TENSION MECHANISM.

This invention relates to tensioningde-- vices .for use on wrapping machines, especially, although not exclusively, wrapping machines wherein a rollof wrapping ma terial is rotatably mounted upon a shuttle which, in turn, is adapted to rotate around the article being wrapped, such as a tire.
The .invention contemplates the provision of an improved tensioning device adapted to exert a braking action preventing the free rotation of the roll of wrapping material by a brake mechanism mounted for engagement with the rotatable reel or spool carrying the roll of wrapping material, said tensioning device being of the type wherein thebraking force is automatically proportioned to the diameter of theroll, being of simple but effective construction, and being so disposed upon the shuttle as to minimize the action of centrifugalforce due to the rotation of the shuttle when employed in connection with shuttles of the rotary type. The foregoing and other objects of the invention will be more clearly understood from the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawmgs, in

The machine shown in the drawings for the purpose of illustration comprises a base 10 carrying uprights 11 in which rollers12 are suitably mounted for rotation and are arranged to be driven' by any suitable driving mechanism, generally indicated at 33, to rotate the article or work W which is to be wrapped. The article is appropriately held in contact with the rollers 12 by a roller 13 rotatably mounted upon a weighted arm14 pivotally secured to a post 15 mounted upon the base 10. A shuttle 16 provided with a tongue 17 is held for rotation between a plurality of rollers 18, having grooves 19, rotatably mounted upon the yoke 21 pivotally mounted to turn about a shaft 22 in a support 23 extending upwardly from the base 10. The yoke 21 is adjustably secured in a post 25 on the base 10 by a clamp 26. The shuttle 16 may be rotated around the article to be wrapped in any appropriate manner such-as by a friction disc '31 secured to'the shaft 22 and engaging a friction roller 32 upon the armature shaft of a motor 33. spool or reel 34 is rotatably mounted upon a stud 58 fixed to the shuttle to support a roll 35of wrapping material, such as paper.
The invention particularly contemplates the provision of an improved mechanism of simple construction adapted to apply a substantially constant tensionto the strip S of wrapping material as it is drawn from the roll. This device, as illustrated, is mounted upon the shuttle 16 and comprises a supporting plate 36 secured to the shuttle 16by. screws passing through the "holes 37 and 38 in the plate.
