' J. D. WALKER BOOK HOLDER Original Filed Aug. 29, 1925 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 17, 1928 UNITED STATES JOSEPH D. WALKER, 0F WHITESBURG, TENNESSEE.
BOOK HOLDER.
Application filed August 29, 1925, Serial No. 53,391. Renewed March 5, 1928.
This invention relates to book stands, an object being to provide a stand of neat and attractive appearance and by means of which a book may be-supported in position to suit the convenience of the reader, means being provided for adjusting the inclination of the book and the relative inclination of the leaves, together with means for regulating the height of the book.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a stand or support as above set forth, which is capable of being compactly folded or taken apart, so that it maybe conveniently stored or shipped.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to
be hereinafter more fully described, i llustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings. Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stand constructed in accordance with the invention. Figure 2 is an end view of the book holder. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the same. Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference'denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a horizontally disposed supporting arm which is shown as mounted upon a standard 11 and for this purpose, the arm is provided at one end with a sleeve 12 through which the standard passes. The standard 11 rises from a suitable base 13 and is provided with spaced openings 14 for the reception of a pin 15, the latter supporting a washer 16 which is mounted upon the standard and upon which the lower end of the sleeve 12 rests. The arm 10 will thus be rotatably supported and may be vertically adjusted. The arm 10 is of sectional formation and the sections are hingedly connected as shown at 17 so that the outer end of the arm may be horizontally adjusted independently of the inner end.
The arm 10 supports a book holder and the latter includes a pair of supporting plates 18 which are hingedly connected as shown at 19 so that these plates may be relatively adjusted. The plates 18 are connected by an end plate 20 and the latter is provided with arcuate slots 21. These slots receive screws 22 which are carried by flanges 23 at I the ends of the plates 18 and the screws have mounted thereon winged nuts 24. The lates 18 may thus be relatively adjusted an held in adjusted position.
Hingedly secured to the plates 18 upon the pin of the hinge19 is an adjusting plate 25. This plate is provided with an arcuate slot 27 provided in the outer section of the arm 10. The plate 25 is pivotally secured to the outer end of the arm 10 as shown at 28 and extending through the slots 26 and 27 is a screw 29 which has mounted thereon an adjusting nut 30. The inclination of the book holder mav thus be regulated.
It will'be apparentfrom the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that the invention provides a book stand which includes a book holder constructed so as to be adjusted to suit the convenience of the reader, as well as folded into compact form, or readily taken apart or put together.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction andthe right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the-appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is z- Y 1. A book stand comprisinga horizontally disposed arm, means to support the arm, a book holder at the outer end of said arm, said holder comprising a pair of hingedly connected book supporting plates, means connecting the plates to permit of pivotal adjustment, an adjusting plate having one edge hingedly connected tothe hinge of the book supporting plates, means connecting the ad justing plate and'hingedly connected plates to hold the latter in adjusted posit-ion, and 7 said holder comprising a pair of hingedly connected book supporting plates, an end plate an adjustable connection between the end plate and each of the supporting plates plates and one of its ends connected to the end plate and means adjustably connecting said adjusting plate and horizontal arm to 1 permit the book holder to be adjusted as a to permit of pivotal adjustment of the latter, unit.
