PIPE HANGER.
Application filed July 16, 1925. Serial No. 44,057.
This invention relates to devices for suspending sewer and waste pipes and the like from the floor joists of buildings when installing the plumbing equipment.
I-Ieretofore two types of hangers have been commonly employed, one of which is a plain metal strip adapted to be passed around the pipe and have its ends nailed to the joists, and the other of which is a strip provided with apertures for receiving quarter inch bolts commonly known as stovebolts, one end of the strip being nailed to a joist. Both of these devices require an excessive amount of time to install, and neither is conducive to accurate adjustment. When using the plain strip it is difficult to anchor or nail the second end in position for proper adjustment, and when using the apertured strip the range of adjustment is limited by the spacing of the holes which receive the bolts.
These objections are overcome by the pre ent invention whose chief object is to provide a hangar which may be quickly placed and by means of which a sewer or waste pipe may be suspended in properly adjusted position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hanger which not only will have the characteristics stated but also shall be.
simple and cheap to construct.
The invention comprises an elongated strip having a plurality of spaced slots extending longitudinally thereof whose length is at least equal to the width of certain portions of the strip so that such portions may be passed through a slot and then bent or twisted beyond. the slot to maintain the rela tion. Preferably the strip is of uniform width and the slots are just long enough to receive an end of the strip. The invention resides further in the features of construction disclosed herein, pointed out in the appended claim, and illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings wherer in,
Fig. 1 is an edge elevation of one form of the hanger in operative position, a waste pipe and a joist from which it is supported being shown in cross section.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof taken at right angles to the showing of Fig. 1.

An ordinary floor joist 10 is shown as supporting a waste pipe 12 by means of the hanger strip 14 of the present invention. The strip 14 is shown as being of uniform width, which is the preferred construction, and a plurality of spaced slots 15. are disposed longitudinally of the strip, each slot 15 being just slightly longer than the width of the strip and slightly wider than the thickness of the strip. By this construction a strip end may be passed readily through a slot 15. i r
In using the hanger to suspend a pipe 12, which may be sewer pipe, waste pipe, or other pipe forming a part of the plumbing of the building, a piece of required length is cut from a supply reel and the upper end of the piece is secured to a joist by means of a nail 16 which is passed through one of the slots 15. The lower portion of the strip is then carried around the pipe 12 and the free end is twisted through 90 and passed through one of the slots 15 above the pipe. The pipe may then be positioned at any desired elevation and the hanger strip drawn up through the slot in which it lies to take up all slack, whereupon the free end is bent sharply againstthe back of the strip as best seen. in Fig. 3 and is then wrapped around the vertical portion of the strip in the formof a loop 18 which positively maintains the relation of the parts.
Thus it will be seen that a pipe may be quickly suspended and adjusted with the placing of but a single nail, the lower end of the hanger being quickly secured by forming the loop 18 with a pair of pliers or even with a hammer.
JVhat I claim is:
An adjustable pipe hanger comprising a strip of easily flexed sheet metal, one end of the strip being adapted to be secured to a support, said strip having a plurality of longitudinally disposed elongated slots, the length of said slots being greater than the width of the strip, whereby the full width of the strip may be passed through one of the slots and wrapped transversally one or more times around the strip to form a pipe securing loop.
