SOUN DIN G- TOY.
Applieationfled September 25, 1926. Serial Io. 137,780.
My invention relates to improvements in sounding toys in which an attractively designed body of a fowl or an animal is provided with wheels to bear upon the ground and actuate a sound producing mechanism located in a sound chamber within the body of the toy; the toy being provided with a suitable handle for pushing it along the ground.
The principal objects of my invention are to provide a novel design of a sounding toy which will be attractive to a child, durable and long lived, and will cost the minimum to manufacture. These and other objects that will be brought out more fully are obtained by the mechanism and the design shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a side View of my invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom view of my invention; Fig. 3 is an end view showing the detailed construction of the toothed metal wheel which opcrates in conjunction with a spring metal reed to emit sounds; Fig. 4 is a cross section of the toothed wheel taken on the line A-A and shows the keys cast integral with the bore of the wheel.
Similar numerals. will refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the figures the numeral 1 refers to the body part of the toy which is preferably made of wood and to which is secured the head 2 b means of the nail 3. 4 refers to a wooden andle having a ball 5 on one end and the other end securely fitted in the body of the toy and communicatin with the sound chamber which is also in the body of the toy. The numeral Grefers to wooden wheels secured on the wooden shaft 7 which is journaled in the bod part and passes through the sound cham er 10, which consists of a mortised slot in the body part of the toy. 8 refers to the nickel lated tacks which are driven through the w eels 6 into the shaft 7. They help keep the wheels on shaft and are ornamental. The numeral 9 refers to a toothed metal wheel which may be cast or made of a pressed or punched metal. It is located inside the sound chamber and the wooden shaft 7 is driven through it. The toothed wheel is prevented from turning on the wooden shaft 7 by means of the key 11 which is cast or punched integral with the bore of the wheel. 12 refers to a spring steel reed securely fixed in the end of the wooden handle 1 and positioned to engage the teeth in the toothed wheel 9 so as to produce a.
snapping sound when the wheels are caused to revolve by pushing the toy along the ground.
Referring again to the toothed Wheel 9 shown in detail in Figs. 3 and 4 it will be noticed that two keys 11 are shown in the bore of the wheel for constructional reasons,
it being possible to get as good results from one key or a number of them if so desired, or if so desired the wheel can have its bore made smaller than the shaft and the shaft driven tightly through the bore; in this case the frictional resistance due to the drive fit on the wooden shaft is ample to hold the wheel from turning.
Having thus described my invention and being fully aware that wheeled sounding toys have been made before I am limiting my claims to the construction shown in the drawings and described in the specification.
I claim:
1. A sounding figure wheeled toy comprising a body having a recess and an opening communicating with said recess, a handle received in said opening, a head pivotally.
mounted on said body, a sound making device in said recess, said sound making device comprising a shaft, a metal toothed wheel having projections on its inside periphery by which it is rigidly secured to said shaft, a metal reed engaging said metal toothed wheel and fastened to said handle, wheels rigidly mounted on said shaft for rotating said metal toothed wheel.
2. A sounding figure wheeled toy comprising a body having a recess and an opening communicating with said recess, a handle received in said opening, a sound making device in said recess, said sound making de vice comprising a shaft, a metal toothed Wheel having projections on its inside periphery by which it is rigidly secured to said shaft, a metal reed engaging said metal toothed wheel and fastened to said handle, Wheels rigidly mounted on said shaft for rotating said metal toothed wheel.
3. A sounding figure wheeled toy comprising a body having a recess and ahandle, a sound making device in said recess, said sound making device comprising a shaft, a metal toothed wheel having projections on its inside periphery by which it is rigidly secured to said shaft, a metal reed engaging said metal toothed wheel and fastened to said body, wheels rigidly mounted on said shaft for rotating said metal toothed Wheel.
4. A sound making device comprising a shaft a metal toothed Wheel having projections on its inside periphery by which it is rigidly secured to said shall a metal reed engaging said metal toothed wheel and fastened to the toy body, wheels rigidly mounl- 10 ed on said shaft for i'otnling said melal loothed Wheel.
In testimony whereof I alilx my signature.
JAMES V. DOUGHERTY.
