Description

A. KRAFT GRAIN HARVESTER ATTACHMENT April 17, 1928.
Filed Oct. 21, 1926 Alttorney Patented Apr. 17, 1928.'
ABRAHAM KRAFT, or FABMINGTON, MINNESOTA.
GRAIN-HARVESTER ATTACHMENT.
Application filed October 21', 1926. Serial No. 143,235.
The presentinvention relates to a novel structure, in the form of an attachment, for use in association with a grain harvester, and the principal object is to provide a device to be employed on the binder decking for saving grain and making straight well compressed bundles.
The usual binder deck is in twospaced sections and the compressing and trip mechanism operates between the adjacent portions of the sections. WVith the present day construction, the short pieces usually fall on the ground during the bundling operation, thus permitting loss of much material and the formation of a comparatively loose or ragged bundle. Y
The purpose of the improvedinvention is L to hold all of the parts of the bundle together in such a manner as to permit them to be properly bundled and tied together, and to absolutely prevent the objectionable wastage referred to. \Viththe improved attachment in place, about seventy-five percent of the otherwise scattered material is saved. g
The specific structural features and advantages of the invention will become more readily apparent from the following description. I
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughoutthe same: I
Fig. 1 is a. perspective view showing the vinvention in place for use on a conventional form of binder deck. 7 t
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the invention per se.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the plane of the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Briefly, the invention comprises a sectional backing member which is hingedlymounted for downward and outward swinging on the discharge end of the deck, the same normally assuming a vertical operative position. Co-operating withone end of said backing member is novel meanswlnch 18 also associated with the customary needle arm,
and this means acts in conjunction with the neeedle arm for moving the backing member to a position to facilitate discharge of the finished bundle at theproper time.
Referring now to the drawings indetail, it will be seen that the respective sections of the backing member are represented by the reference characters 1. Each Section s needle arm 11. a single length of wire of proper gage, and
in the form of an elongated board. These are arranged in end to end spaced relation, the space being located in alinement with the slot existing between'the parts 2 of the bind er decking. The combined length of the two boards is, of course, consistent with the full width of the deck. It will be noticed from Fig. 1v that I have shown one of the packers 3 and the complemental trip 4:, these being parts of the usual'machine. In connection with the trip, I would state that free operaing of the boards. By" directing attention to Fig 3 in particular, it will be seen that a special bracket 7 is attached tothe outer comprises a'pair of small';plates.8 fastened to said board by bolts 9, and spacing sleeves surround the bolts and are interposed between the plates to maintain them in the assembly represented. This bracket serves in a manner to be hereinafter made plain. As before stated, novel means, broadly defined as a timing and operating device, co-operates with the bracketand the usual This device is formed from this is bent into a coil 12 between its ends. One arm 13 is provided by the rearwardly extending end portion and this terminates in a right angular finger which is located between the aforesaid plates as indicated at 14. This makes for a loose yielding connection. The remaining end portion of the wire forms another arm 15 which also tertion ofIthe-same is permitted by the curved end of the right-hand board. i This bracket minates in a right angularly formed finger located for operating contact with the arm 11. The compressor shaft 17 has a short extension soldered or otherwise formed thereon and it is upon this that the coil 12 is rockably mounted.
rom the foregoing, it f is obvious that the wire operating member functions somewhat as a bell crank. In this connection it will be noted that at the proper intervals, the needle arm 11 will move upwardly The inturned end through a limited arc.
beneath the needle 16 ofthe arm 15 bein arm 11, will followt e needle, arm, thus permitting the complemental a m 1 i0 swing downwardly about the fulcrum coil 12. The loose sliding connection of the fin ger 14 in bracket 7 allows a freedownward swingingmovement of the member 1. \Vhen the arm 11 returns to its normal position, it exerts a downward pressure on the finger 16, thus rocking the wire-operating member back to the position shown in Fig. 1.
With this arrangement, it is obvious that the resilient operating device is controlled by the needle arm, and at the proper time, the bundle backing'board is allowed to swing down andpermit discharge of the finished bundle. T he resiliency of the operating device also permits a required movement of the backing member while the bundle is in the making. In other words, if considerable pressureis brought to bear against the board while in a vertical p031 on, the latter is allowed to yield slightly owing to the formation of the arm 13 and the cooperating bracket 7. 1 i i lit is thought that by considering the description in connection with the drawings, a clear understanding of the construction and operation will be-had. Therefore, a more lengthy description is deemed unnecessary:
I claim:
I r 1. In combination, a binder deck, a needle arm, a compressor shaft, a bundle backing member pivotally supported at its center upon the shaft, having one end bearing against said needle arm and the other end slidably connected with said backing member. i I
2. In a structure of the class described, an attachment for the discharge end of a grain binder decking comprising abundle backing member adapted to be, hingedly mounted upon the decking, said member comprising a pair of duplicate boards ofelongated form disposed in end-to end spaced relationand an outwardly and longitudinally bowed connecting strap connected to the adjacent ends of) said board, an operating device for said backing member comprising a single. length of wire rod bent between its ends toprovide an attaching and fulcrum coil, the portions extending fromsaidcoils forming operating arms, said operating arms terminating in right angularly disposed fingers, one finger beingadapted for associationwith a needle arm, and the brackets carried by one of the aforesaid boards, thelremaining finger being connected .With said bracket.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ABRAHAM KRAFT.
