WRENCH.
I cApplication filed March 29, 1926. Serial No. 98,669.
This invention relates to wrenches and has for its object the productionof a device-of this character which may be used either as. a
' monkey wrench or a pipe wrench as desired.
a This object is attained bythe'mechanlsm illustrated in the accompanying drawing,
For the purposevof illustrating the inven tion, one preferred form thereof is illustrat ed in the drawings; thisform having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of wjhich the in vention consists can be vvariously arranged and organized, and the lnvention 18 not l1m-' ited to the precisearrangement and organr zati'on of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described except as required by claims Of the drawings: V Figure 1 represents an wrench embodying, the principles ofith'e present invention and showing the jaws 7 open in position for use as .a' monkey wrench. v v I Figure 2 represents an elevation of same,
partly in section, and showing the jaws closed. I
Figure 3 represents a sectional detailshowing the auxiliary jaw looked to the fixed jaw in position foruse as a monkey wrench.
Figure4 represents a similar detail showi ing the auxiliary jaw locked to the movable jaw and in position foruse as a pipe wrench, and p I F1gure5 represents a perspective of a por- "tion of the wrench showing: the auxiliary jaw locked to the movable jaw Similar characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures of the draw- In the drawings, is a fixedljawof a wrench, said jaw having a serrated working 7 face 11 and a shank 12 extending therefrom.
A portion 13 ofthe shank 12 is fiat sided and extends through the movable jaw 14.
which is provided with a flat working face 15. I
1 The shank 12 is also provided with another reduced flat faced portion 16 on which is mounted the member 17 held in position x thereon against the shoulder 18 byvmeansof 'a set screw 19,.theend of which is positioned in the recess 20 inthe portion 16. 1 j
Formedint-egral with the. portions lb 16 thereto. I
to the fixed jaw 10 and the 27 are parallel.
is a cylindrical portion 21 extending through a wooden handle22which is retained normally upon I the: cylindrical means of the headed screw 23. i
The flat sided portion 13 of shank 12 ex tends through the rectangular hole 24 in an.-
portion 21 by] I auxiliary jaw 25 having a serratedworkingi face 26,'the serrations of which fit into those ofthe working face 11..
The serrated working face '26 is slightly inclined to the flat worl'zingwface 27 on the .oppositeside of the auxiliary jaw '25;
o Owing to the'flat sidesof the 'omafiiaf if fitting the hole 7 24' theauxiliary j aw 25 may move endwise of this portion '13, but is prevented -from all. other movement relatively The: movable jaw 141mm thread ed I a i a I .28 into which extends ne endof theadjustelevation of a ing screw 29 provided-with amilled turning fiange30, the edge of which is positioned in a @1131, yr s enting any. end, movement of said scre wgg a The opopsite, end of the screw 29 is provided with a cone-shaped portion 32 rev o lubly mounted in a socket 33in, an end face of the member '17.
When the milledflange is actuated to rotate the screw 29 the j aw 14 willbe moved endwise of the portion 13, the directionof movement dependingupon the direction of rotation imparted ,tiosaidi screw.
The fixed jaw 10 is providedin one side face with a groove 34 and asimilar groove 35 is formed in a side face ofthe movable jaw 14, these detents 34,- 35 being positioned opposite each other; i l
The auxiliary jaw 25 has a 37 having. at one end an intu'rned end 38 jaw 10- ,or the movable jaw-141 as desired.
or 'detent 3 1 the auxiliaryjaw 25,1'.s*1ockeol v wh n in this position "the, device may be used,as'an or'dinary monkey wrench. \Vhen the clip 37 is moved about its pivot VVhen this inturned end? 3 8 is in the groove I v 1 working, faces 15,
causing the inturned: endli38 to; engage the "groove35; the serrated working faces 11,
26 will be parallel and the jdevicegmaybe used as a pipe'wrenchl;
Should the.auxiliary jaw 25 l becomei oh i broken or unduly worn it may be replaced by a new jaw by removing all the parts of the wrench from the shank 12.
' This is accomplished by unscrewing the screws 19 and 23 and sliding all the parts endwise off the shank 12.
This makes a very simple and inexpensive construction of wrench which may be used either as a monkey wrench or pipe wrench, making it particularly desirable for home use.
7 Having described my invention, I claim: 1. In a wrench, a handle; two main jaws one immovable relatively to said handle and having its working face inclined and serrated, and the other movable relatively to said fixed jaw and having an unbroken working face always perpendicular to the axis of said. handle; and an auxiliary jaw interposed between and slidable towards and from said main jaws and adapted to be locked to either, said, auxiliary jaw being wedge shaped with an inclined working face serrated and opposed to the serrated face of the fixed jaw.
2. Ina wrench, a handle; a shank secured thereto having formed integral therewith a main jaw with its working face inclined and serrated; another main jaw slidable length-- auxiliary jaw disposed on said shank and slidable lengthwise thereof, said auxiliary jaw having an unbroken working face parallel with the working face of the movable main jaw and another working face serrated and parallel with the inclined working face of the fixed main jaw, the teeth of Y which fit the teeth on said auxiliary jaw when contacting therewith; and means for locking said auxiliary jaw to either main aw.
3. In a wrench, a handle; a shank secured thereto having formed integral therewith a main jaw with its working face inclined and serrated; another main; jaw surrounding said shank and slidable lengthwise thereof and provided with an unbroken working face perpendicular to its path of movement; an auxiliary jaw siiu'roundling said shank and slidable lengthwise thereof, said aux iliary jaw being thicker at its outer end and having oneunbroken working face parallel and opposed to'thc working face of the movable main jaw and an inclined serrated working face parallel to the serrated working face of the fixed jaw, the teeth of said serrated working faces being adapted'to interlock when in contact; and means for locking the auxiliary jaw to either main jaw,
Signed" by me at 746 Qld'SOuth Bldg, Boston, Mass, this 20th day of March; 1926.
