ADJUSTABLE CANDELABRUM SOCKET.

This invention relates to an improvement in ca-ndelabrum sockets, and more particularly to an adjustable or extensible construction for facilitating the positioning of the screwv shell portion of the socket with reference to the tubular candle sheath or casi-ng.
The tubular fiber casings which provide the ornamental candle-like effect are made in standard lengths. And, where the socket proper is mounted upon a fixed support on the fixture fitting, it is frequentlyimpossible to prevent the end of the tubular casingl from projecting so far beyond the mouth of the screw shell of the socket, due to the varying formsl of bases or cups used at the point where the candle joins the fixture fitting, that it is impossibe to screw the plug of thevlamp into the socket to make proper electrical Contact. It is therefore necessary to trim or cut the tubular casing to make it short enough, and such cutting frequently results in the mutilation and soiling of the casings which are usually made of fiber, thereby not only causing additional labor and expense but also marring the ornamental appearance of the completed installation.
Accordingly, the present invention has primarily in view, simple, practical and reliable means for providing for the relative adjustment of the screw shell contact of the socket structure with reference to the fixture fitting, thereby enabling the screw shell to be raised and lowered at the time of installation to suit standard casings; and also providing a device that may be readilycarried in stock in large quantities because it is susceptible of meeting the wide range of requirements of practically all installations.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a side elevation of a modification.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure l, but taken at right angles thereto.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
A novel and distinctive feature of the present invention resides in providing an eX- tensible and adjustable construction wherein the insulating base member of the socket is formed with an axial extension post to which is adjustably fitted a bracket for connectingwith the fixture fitting, thereby permitting of the longitudinal or axialy adjustment of the socket to adapt the same to varying length of candle sheaths. i
Accordingly, by reference to the accompanying drawings, it will be observed that the invention may be incorporated in various structural forms, certain of which are shown in the accompanying drawings as illustrating practical and commercial embodiments. From Figure it will be seen that thesocket proper designated generally as S, having the usual screw shell contact A for receiving the screw plug of an incandescent lamp,
is carried by a novel insulating base member having the line wire terminals T and T for securing the line wires and completing the circuit in the usual manner to the screw shell contact and the center plug in the well-known manner. Also, as shown, the insulating base member B may be provided with a flange F for supporting the insulating sleeve or cuff C which protects and insulatcs the outside of the screw shell A.
However, the distinctive feature of the base B is that it carries an axial projection or post l which may be of an cross sectional shape and length, but as shown in the drawings is preferably of angular cross section to prevent the relative twisting or rotational movement of the socket, when the post is engaged by clamping means 9 of the support 3, due to the screwing in and out of the lamp plug in the screw shell member A.
As clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings the insulating base member B comprises a solid one-piece insulation-block which is provided with an integral bottom portion having seating surfaces at diametrically opposite sides and a transverse throughslot extending through the said seating surfaces, combined with a metallic support including fixture attaching means at one end and a pair ot spaced arms litting the said seating surfaces at opposite sides of the block7 and a single fastening screw passing through the said through-slot of the insulation-block and engaging the opposite arms the metal support. In the example ot the invention shown, which is a preferred 'form thereof7 the insulation block or base member B has formed integrally' therewith the axial extension or post i Vwhich is in ellect an et+ tended bottom portion oli the block and which is ierced by the through-slot or opening 8 re erred to. The said slot or opening receives a single fastening screw 9 extending through the clamping jaws lO of the metallic support 3. The said clamping jaws lO are held into tight clamping engagement with the seating surfaces at diametrically opposite sides of the said bottom portion or e2;- tension l of the insulation-block and these clamping jaws are formed at the ends oit the spared arms ll which are connected with and carry the fixture attaching or engaging means 12 which is usually a nut eiement tor receiving the nipple portion ot the .fixture litting. Thus the structure provides a strong readily detachable connection between the metallic support 3 and the insulation-block which is of porcelain or'other insulating material, as well as an adjustable construction, in the example of the invention showny by means of which the device can be extended or contracted in length to suit requirements.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention aims to provide an extensible candelabrum socket construction wherein the porcelain member oil the socket is adjustahly engaged by a member that attaches directly to the fixture litting. T his arrangement has the advantage of reducing the cost of manufacture by utilising a minimum amount of metal parts and permits ot the formation ot the insulating member ot the socliet at jthe time ot iriaiiiitzuti'iie with a portion to be engaged by the metal member. Net only is the number ot' parts reduced but the entire structure can be made more rigid and stable owing to the relatively wide engaging area between the metal and porcelain or other insulating parts.
llVithout further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may i be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claim.
I claim Y An adjustable candelabrum device including a socket having an insulating base member formed with an integral extension post of angular cross-section and having a slot, a support having fixture attaching means at one end and a pair o' spaced upstanding arms, and a screw cooperating with the slot in the postior adjustably connecting the latter to the support.
