Description

May 1, 1928.
Q. ROGERS HORSE COLLAR Filed Jan. '7. 1927 pad.
Patented May 1, 1928.
I cr mson ,1). Beams; joi" ,namrnxsamsnsssss. 2
' '1':soasmmaij" A pneanm-eiea January 7, 1 327; Se'rial No.'159-;566,
This: inventi on .a relates to .in'iproven'ients in draft collars for use on horses "or iotne'r animals and more particulia rly to the construction of the upper portionthereof whereby they may be made adjustable for more than one size neck and whereby such an adjustable collar can be economically made.
In collar construction numerous endeavors have been made to reduce the-cost of construction as for instance by building a Collar with a straight and crook of separate pieces and covering the joint with a wear strip, but it has been universal practice to make the upper portion of the collar at least in so far as the rim and face are concerned of continuous pieces of leather so that the upper portion of the collar is unitary with the draft portion thereof. I
The objects of my invention are,
(a) To make a collar having a complet body or draft portion and an independent attachable neck portion;
(b) To make an improved collar pad therefor, and
(0) To generally improve the construction and arrangement thereof.
The means by which the foregoing and other objects are accomplished by my inven- I tion, and the manner of their accomplishment, will readily'be understood from the following description on reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved collar.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of the upper end of the collar.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line III-III of Fig. 2. 7 V r Fig. 4 is an'edge view of the upper end shown in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the collar Referring now to the drawings in which the various parts are indicated by numerals, the collar comprises a body 'or draft portion 10 and a neck portion 11.
The body of the collar may be made up of a rim 12, preferably of one piece, faces 13, only one of hich can be seen, and straights 14 and crooks 15, the'straight and crookon each side preferably being a single piece. The rim 12 is folded over and stuffed and the two edges 16 brought together and secured to one edge of the face 13 and the straight 14, or crook 15 as the case may be,
by the thong 17 or other stitching. The
barele ge 180f the M :1-3, is similarly Se;-
cn n'ed toithe other edge of the: straight14,
or .crook.15,;bythethonglt), and is stuifed in any usual manner- The stufling 'inthe upper ends of the body portion thus formedterminates just below the neck portion so that the body may be flattened at 20 to receive the neck portion. These body portions thus may be made in a single size, though preferably in at least two sizes, for a large number of sizes of collars. I
'The neckportion 11 of the collar, comprises two- flatneck straps 21 and 22 and a collar pad 23. Each of these neck straps is a flat member, made up of three thicknesses 24, 25 and 26 the portion 26 being a filler. Preferably 24 and 25 are separate pieces united into one as by stitching 27, as shown in the section. Fig. 3 with the filler 26 placed therebetween. 1
The upper edges ofthe body portion are preferably thinned to a feather edge as indicated by the thinned portion 28 of the edges 18 (Fig. 4). Y The lower edge 29 of the filler 26 is similarly thinned as are also the lower edges of the portions 24 and 25, and
these latter are slipped over the upper end of the body portion and secured thereto as .by a thong-30. 31 are holes through the neck straps.
The collar pad 23, comprises a shaped heavy leather piece 32 having straps 33, 34 in pairs, one of each pair being provided with a buckle'35. 36 is a metal plate secured to the leather piece 32, this plate having secured thereto and projecting upward therefrom a pair of pins each of which is crimped intermediate its lengthito provide corrugations which assist in securing the neck straps when the. pins are' passed 1 through the holes31 therein.
By the expedient of varying the'length of the neck straps the collars may initially be made of several sizes with a single size of body portion and by providing a number of pairs of holes in these straps an even further adjustment may be made during the use.
of the collar. g
In use the collarfis'identical with those commonly in use, except that it may be fitted at will to larger or smaller necks, and need not be further connected on. It will ofv course be understood that I do not desire to limit myself to the exact demi] of construction-herein shown and desire to avail myself of all modifications lying within the language of the claims.
Having thus disclosed the invention, What I claim is:
1. A collar comprising a'loody portion having its upper ends terminating in the double thickness of cover material only, and having these ends thinned to a feather edge, a pair of flat neck straps, each comprising a plurality of thicknesses of material, having its loWer edges thinned to a feather edge,
I each of said straps embracing the upper end ee' /gem of one of said collar ends, and means for se curing said neck straps.-
2. A collar, comprising a body portion having its upper ends terminating in fiattened ends, and having these ends thinned to a feather edge, a pair of flat neck straps, each having its lower edge thinned to a feather edge, each of said straps secured to a collar end.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set
