or other article, has been mounted in the form of a roll upon a spindle adapted to be carried in the hands of an operator who is compelled to manually manipulate the roll of material in oblique or other predetermined relation to the article to be wrapped. The end of the wrapping material, which generally is in a wet condition having been previously caused to adhere to the hose or other article, the latter as it rotates will cause the aforesaid material to be spirally wound upon Said hose or. other article. If, as is generally the case, an additional wrapping is to beapplied upon the first wrapping, the operative relation of the roll of material in the hands of the operator is reversed when a predetermined point in the hose or .otherarticle'is reached and the'operator at the. same time varies the manipulation of said roll of material accordingly. v
The second wrapping is generally wound upon the previous wrapping in reversed spiral relation thereto. Obviously with such manual application of the wrapping or wrappings, the control exercised by the operator is bound to vary with the result that the.
tomatically applied'to the hose or other article in auniform and most eflicient manner. Other objects of the invention will appear from the description hereinafter'and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the claims.

In order to separate these overlapping ends to prevent the material 24 from beingwrapped about the hose therewith, a device 24:? is pivoted at 24' and is pressed against the lowersurface of the material 24 as it passes fromthe roll 25. When an overlapping connection between two sections of material'reaches the device 24*,the latter serves by peeling off the one section to separate said two sections;

The latch 49 ismounted in and restored to its operative position by means of a spring a link Y52 and pin 34 with the arm of the switching device 333 'With this arrangement the weight 48 capable of being suspended in an inoperative position at a distance'above the weight 4421s indicated in Fig. 6 and the latch 49 will be operated to release's'aid weight 48 coinci- 'deritally with the actuation of" the switching device 33'36" in the performance of its several functions.
As shown in Figs. 3' and '5 provision is made for easily and quickly raising the weight 48 into position to be inoperatively suspended by'the latch 49 when this is desired. For this purpose racks 54 are fixed at diametrically opposite points exteriorly of the cylinder 14 as'shown in Fig. 5 and extending lengthwise thereof adjacent to slots 55 with which thecylinder 14 is provided. Pinions 56 are mounted upon a shaft 57 journalled in the tension developing means as sh-ownin Fig.5 and are arranged to travel lengthwise of the racks 54 a crank handle 58 is fixed on the shaft 57 to facilitate the rotation of'the pinions 56.
It will be obvious that as the crank han-- dle 58 is rotated in the proper direction the pinions 56 will be caused to travel upwardly along the racks 54 and will consequently raise the weights 44 and 48V until the groove 50 of the latter comes into registry with the latch 49' which thereupon will snap into said groove and retain the Weight in its elevated position. After the suspension of the weight 48 in its inoperative position has been accomplished, the weight 44 and its associated elements may be permitted to return to their normal position.

The end of the wrapper 24becauseof the fact that it is wet is then caused toadhere to the hose so that at this stage the material 24 is locatedin apositiont o be delivered from the roll 25 to the hose 65 in oblique relation thereto. As the hose is now causedto rotate about its axis the material 24 will be'withdrjawn from the roll 'and will be wound or wrapped upon saidhose; the endless chain iO being at the same time actuatedtocause its upper run to travel toward the right, in Fig; 1, the carrier with the roll 25 thereon 'wil'lbe drawn. along or shifted lengthwise of the rods 10 and consequently lengthwise of the hose in the same direction over a fixed path parallel with said'hose, as

Asthesmovement of the carrier, vor more specifically the slide 12 and support 13, con tinuetoward the right in Fig. 1, the stop 37 will exerta-v camming'action on" the switch arm 36-which will swmgthe support 13 on itsr pivot l lto the diagonal position shown hywfulllines in Fig. 2. At the same time the reversing switeh-37 will be operated to reverse the direction of travel of the chain to thereby cause the carrier and the roll 25 to travel in the opposite direction along the rods 10. Coincidentally with the above described actuation ofthe switch arm86, the, latching device 49 by means of the link 52 and pin 34 willbe withdrawn to an inoperative position and thereby permit theweightupon the material 24,while during the travel toward the left in Fig. 1 the efiect ofthe weight- 48 has been added so that the tensional strain upon the wrapping material is automatically increased As a result ofthis arrangement, the second wrapper b is ver closely and securely wrapped about the first wrapper a and thereby produces a most satisfactory product. VVhenthe carrier reaches its extreme position at the left in Fig. 1, the diagonalpositionl of the support 13 is again reversed by manual operation-of the switch 36-t0 again bringthe support 13 to the dot-ted line position in'Fig. 2 and to restore the delivery relation of the wrapping -24 to the hose as'it originally was.
The operation of the apparatus shown in- Figs. .7 and Sis the same as that above descrihed,'with the exception that as the switch 3fi cngages the stop 37 to reverse the diagonalposition of the support 13*, the latching devices 49* willbe coincidentally: and simultaneously actuated to release both .weights 48 The latter. may be lifted to an. elevated position to be agairi engaged by said latch ing devices 49*,throughthe mediumyof the cross bar 61. As shown in- Fig. 8. the apparatus isv constructed in a form in which the pull of the wrapping material 2a as it passes from the roll 25 to the hose is relied upon tdmaintainthe support 13* and its assooiated elements in its diagonal positions'on the slide 12*. .In other words, the locking means of the form first described. are omitted. I i y F WliiIe I have shownand described the apparatus in a forinadapted particularly for wrapping chose, it will be understood that i is equally well adapted for wrappingother articles such as tubing, rubber covered rolls etc. In addition, it. willbe obvious that a hose being wrapped may be. otherwise sup-,
ported and manipulated than shown, to produce I the desired results.
The apparatus is extremely simple in con: struction and efiicient in operation and operates to, provide the, hose, or: other article with one or more wrappings in reverse spiral relation to each other, under an even uniform tension, which maybe increased with successive wrappings. The wrapping apparatus n1aybeincorpo rated as apart of existing hose or other wrappingmachines or it may comprise-annit independent of such machines and capable of being set up in operative relationthereto. An apparatus for wrapping a rotating hose, comprising a guideway defining a fixed path lengthwise of and parallel with the rotating hose, a slide movable lengthwise of said guideway, a support pivotally mounted on said'slide to oscillate about an axis perpendicular to said slide and normally occupying a position diagonal thereto,
