and in which the punchings are automatr' 1 cally disposed of without interfering with the operation of the press. The invention consists principally in a punch press in which a circular series of punches are mounted around the periphery of an axially bored base on which is mounted a die block with an axial bore opening into the bore of said base, the punch operating means being mounted in a head secured to the ram of the press. The invention further consists in the punch press and in the parts and comhinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Mounted on the bolster 1 or bed of a punch press is a base plate 2 having a threaded central opening into which is screwed a hollow block Said block 3 is provided with a plurality of slots 4; in each of which are disposed the parallel spaced arms 5 of a punch holder 6 that is secured to the block 3 as by screws 7. Pivotally mounted on a pin 8 in the lower ends of the arms of each punch holder 6 is a punch 9 whose upper end portion 10 is shaped to cooperate with one of the transverse openings 11 in a die i2 that is mounted on the upper end of said block 3. Mounted in the upper end of each punch holder 6 is a screw 13 that serves as an abutment for the punch therein.
Preferably the die 12 is provided with a removable cap portion 14 secured to the top thereof, as by screws 15. The die 12 has a depending tubular portion 16 fitting in the upper end of the bore of said block 3. The die 12 is hollow, and the depending tubular portion 16 thereof is interiorly threaded. Threaded into said tubular depending portion 16 of the die 12 is the threaded up per end of a tubular die securing member- 17 that has an annular rib 18 thereon that engages the under side of said block 3. Thus by screwing the tubular die securing member 17 tightly into the depending portion 16 of the'die, the die 12 is firmly positioned.
The transverse slots 11 of the die 12 are equal .in number to the punches 9 and shaped to cooperate therewith to punch the proper sized openings in the work, which is shown in the drawings as a conical cage 19 for roller bearings. The die 12 and its cap 14 are conical to conform to the conical interior of the work 19 and the die is provided with circtunferential shoulders 20 between the slots, which shoulders serve to properly position the cage and support it during the punching operation.
The punch operating mechanism is carried by a head 21 that is secured tothe ram 22 of the press. Disposed at the center of said head 21 is a clamp 23 having a conical recess 24 adapted to receive the upper end of a cage 19 and hold it on the die 12. Said clamp 23 has a shank portion 25 extending into a bore 26 provided therefor in the head 21. Said shank 25 has a reduced portion 27 that extends through a bushing 28 mounted in said bore of said head. A spring 29 coiled around the reduced portion 27 of the shank of said clamp engages said bushing 28 and the end of the body portion 25 of said shank. A screw 30 in the end of the shank prevents the clamp from dropping out of the head.
Secured to the under surface of the head 21 as by screws 31 are strips 32 that have inclined inner end portions 33 adapted to engage the upper ends of the punches 9 as the head 21 moves down toward the punches, thus positioning the punches so that they may be actuated to punch the work. Preferably the screws 31 pass through slots 34: in said punch positioning strips 32 so that the positions of said strips may be adjusted.

Threaded into the head 21 with their inner ends projecting into the open interior of said head are screw threaded pins adapted to engage the upper end portions 86 of the punches to force the'puncher; to en'- gage the work and punch openings therein. Preferably said actuating pins 35 are set at an angle and the cooperating portions 36 of the punches are correspondingly beveled. Said punch actuating pins 35 are held by lock nuts 87.
Secured to the ram 22 oi the press and extending through enlarged openings 38 in the holster 1 are rods 39 whose lower ends are secured to a plate 4.0 that is adapted to actuate knockout mechanism as hereinafter described. The block 3 is provided with a plurality of vertical bores l1, one disposed alongside of each punch 9. Mounted in each bore 41 is a knockout pin that has a beveled upper end 43 adapted to cooperate with a beveled portion 1a of a punch 9 to strip said punch from the work and move it T he lower end of each knockout pin 12 is threaded and mountin a threaded opening in an end flange 4Y6 on a tubular members. that is slidable on the die securing tube 17. Nuts as on each pin 42 above and below said flange 46 hold the pin in position. The tubular member l7 that carries the knockout pins is provided with a bottom flange .49 to which are secured, at diametrically OPPOE-Iltfi points, as by nuts 50, rods 51 that extend downwardly. Each rod 51 is provided with projections 52 near the top and bottom. The rods 51 extend through a slot 53 in said knockout plate 40.
As the ram 22 of the press moves upward, the knockout plate engages the upper projections 52 on said rods 51, thus raisu the tubular carrier 47 and the knockout pins. 42; and on the downward stroke of the ram, the knockout plate 40 engages the lower pro jections 52 on said rods, causing the knockout pins to be retracted, out of the way of the punches 9. The rods 51 have recessed Mounted in the recess 5% ol each rod is one turcation 55 of an operating handle 56 that is pivotally secured to a bracket 57 on the bolster as by a pin 58. The rods 51 are secured-to the ends oi the handle 56 by pins 59. Said carrier 47 and said knockout pins 42 may be manually actuated by means of the handle 56.

With the ram 22 and head 21 clear of the die 12, the handle 56 is actuated, causing the knockout pins 4.2 to spread the punches 9 so that the conical blank 19 for a cage may be placed on the die. The ram 22 is then actuated and as it descends, the knockout plate 40 engages the lower projections 52 on the rods 51, withdrawing the knockout pins 42 (it they have not already been manually withdrawn by means or the handle). The clamp 23 engages the upper edge of the work 19 holding it on the die. The punch positioning strips 32 engage the upper edge portions of the punches 9 moving them slightly inward toward the work, in position to be engaged by the actuating pins The punches are then engaged by the pins 85 and caused to punch out the work. The punchings from the work pass into the bore of: the die 12 and drop down through the tubular die holder 17.
Alter the punching operation is completed, the ram 22 moves up again. knockout plate 10 engages the upper projections 52 on the rods51, raising the car rier 47 and knockout pins The pins push the punches outward and then engage the lower edge of the cage 19, to strip it from the die.
The press shown in the drawings is adapted to punch seven. equally spaced holes at one operation. ll other holes are desired, a centering plate 60 may be secured to the die 12 between two of the openings ll therein, as by a screw 61. One oi? the openings 62 of a partly punched cage maybe placed over this centering plate and the operation repeated, to punch additional holes.
The above described punch press has numerous advantages: It simple and easy tooperatc. The punches operate from the outside of the work and the work firmly supported during t e-punching operation. The portions punched out of the work are disposed of without risk of interiterii'ig with the operation of the machine. Obviously numerous changes might be made without departing from the invention and I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction sliowi'i.
hat I claim is:
1. A press comprising a bolster, a hollow block thereon, a hollow die on said block. the interior of said die con'nnuuicating with the interior of said block, said die having transverse openings therethrough, a plurality of elongated punches disposed around the outer periphery of said block and pivotally supported at their lover ends, the upper end of: each punch cooperating with a transverse hole of said die, the upper outer edge portions of said punches being beveled, a, reciprocatable ram head and punch actuating means in said am head, said means being angularly disposed to cooperate with the beveled portions of said punches.
2. A press comprising a bolster, a hollow lock thereon, a hollow die at the top of said block. said die having transverse openings therethrough communicating with the interior thereof, punch supporting members secured around the periphery of said block,v punches having their lower ends pivotally loo mounted in said supports and having their upper ends shaped to cooperate with the transverse holesof said die, a ram, a head secured to said ram, a spring pressed clamp in said head adapted to engage the upper edge of the work to hold it on the die, and punch actuating pins mounted in said head and adapted to force said punches inwardly toward the work.
A press comprising a bolster, ahollow block thereon, a hollow die at the top of said block, said die having transverse openings therethrough communicating with the interior thereof, punch supporting members secured around the periphery of said block, punches having their lower ends pivotally mounted in said supports and having their upper ends shaped to cooperate with the transverse holes of said die, abutment screws for said punches in the upper portions of said punch supporting members, a ram, a head secured to said ram, a spring pressed clamp in said head adapted to engage the upper edge of the work to hold it on the die, and punch actuating pins mounted in said head and adapted to force said punches inwardly toward the work.
4. A press comprising a bolster, a hollow block thereon, a hollow die at the top of said block, said die having transverse openings therethrough communicating with the interior thereof and having shouldered work supporting portions between said openings and below the level of the lower edges thereof, punch supporting members secured around the periphery of said block, punches having their lower ends pivotally mounted in said supports and having their upper ends shaped to cooperate with the transverse holes of said die. a ram, and a head secured to said ram, said head being provided with punch actuating means adapted to force said punches inwardly toward the work.
5. A press comprising a bolster, a hollow block thereon, a hollow die at the top of said block, said die having transverse openings therethrough communicating with the interior thereof and having shouldered work supporting portions between said openings and below the level of the lower edges thereof, punch supporting members secured around the periphery of said block, punches having their lower ends pivotally mounted in said supports and having their upper ends shaped to cooperate with the transverse holes of said die, a ram, a head secured to said ram, said head being provided with punch actuating means adapted to force said punches inwardly toward the work and knockout pins adapted and arranged to project into the spaces between said shouldered portions of said die to strip the work from the die.

A press comprising a bolster, a hollow block thereon, a hollow die at the top of said block, said die having transverse openings therethrough communicating with the inte rior thereof, punch supporting members secured around the periphery of said block, punches having their lower ends pivotally mounted in said supports and having their upper ends shaped to cooperate with the transverse holes of said die, a ram, a head secured to said ram, said head being provided with punch actuating means adapted to force said punches inwardly toward the work, knockout pins for swinging said punches clear of said die to permit work to be placed on said die and for stripping punched work from said die, and means operatively connected with said ram foractuating said knockout pins.
7 A press comprising a bolster, a hollow block thereon, a hollow die at the top of said block, said die having transverse openings therethrough communicating with the interior thereof, punch supporting members cured around the periphery of said block, punches having their lower ends pivot-ally mounted in said supports and having their upper ends shaped to cooperate with the transverse holes of said die, a ram, a head secured to said ram, punch actuating pins mounted in said head and adapted to force said punches inwardly toward the work, knockout pins for swinging said punches clear of said die to permit work to be placed on said die and for stripping punched work from said die, means operatively connected with said ram for actuating said knockout pins and selectively operable manual means for actuating said knockout pins.
8. A press comprising a bolster, a. hollow block thereon, a hollow die at the top of said block, said die having transverse openings therethrough communicating with the interior thereof, punch supporting members secured around the periphery of said block, punches having their lower ends pivotally mounted in said supports and having their upper ends shaped to cooperate with the transverse holes of said die, a ram, a head secured to said ram, a spring pressed clamp in said head adapted to engage the upper edge of the work to hold it on the die, punch actuating pins mounted in said head and adapted to force said punches inwardly toward the work, knockout pins for swinging said punches clear of said die and stripping work from said die, a carrier on which said knockout pins are fixed, rods extending from said carrier and having spaced projections thereon, a plate having a slot in which the portions of said rods between said project-ions are disposed and rods secured to said plate and said ram, whereby when said rain is moved awa from said die, said plate engages one set or said projections to cause said knockout pins to operate and when through, one adjacent to said carrier having an upper said ram moves toward the die, said plate engages said other projections to cause said pins to be moved away from said punches and die.
9. A press comprising a bolster, a hollow block thereon, a hollow die at the top of said block, said die having transverse openings therethrough communicating with the interior thereof, punch supporting members secured around the periphery of said block, punches having their lower ends pivotally mounted in said supports and having their upper ends shaped to Cooperate with the transverse holes of said die, a ram, a head secured to said ram, a spring pressed clamp in said head adapted to engage the upper edge of the work to hold it on the die, punch actuating pins mounted in said head and adapted to force said punches inwardly toward the work, knockout pins "for swinging said punches clear of said die and str pping work from said die, a carrier on wh ch said knockout pins are fixed, rods extending from said carrier and having spaced pro jeetions thereon, a plate having a slot in which the portions of said rods between said projections are disposed, rods secured to said plate and said ram, whereby when said ram is moved away'from said die, said plate engages one set of saidprojections to cause said knockout pins to operate and when said rain movestoward the die, said plate engages said other projections to cause said pins to be moved away from said punches and die and a manually operated handle secured to said carrier rods for actuating said carrier.
10. A punch press comprising a bolster, a hollow block thereon, a hollow die at the top of said block, said die having a tubular 1nteriorly threaded portion disposed in the bore of said block, a tubular member having an annular shoulder abutting against the under side of said block and having a threaded upper end portion fitting in the tubular threaded portion of said die, said die having transverse openings therethrough communieating with the interior thereol', punch supporting members secured around the periphcry of said block, punches having their lower ends pivotally mounted in said supports and having their upper ends shaped to cooperate with the transverse holes of said die, said block having a plurality of bores there- 7 each punch, a tubular carriep slidably mounted on the lower end of said tubular die securing member, flange to which are secured a plurality of knockout pins, each pin extending through one of said bores, said pins being adapted to swing punches away from the work and strip the work from the die. said carrier also havingan annular hottomtlange. rods projecting from said bottom flange and having spaced projections thereon, a knockout actuating plate having a slot whereby it is mounted on said rods between said pro ections, a ram,'rods secured to the ends of said plate and to said ram, a head secured to said ram, a spring presse clamp in said head adapted to engage the upper edge of the work to hold it on the die, and punch actuating pins mounted in said head and adapted to force said punches inwardly toward the work.
11. A punch press comprising a. bolster, a hollow block thereon, a hollow die at the top of said block, said die having a tubular interiorly threaded portion disposed in the bore of said block, a tubular member having an annular shoulder abutting against the under side of Said block and having a threaded upper end portion fitting in the tubular threaded portion of said die, said die having transverse openings therethrough communicating with the interior thereof, punch supporting members secured around the periphery of said block, punches having their lower ends pivotally mounted in said supports and having their upper ends shaped to cooperate with the transverse holes of said die, said block having a plurality of bores therethrough, one adjacent to each punch, a tubular carrier slidably mounted on the lower end of said tubular die securing member. said carrier having an upper flange to which are secured a plurality of knockout pins, each pin extending through one of said bores, said pins being adapted to swing punches away from the work and strip the work from the die, said carrier also having an annular bottom flange, rods projecting from said bottom flange andhaving spaced projections thereon, a knockout actuating plate having a slot whereby it is mounted on said rods between said projections, a rain, rods secured to the ends of said plate and to said ram, a head secured'to said rain, a spring pressed clamp in said head adapted to engage the upper edge of the work to hold it on the die, punch positioning strips secured to the inner side of said head and punch actuating pins mounted in said head and adapted to force said punches inwardly toward the work.
12. A punch press comprising a bolster, a hollow block thereon, a hollow die at the top of said block, a tubular member extending into said hollow block and having an annular shoulder abutting against the under side of said block, said die having transverse openings therethrough communicating with the interior thereof, punch supporting members secured around the periphery of said block, punches having their lower ends pivotally mounted in said supports and having their upper ends shaped to cooperate with the transverse holes of said die, said block having a plurality'of bores therethrough, one adjacent to each punch, a tubular carrier slidably mounted on the lower end of said tubular member, the movement of said carrier on said tubular member being limited by said shoulder, said carrier having an upper flange to which are secured a plurality of knockout pins, each pin extending through one of said bores, said pins being adapted to swing the punches away from the work and strip the work from the die, said carrier having an annular bottom flange, rods projecting from said bottom flange and having spaced projections thereon, a knockout actuating plate having a slot whereby it is mounted on said rods between said projections, a ram, rods secured to the ends of said plate and to said ram, a head secured to said ram, :1 spring pressed clamp in said head adapted to engage the upper edge of the work to hold it on the die, and punch actuat-ing pins mounted in said head and adapted to force said punches inwardly toward the work.
