This invention pertains to adevice for facilitating the removal of shackle bolts from automobiles and similar vehicles, and has for its object the provision of such a de- 5 vice which is steady in operation, easily constructed, and which is inexpensive to manufacture.
In automobiles, for example, at times, there may be wear on the shackle bolt connecting the springs and beams with the body, so that removal of these bolts becomes desirable for replacement, or for repairing.
The device of the present invention facilitates the removal of these bolts when such is desired, and does so in an expeditious manner and with a minimum of trouble.
The construction of the device will be apparent from the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through the frame member and connected spring of an automobile, showing in elevation, the device of the present invention applied thereto.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device itself consists of a standard 1 which is formed with threads along the.
greater part of its length, and carries an adjustable clamping device of U-shape in cross section represented generally at 6, which device is slidable'along the standard 1 by reason of its threaded connection therewith. One end of the standard is flattened and formed as an eye to which is secured a fixed clamping member 2, provided with a movable jaw l, which is operated upon screw threads by the turning of member 3.
Threadedly engaging the standard 1 is the standard 1 is prevented by a pin 11, which passes through an opening in the standard for this purpose.
Y In operation the clamp 2 is placed in engagement with th frame of the vehicle and the movable jaw 4 moved up against the side of said body, and is secured in position by the manipulation'of the member 3. Clamp 6 is moved in position for registering with the spring 8, and is secured in position by the lock nut 5. Members 7 and 7 which may be called clamping screws are then operated until they come into contact with the spring 8, as shown in Figures 1 and 3 and are clamped tightly upon the spring. The spring further contacts with the lug 12 as shown in Fig. 1, this lug preventing any distortion of the spring, and also facilitating the holding of the clamping member 6 in rigid position. The device being thus secured both to the body of the machine and to the spring, pressure is exerted upon the device, which relieves the tension ofthe 1 spring upon the bolts 9 so that the bolts 9 may be readily removed whenever desired.

1. An instrument of the class described comprising a standard, a clamping member fixed in position longitudinally thereon and laterally adjustable relatively thereto, a second clamping member mounted on the standard for adjustment longitudinally thereof, and means operable to secure the second clamping member in adjusted posi tion on the standard.
2. A device of the character described comprising a standard, a clamping member fixed in position on the standard, a second clamping member adjustable longitudinally along said standard, and relatively to the first clampingmember, and means for setting the movable clamping member in position upon the standard.
3. A device as set forth in claim 2 in which the second clamping member includes oppositely directed and operating screw members adapted to move toward each other.
4. A device to facilitate the removal of shackle bolts on vehicles Which comprises a standard having thereon clamping means adapted to fit the frame of the chassis, a second and relatively movable clamping means adapted to grip the spring of the vehicle and mounted for adjustment longitudinally of the standard, and means engaging with said standard for securing the said second damping means in adjusted position.
5. A device as set forth in claim 4 in which the movable clamping member comprises a clamp screw support and oppositely disposed clamping screws extending through the support.
