' My invention has relation to improvementsin soot blowers for boilers, and consists in lthe novel features of constructlon morefully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the-claims. T he present invention is of the smgle ele., ment type soot blower, that is, it consists of but a single tube through which the steam passes to the orifices adjacent to the boiler tubes, and', also through which air passes to keep the .tube comparatively cool when the blower is inoperative.
The adaptation of the blower vtube for' containing both a steam and an air circulation'is of the essence of the invention and makes it ossible to dispense with the usual cooling jacket around lthe blower tube. Other objects of the invention are to provide means actuated by the flow of steam l tjo the blower tube for temporarily shutlting off the air circulation; to provide a simple compact construction composed of comparatively few parts; and to provide a device that is durable and will not lreadil get out of order. about the middle thereof is formedl a valve seat 20, 'below which is a spider 21 the hub of'which serves as La guide for stem 22 of valve 23, and above the valve` seat is formed a cylindrical guideway 24 for the upper enlarged end 25 of valve 23. The valve 23 is screwed onto the stem 2 2, which is threaded to provide vertical adjustment, and a -lock nut 26 holds the valve in place. The stem 22 extends. upwardl through' the top wall of casting 14, in w ich there is a stufiing box 27, and has a head 22 on its upper end between which and gland 27 is a coiled spring- 28'jwhch exerts its tension to lift the valve `against its seat.
A standard 29 projects upwardly from frame 11 in spaced relation with standard -10, and al shaft 30 is mounted in bearings 31, 32`fori'ned in said standards respectively. A sheave 33, having a cam 34 projecting 'inwardly from its hub, is mounted loosely on shaft 30 outside of standard 29 and adjacent thereto, and a sheave 35 is keyed to the outer endof said shaft, said sheaves being traversed by operating chains 36 and 37 respectively which are guided by a bifurcated cuide 38 loosely mounted on the outside ci: the hub of sheave 35. A lug 39 projects outwardly from standard 29 below the cam 34, 'said lug being perforated to receiveV a pm 40 bearing 'against the cam 34 at its upper end and 'engaged by the head 22 of the valve stem at its lower end. Obviously, on rotating the sheave 33, the. cam 34 will operate to depress the` pin 40..-and valve stem.

The frame 11 is provided with a 'cage '43 below the standard 10, in which ca e 1s a ball-bearing 44 for the inner end of lower tube 1 which is adapted to be rotated by a gear wheel 45 fixed to the tube adjacent to inwar yprojecting boss of standard 10, and an openinI 51 to receive the inwardly projectingl ug 52 of said standard. The lug 52 serves as a sto for limiting the rotation of gear 45 which as a lug '53 projecting towardlug 52, and as the gear is A casting 14is rotated the lug 53 encounters the lug 52 and arrests rotation of the gear. Components 15 and 17 of the casting 14 are connected byl a chamber 54 throu h which the steam passes to the blower tu e 1l when the valve 23 is open. The. wall of (provided with oppositely disposed threade openings 55, 55, leading into the chamber 54, and laterally Adisposed el- v bows 56,56 are screwed into these openings. A pluralit of lugs 57 project inwardly at t e ben of the elbow to support a ball -valve 58 the seat 59 for which is formed on the cap 60 screwed vinto the top of the elbow.
The ca has a pluralityfof air intake ports 6 1 just elow its top Wall to which is screwed a cover 62 which overhangs the cap to shield the intake ports 61 vi'rom dirt. There is an annular clearance space 63 between the bottom edge .of the cover and the cap to permit free entry of air'into the elbow56 and, of course, chamber -54 and blower closed air will be entering through the air vvalves (which the-elbow assemblies maybe called) and flowing throughthe casting 14 to the blower tube 1, from which it escapes 4intothe boiler through orifices 64 disposed opposite the boiler tubes. This circulation of air not only serves Vas' a ,cooling medium to kee down the temperature of the blower fresh supply of highly heated oxygen.
. When the steam valve 23 is opened preparatory to blowing the boiler tubes, the
steam pressure willinvstantly lift the ball valves 58 against their seats 59v to shut off `ing the steam-valve to admit yall timesv that the steam valve 23 isthe incoming air and also prevent the escape of'steam through the air-valves. The steam then passes into the blower pipe and discharges through orifices 64 against the tubes tov blow the 'soot and ash therefrom.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A soot blower for boilers including. a lhead, a rotatable blower tube, and a steam supply pipe for said tube, said head comprising a suitable standard supported from the wall of the boiler, a valve casing susil pended by said standard and connecting the tube with the supply pipe, an anti-'frictionv bearing for the tube suspended by the standard, a stuiiing-box in the valve casing for` supporting and packing the end'of the tube, and means for actuating the Viblower tube.
'2. A soot blower for boilers comprising a head and a rotatable blower tube having one end mounted in said head, a valve casing forming a part of said head and communieating with the blower tube, a steam sup 'ly pipe' connected to said casing, a steam-valve 1n the casing between the su ply pipe and blower tube, an air-intake va ve for admitting air to the blower tube, said air valve being arranged to be closed by steam a-di mittedby the steam valve, a rotary cam for actuating the steam-valve,arresting devices the blower` tu e', arresting devices pendent means for actuating the rotary camgc and the drive gea-r.
3. A soot blower for boilers comprising a head and a blower tube having one end mounted in said head, a valve casing forming a .part of said head and communicating with the blower tube, a steam supply pipe connected to said casing, a steam-valvein the casing between the supply pipe and blower tube,-an air-intake valvefor admitting air to the blower tube, a protective cover disposed over the air-valve, said cover being spaced from the air-valve to provide a peripheral air intake slot, and means for opensteam to the blower tube, said air valve being arranged to be closed by steam admitted by the steam valve.
4. A soot blower for boilers including a head, a rotatable blower tube, and a steam supply pipe for said tube, said head comprising a suitable standard suspended from the wall of the boiler, a valve casing carried by said standard and connecting the tube with the supply pipe, and .separate means carried by said standardA for actuating the valve and blower tube.
5. A soot blower for boilers including a head, a rotatable blower tube, and a steam supply pipe for said tube, said head comprising a suitable standard suspended from the wall of the boiler, a valve casing carried iso by said standard and connecting the tube with the supply pipe, and operatm meansl for the valve and blower pipe, sai means comprising a shaft mounted in said standl 5 ard, an actuating sheave and pinion fixed sheave and cam loosely mounted on said shaft, said cam being arranged to operate the valve,
