UNITED STATES y 1,668,229 PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK CALVO, OF WATERBUBY, CONNECTICUT.
CALLOUS PROTECTOR.
Application filed May 16,
This invention relates to foot appliances, and more. particularly to a protecting device forv callouses or other abnormal conditions upon the sole of a foot.
One object otthis invention is to provide a callous protector adapted to be accurately adjusted to the size oi a `foot and to the position oit a callous upon said toot.
A further object is to provide a callous protector of this nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, compact, ornamental inappearance, and very efficient and durable in use. j
Vith these and other objects in view there have been illustrated on the accompanying drawings two forms in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.
Fig. 1 represents a plan view of the first embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is afsectional View ot the same, taken along the line 2-2 of Fig 1,looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view ot thesame, taken along the line 3--3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 4 is a side view of a human foot, showing one of the callous protectors in opj erating position.
Fig. 5 `is a bottom plan view of amodified form of callous protector having an eXtensible front strip.
Fig.v 6 is a pers ective view of 'the extensible ront strip siiown in Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a sectional vieW taken along the line 7-7 ofFig. `5, looking in the direction of the arrows. v
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates a callous protecting pad ot' leather, rubber, or other suitable cushioning material adapted to be located under the sole of a foot 11 just inthe rear of the `position of a callous 12. The pad 10 is preferably made substantially rectangular in shape 'i with flat top and bottom surfaces 13 and 14. rl'he corners 15 oit the pad 10 are curved as shown in Fig. 1, and the top ed es 16 thereof are rounded as shown in Big. 3,
whereby a smooth surface will be presented,
and all possibility of scratching or otherwise injuring the foot will be avoided.
The pad 10 is provided on its under surface with a pair of spaced sockets 16 adapted t0' be held in alinement with a pair of structed from thin metal and havin 1927. Serial No. 191,671.
apertures 16b in a metal base `plate 17, the latter heilig permanently secured to the pad 10 in any suitable manner, by rivets 17a. A second metal plate 18 is pivotally secured to said plate 17, as by a hinge 18a, and is adapted to be detachably held in closed position parallel to said base plate 17 by a resilient catch member 19 formed integral with the base late 17.
In or`er to maintain the leather pad 10 in the proper adjusted position within a shoe 20, provision is made ot' an elongated relatively stitf base strip 21 preferably concurved ends 22 and 23. The base strip 21 1s adapted to be located between the base plate 17 and the hinged plate 18, as shown in Figs. 1 and The base strip 2l has'a plurality ot' spaced apertures 24 which are adapted to be brought into alinement with the pair of sockets 16 in the pad 1() and the apertures 16", so that when the hinged plate 18 is moved into closed position adjacent the base plate 17, a pair of tapered eyelets 18a on said hinged plate 18 will pass through the two apertures 24 of the base strip 21 which are in alinement with the apertures 16b in the base plate 17 and will extend a short distance inside said sockets 16a. By means ot' this construct/on, the pad 10 will be detachably locked in any desired adjusted position along the length of the base strip 21.
In order to prevent the possibility of injury to the stocking or foot of the user, and also to :render the device more comfortable when worn in a shoe, the base strip 21 is covered with a protecting cloth 25 having'its edges secured together as by a row of stitching 26, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
In order to cushion the heel of the foot, a substantially semi-circular heel pad is mounted on the rear ofthe base strip 21. This heel pad comprises a top stiff leather plate 26a and a lower flexible leather disc 26" secured to the plate 26il in any suitable manner, as by a suitable adhesive. The rear end of the base strip 21 is adapted to be frictionally held between the top plate 26a and. the lower dise 26".
In operation, ythe callous protector will be placed within the shoe 2() under the foot 11 with the protecting pad 10 adjusted to the proper position justin the rear of the callous 12, as shown in Fig. 4. It will thus be seen that the weight of the foot will be kept Q ff, the callous 12, permitting the blood to .riti
circulate therein and enabling the abnormal condition to be rapidly cured.
In the modified form of the .invention shown in Figs. 5 to T, a pad 27 is provided which is similar in all respects to the pad l() previously described, The base strip in this instance` however, is made in two overlapping sections 28 and 29 which are relativelyv slidable, so as to ermit the callous protector to be readily a justed to fit various sizes of shoes. vThe front strip section 28 is provided at its rear end with a pair of upwardly and inwardly directed flanges 30 and 31 which are adapted to form a guideway for the front part of the rear section Q9. The sections 28 and 29 are provided with spaced perforations 32 and 233 which are adapted to be broughtI into alineinent with each other so as to permit the pair of holding screws 34 to be inserted therethrough for holding the sections Q8 and 25) and the protecting pad 2T in their proper adjusted positions.
In order to provide a` cushion for the heel oft' the foot, a heel pad is provided. This heel pad, as shown in Fig. 5 comprises a top stiif plate 35 adapted to lie above the strip section 29 and a lower flexible plate 36 adapted to lie under the section Q9. The plates 35 and 3G are preferably substantially .semi-circular and constructed of leather. They are adapted`to be held securely to- ;cther by a row of stitches 87, as shown in Figs. 5 and 7.
While there have been disclosed in lthis specification two forms in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that these forms are shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specilic disclosures but may be modified and embodied in various other `forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the inoditications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
