This invention relates to locking devices and more particularly to that type of locking device especially7 adapted. tor usein connection with sliding sash windows for l1miting the extent to which the sashes can be opened.
An object ot this `invention is to provide an improved device ot the type set .torth' ot such construction and arrangement that a single lock will be suttlcient'to prevent the opening of both the upper and lower window sashes beyond a predetermined l extent.
Ay further object is to provide a window lock of the type set forth of simple and rugged yconstruction which will be cheap to manufacture, reliable in operation and easily applied to any window ot the sliding sash type, and which will `not impede nor hinder the normal operation of the window sash when the lock is rendered inelective.
These and other objects which will be apparent `to those skilled in this particular art are attained by means ot the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view through a window provided with one form ot this invention and illustrating the same `in its open ative position. Fig. 2 is a sectional View along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.' Fig. 3` is a cross section on the line 3-3 ot Fig. 1,` illustrating the present invention inoperative locking position and Fig. 4t is a similar view showing the window unlocked. Fig. V5 is a detail view of one form ot window sash adapted to be used with the illustrated embodiment ot this invention and Fig. 6 is a sectional View thereof. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 5 ot a somewhat dit ferent form ot window sash and Fig. 6 is a sectional view thereof.
The particular embodiment ot this invention which has been chosen for the purn lposes of illustration is shown applied to an ordinary double sash window of the sliding type which is formed by a window trame 10 provided. with an upper sash 11. slidably mounted in the usual slideways 12 and a lower sash 13 is mounted in slideways 14 and cooperating with the upper sash 11 in the usual manner to close the window. The inner side of the slideway 14 is formed bythe usual strip 15. n
As illustrated, the lock forming the present invention is in the form of a stop or block 16 hinged to one side of the frame l() in a slot 17 formed in the strip 15 for the purpose of receiving the block 16 so that the latter may be swung into such position as to extend across the slideway Mier the lower sash. Obviously, when in this position theblock forms a positive stop which definitely limits the extent ot upward 1novement which can be given tothe lower win! dow sash. The stop block has a groove 18 formed therein for the reception of the usual eounterbalancel chain 19 connected to the lower sash.
The locking block 16 is so arranged that the locking mechanism therefor forms lock for theupper sash. The arrangement is such that the upper sash `may be locked thereby in any predetermined position or may be conned to a limited movement ot predetermined extent, so that the single device serves as a locking medium for both sashes. "As illust-rated, this mechanism is formed by a key operated locking bolt 20 slidably mounted in the block 16 and adapte ed to be moved into a cooperating locking recess formed in the adjacent surface of the upper window sash and which may be in the torni either ofthe continuous groove 21 illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 or the spaced i locking recesses 22 shown in Figs. 7 and v8. It will be apparentthat when the locking bolt 20 is in cooperating relation with the locking groove 21 or one of the locking recesses 22, that the block 16 is positively locked in operative position so as to limit the opening of the lower sash and at the same time the locking bolt prevents the upper sash being opened more than its alotted extent.
In order to relieve the hinge supporting the block 16 from undue strains the block is provided with a rugged strain bearing lug 23 adapted to be received 'within a recess 24 formed in the adjacent portion oi"y the Window frame 10. lt will be apparent that this recess may be reinforced by a slotted plate 24 and that any jarring to whichv the locking block is subjected will thus be borne by the lug 23 and the supporting portion of shown in Fig. It, in which it in no Way impodes or hampers the movement of either sash.
Ordinarily the form of upper sash having a groove 2l, as illustrated in Figs. l to 6, Will be preferred as this form permits the upper sash of the WindonT to be opened or shifted Within its limits of movement Without the necessity of unlocking ofrwithdrawing the locking' bolt 20.
It will, of course be apparent that the groove 2l will preferably he formed in e metal plate 2li which isset into the sash so that its surface is flush With the sash surfaee; and that similar plates may be employed in connection with the recesses 22. The plate Q4 may also he so formed that it reinforces or supports the ends of the sash parting' strip Q5, which as shown in Fig. 1, is formed in two parts so that the loclt may perform the double function of locking both sashes.
Although I have described a specific arrangement it Will be apparent that various changes, additions, omissions and substitutions ean he made therein without departing from the spirit of this invent-ion or the scope of the appended claims.
Vihat- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination With a Window of a, bleek hinged to the frame thereof and movable into the pathway of one sash so as to limit the opening thereof, means on said block for limiting' rthe opening of the other sash and means for relieving said hinge of jarring' strains produced by said sashes striking' the block. y
2. `The combination with a Window of a liloek hinged to the frame thereof and movable into the pathway of one sash so as to limit the opening thereof, means on said bleek for limiting the opening of the other sash, a recess in the frame of said Window and a pin in said block receivable Wit-hin said recess for relieving said hinge of the strains caused by said. sashes striking said block,
