Patented May 8, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WIN DOW-CLEANING DEVICE.
Application filed February 4, 1926. Serial No. 85,897.
My invention relates to improvements in window cleaning devices, and more particularly has reference to and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in its application to a window cleaner adapted to be operated by hand entirely from the inside of the room, and is adapted to simultaneously clean both sides of the glass of both upper and lower sash.
Referring to said drawings, Fig. 1 illustrates in side elevation, parts being in, section, a suitable form of window cleaner embodying an ap lieation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view rom right to eft thereat. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the back of the cleaning pad, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same opened out.
6 indicates a U-shaped tube of brass, aluminum or other suitable material having therein a cable of Bowden wire, braided metal or the like, as shown. The free ends of the cable are secured to rods 7 7' which may be rectangular in cross section, and which pass through tube caps 6 having central rectangular guide openings therein, the outer ends of said rods being provided with clamps or couplings 8, 8 brackets 9, 9',
carrying blocks 10, 10 over which fabric, chainois, or the like may be titted to form a pad or cleaning surface. Such an envelope of flannel or felt, with or without padding is shown to advanta e in 3.; Figs. 4 and 5, and consists of a stoc inglike structure 12, cut awa at the back as indicated at 13, to clear tlie brackets 9, 9', and having a lower flap 14 with suitable fastening means for retaining the same in position when applied. Either or both of ha ving.
the brackets 9, 9, may be made more or less resilient, and the handles 15, 16 serve to facilitate the manipulation of the device so as to jointly and oppositely move the pads up and down opposite sides of the window pane, the handle 16 being secured to the frame or tube 6 for moving the cleaner over the surfaces of the glass, and the handle 15 being more particularly adapted for pressing the pads against the glass during the cleaning operation.
In applying the cleaner to a window, the sash is inserted between the pads, the clearance in the U-frame being suilicient to facilitate cleaning the entire surfaces of the glass. 17 is a roller which may be mounted in the yoke of the frame to facilitate rolling the same upon the bottom of the window frame instead of scraping the same during the cleaning operation. 0 Of course it will be understood that such modifications may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts as do not depart from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
I claim: In a window cleaner of the class described, a hollow U-shaped frame, a flexible transmission slidable therethrough, guide means secured to the free ends of said flexible transmission also slidable within said frame, cleaning means secured at the other ends of said guide means, and means for moving said cleaning means over opposite sides of a window while said window extends within 7 said U-shaped frame.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
AUGUST HORMEL.
