This invention relates to certain new and` useful improvements in shipping vtags to be attached` to containers or other articles of` p merchandise, or anthing to be shipped, o r
sent by mail or otV erwise, and is designed more particularly as an improvement upon i that general class of tags or the like designed to be used as a return receiptv for :the goods` sent,` so that the .shipper lnay have positive evidence of the safe receipt of the goods and also the dateof receipt, if desirechfthe tag embodying a member which vvillserveas a Y record of the shipment andreceipt.
i The present invention has Vfor its objects among othersto provide a,simple,cheap,'-` yet most efficient .shipping tag. for the varlous uses to which a tag ofthis general character ma be readily put, and in which the main or ody portion of the tag is the portion to be returned tothe shipper, the said body portion `being formed with slits. to receive and hold the removable member, the slits,
. being so formed and arranged as to securely n hold the said removable membenwhich lat` ter may Vbe easily removed Whenjthe package arrives at its destination, andthe removal of this member leaves the body member ready to be returned tothe shipper, without the necessityof anything beingdone to either member, the name and address of the sender being placed on the same before shipment of the goods. The -removable member cannot be accidentally removed, and may contain all the data necessary in such cases. The present invention has for a further object the production of such a shipping tag as above briefly outlined at small cost, and one that will be durable and which can be manufactured by simple machinery.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter ap ear and the novel features thereof will e specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention', in its preferred form, is clearly illustrated in `the accompanying drawings, which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, from a. part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a face view of the tag as it is to be attached to the goods to be shipped.
Figure 2 is a face View of the body portion` with the removable member detached and showing 'the tag as it is to be Sent '90 the Shipper af the seeds. f
i Figure 3 is a view of thejremovable, member, removed from the body portion. i i Figure ,4 is asection as on thelline 'lr-4 of Figurel. i
Figure is a crosssection as on the line 5.5 0f Figure l.y 4 i Figure `Gis a 'crosssection as G-Gof Figure 1.` i
- Like numeralsof referencefindicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings i 1 desi nates the` body` portion, and 2 the removab e member.`
i on the line The body or main portion 1` is provided with substantially parallel cross sllts 3 and 4 at requisite `distances fromeach other upon w opposite sidesvof the'l mediancentre of the portion Las seen best in Figure 2, and terminating at` their ends Within `the edges of the said portionas seen clearly in Figure 2.
`In each portion of4 the member 1 bet-Ween each `cross slit and the url 'acent end of the member 1 are two opposite yA inclined slits 5 and .6 asseen in FiglirevQ.` i t t Upon the member 1 maybe printed or Written, or` otherwise. applied, the name and address of the shipper, such, for instance, as seen in Figure 2 at 7, this serving as the This member 1 may also have thereon any `return address towhichpmaybe returned the "container, orthe goods 1n caseythe person to further printed or written matter, such, for p instance as shown in this instance Do not remove this tag, or any other desired instructions, etc.
lThe member 2 is of less dimensions than the main or body portionl, as seen in Figures 1 and 3 and may have thereon any desired data, for instance, as seen in Figure 3 ithas a place and data to indicate to the party sending the goods whereto place the nume and address of the party to whom the goods are to be shipped, as at 8, and below, at a pointwhere it will be readily seen when the goods arrive at` their desination, the words Pull this slip out when returning package to shipper or, such other instrucstructions as may be desirable. i i i The members 1 and 2 are intended to be of suticient stability as to stand the usage x provided for that purpose.
In rmarking the shipment for its initial transportation the member 2 will be inserted in place on the member 1 the said member 2 being slipped under the centre flap or poriion 9 between the cross slits 3 and il, placing each otthe four corners ofthe member 2 into their respective corner angular cuts 5 and 6 as shown in Figure l. The goods are shipped, and upon their arrival at their destination the member 2 is removed from the main. or body portion 1 and returned, either with or Without the container, to the shipper.
' By means of the cross slits and the diagonal or angular slits the member 2 1s held "securely in place and cannot become ,de-
tached*accidentally during shipment. There are no pro]ect1ng parts to become caught 1n other packages, and there 1s nothing to be done by the party receiving the package except to remove the member 2 and attach the member l to the container, or return it to the sender.
In view of my invention and disclosure variations and modiiications to meet individual whim or particular need will doubtless become evident to others skilled in the art, to obtain part or all of the benefits of my invention without copying the structure shown, and I therefore claim all such in so far as they fall within the reasonable spirit and scope of my invention.
For instauce,I may sometimes make the body portion of this sheet 'of metal, struck up, or otherwise made to the desired form, and this may be made to contain a numbervor multiplicity of removable members 2, and the device used :t'or purposes other than as a shipping tag. It may be conveniently used ior the transportation of picture iilms or the like, the various members 2 being designed so that the film may be forwarded in the same body portion from'one theatre to another, the members 2 being removed, one at a time, as occasion may require, and the Vmembers 2 used in any desired way, the
members 2 being designed to be signed upon the backs thereof by the receivers of the shipment and the members 2 preserved as` a record.
VThat is claimed as new is l. A shipping tag embodying a body portion with transverse and angularly-disposed slits, and a removable member detachably held by means of said transverse and angularly-disposed slits, the corners and central portion of said 'member all being upon the side of the body portion opposite to 'that of the other-portions of said member.
2. A shipping tag embodyinga body portionwith median transverse slits and angularly-disposed slits upon opposite sides of the first-named slits and adjacent the corners of such member, and a member removably held to the body portion by said slits, with a portion of the said member disposed upon the back of the body portion between the median slits.
In testimony whereof I'afiix my signature.
