Description

A. J. WILL ET AL BAKE PAN Filed Sent. 5, 1925 Patented Apr. 17, 1928'.
UNITED STATES ANTHONY JOSEPH WILL AND DAVID ALBERT FELDMAN, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND;
PATENT OFFICE.
ASIGNORS TO THE AUGUSTMAAG COMPANY OF BALTIMORE, OF BALTIMORE,
MARYLAND, A CORPORATION OF JVIARYLAND.
BAKE PAN.
Application filed September 3, 1925. Serial No. 54,367.
This invention relates to baking pans and particularly to a construction in which a plurality of rectangular pans are secured together side by side so as to be handled as a unit.
This invention provides certain improvements over the construction shown in, the patent to J E. Leamann, Reissue #123,516, January 21', 1913. As pointed out in said 9 patent the outer sides ofthe end pans of a series receive considerable wear and tear from the tools used for pushing the pans into the oven and drawing them out and said patent discloses the use of plates secured to such outer sides of the end pans to protect the same. 1
The present invention aims to provide an improved arrangement of such reinforcing and protecting plates and improved and simplified means for securing thesame to the sides of the pans without the necessity of having any rivets extend thru the sides of the pans. The advantages of our improved construction will more clearly appear from the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a partthereof, in which draw mgs: V c
Figure 1 is a side View of a blank for one of the protecting and-reinforcing plates to be secured to the outer sides of the end pans;
Figure 2 is a similar view of such a plate with certain of itsedges partially bentover; Figure 3 is a perspective View partially broken away showing a pan partially completed with one of the protecting and reinforcing plates in position to be bent against the ends of the pan along with the folded corners of the pan;
Figure 4 is a perspective view partially broken away showing a plurality of connected pans with the outer side of the-end pan having our improved protecting and reinforcing plate attached thereto;
Figure 5 is a vertical section on the line 5-5 of Figure l;
Figure 6 is a similar section showing the protecting and reinforcing plate formed somewhat differently at the bottom thereof; and
Figure 7 is a horizontal section on the line 7-7 of Figure 4.
R err g o the drawings in detail by the reference numerals thereon A indicates the separate pans, each of which'is provided with a bottom 10, side walls 11, and end walls 12, the walls flaring outwardly from the bottom 10. Any desired number of pans may be secured together so as to be handled as a unit. This is preferably accomplished by arranging acomparatively heavy wire or rod 13 around the upper edge of the pans.
this rod being secured to the pans by bending or curling the upper portions of the end walls 12 and the upper portions of the side walls 11 of the end pans down over this rod. To further rigidly secure the pans together, the upper edges of the side walls of adjacent pans are bent to form overlapping flanges 11 which are securely connected as by rivets 11 orin any other suitable man-- at 14. The folds or flaps at the'other cor ners of the pans may ifdesired be bent the same way, as indicatedat- 14. Preferably the material for the pan is so cut that the top of these flaps 'or folds 14 and 14 will lie substantially horizontally and closely adjacent to the rod 13 when the flaps are folded against the body of the pans.
The reinforcing and protecting plate which we employ for the outer side of each end pan is indicated at 15 in the drawings. At its upper corners this plate is provided with inclined edges 15 which are adapted to lie horizontally when the ends of the plate are folded against the ends of the pan as later described. At its lower corners the plate 15 is also provided with inclined edges 15 which in the intermediate stage shown in Fig. 2 are bent to form short hooks or flanges. The lower edge 15 of the plate 15 is also bent back upon itself to form a hook or flange as illustrated in Fig. 2. This latter hook or flange may be flattened to form a flat bead 15 as indicated at the bottom in Fig. 5 or to form a rib 15 as indicated at the bott m in Fig. 6.
The manner of i ipplying the plates 15 to the sides of the pan is illustrated in Fig. 3. \Vith the folds or flaps 14 flattened and exe ding: at right. angles to the ends 12 of the pan, one of the plates 15 is applied to v the pan with the hooked edgcs15 engaging beneath the folds 14: of the pan and with the top edges 15 lying flush with the. top. edges of the folds. The ends of the plate 15 together with the folds or flaps 14 are now bentclosely against the ends 12 of the pans. In this operation the bent or hooked edges 15 of the plate 15 are compressed so 7 preferably cut away or notched as indicated It will be further a 1. in Fire. 1, a
understood that the end plates 15 are preferablyof such idth that the upper edges thereof lie just below the rod or bar 13 while the lower edges thereof are substantially flll$l1 with thebottorn of the pans.
In. a con true ion l k tha Shown a d. described it will be noted that the outer sides of the endpans present a smooth and unobstructed surface and that none of the metal of which the pan is formedis exposed on the outer'sides of the end pans. Such out-er sides as well as the outer corners of the and pen are emp et ly cov d a 1 tected by the plates 15. The result is that all wear and tear on the ends of the pans is taken by the protecting plates loand as a esul h li e of he. ans is P ol nge Fu th -more, the ma er of'se rin the protecting plates, in position is simple and application of such plates to the pans.
, Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters; Patent is:
1. In combination, a rectangular bake-pan,
a reinforcing and protecting plate extending along one side of said pan, said pan having flapsat the corners folded against the ends l of the pan, said plate having a portion at each end folded against the end of the pan, the folded ends of said plate overlying said folded flaps on the pan and each of said ends having one edge folded over an edge. of said flap.
2. In combination, a rectangular bake-pan, a plate extending along one side of said pan, said'pan having V-shaped flaps at two cor- 11ers, said plate having end portions shaped to correspond with'said V-shaped flaps on said pan, each of said end portions on the plate having a hook-shaped edge engaging one edge of'one of said flaps, said flaps and the end portions of said plate being bent intoengagement with the ends of the pan.
3. In combination, a. series of rectangularbake-pans arranged side by side, means for securing the pans togetherwh ereby the series may behand led as a unit, a protecting and reinforcing plate on the outer side of each of the end pansof the series, and means for securing saidplatesin position, said means comprisingflaps at the outer corners of the end pansfandend portions on said plates overlapping said fiaps, said flaps and end portions of the plates being bent against the ends of the pans, and said end portions each having one edge bent to embrace the adjacent edge of said flaps.
-In testimony whereof we hereunto afiix our signatures.
