UNITED s're'ras Parent orrrce.
AUGUSTIN PER-EL; REA, OF MEXICO CETY, MEXICO.
JEWELRY.
Application filed November 28, 1923, Serial No. 677,502, and in Mexico November 28, 1922.
My invention relates to improvements in jewelry, and the same has for its object more particularlyto provide a ring, bracelet, or other article of jewelry with a portion adapted to receive a picture, initial, monogram, or other desired matter, and be normally concealed from view.
Further, said invention has for its object to provid'e an article of jewelry of the character: specified having a panel or portion thereonto receive a picture, or other matter, and a removable cover for said panel which cover is also adaptedto receive or have produced thereonan initial, monogram, coat of arms or other matter.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide an article of jewelry of the character specified having recessed or depressed portion forming a panel to receive a picture, or other desired inscription or ornamentation, anda removable cover for said panel corresponding in outline generally with said recessed portion and provided with means for securing said removable cover in position.
Further, said invention. has for its object to provide an article of jewelry of the character specified havinga recessed or depressed portion forming a concealed panel, and means on said article. of jewelry for removably receiving and retaining a cover plate in position over said panel, which cover plate conforms. to and harmonizes with the general contour of said article and the ornamentation thereof.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To. the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in, the combination, connection. and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my said invention in one form, and embodied in a ring or annulus;
Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof showing the cover plate partly withdrawn to disclose the normally concealed recessed or depressed panel;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. a modified construction;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1, showing the con- 2 showing tudinal edges of str'uction of the means for securing the movable cover plate in position; and
Fig. 5 is an endview, looking in the direction of the arrow, at, Fig. 1.
In said drawings, designates a ring or other annular article of jewelry, which may be of any desired form and design. In the present instance, the same is shown v provided with an enlarged central front portion 11 which tapers inwardly at its oppositesides and merges with the body portion of the ring.
The enlarged central portion-ll of the ring is provided with a transverse recessed portion 12 forming a depressed fiat panel 18, and the" vertical, longitudinal walls 14, M of said recessed portion 12 are provided with longitudinal grooves 15, 1-5.
16 denotes a removable cover plate which may be of any desired material, but is p-ref-. erably made of the same material as the body of ring 10, and conforms in outline to the recessed portion 12. The opposite longisaid cover plate 16: are con:
formed to, and engage with the longitudinal grooves 15 15 to permit of the sliding engagement of said cover plate 16 therewith. The cover plate 16 provided at one end with recess 17 adapted to receive the toe 18 of a spring detent 19 having-its inner end secured within a panel 13 and its free end projecting slightly beyond the end of said panel, to: permit of the actuation of said detent 19 to release the toe 18 of its engagement with the coazer plate 16, when it is desired to. remove the latter.
The cover plate; 16 is provided at its other end with a depending lug or projection 20, adapted to enter a recess 21 in the end of the depressed panel 13 in order to; limit the in ward movement of said cover'plate, and. also serve to position said cover plate to be engaged by said locking device.
In the modification illustrated at Fig, 3, the ring is essentially the same as hereinabove described and as shown at Figs. 1 and 2. In said modification, however, the panel 13 is provided with a shallow receptacle 25 to receive an insert, such as a picture, photograph or other object 26 which is protected by a transparent covering member 27, formed of glass, celluloid or other suitable material, and said insert 26 and transparent covering member 27 are retained in place within said receptacle by a frame 28. The receptacle 25 is of such depth that when the insert 26,
groove in the depressed islidably engaged exposure of said covering 27 and frame 28 are duly positioned therein the outer surface of said frame member 28 will be flush with the surface of the panel 13 to permit of the free movement of the plate 12. i
The operation of the device will be ob Vvious from the foregoing description. I 7
It is to be noted, however, that while I have shown the invention applied to a ring that the same is equally applicable to other forms of jewelry, such, for example, as bracelets, lockets, medallions, etc.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a i
1. An article of the character specified comprising a body portion having a shallow recessed part at the outer side baseforms a panel, a shallow device receiving receptacle'in said panel and flush therewith,-grooves in the sides of said recessed part, said recessed part having a slot in one end, a cover conformed to said recessed part and adapted to lie within the same and slidably engaging the grooves therein to permit of the exposure of said device, said cover having a recess at the inner side thereof; the contiguous surfaces of said cover and said panel closely engaging each other, and the outer surface of said cover being substantially flush with the adjacent portions of the outer surface of said body portion, a
stop arranged on said cover adjacent one end thereof to engage with said slot in said recessed part to limit the inward movement ofsaid cover, and a spring detent arranged on said recessed part to be received within said recess of said cover and to engage the same, whereby to lock said cover to its adjusted position within said recessed part.
2. An article of jewelry comprising a body portion having a shallow recessed part at the outer side thereof extending entirely across the body portion, the base of the recess forming a panel, a shallow device-re ceiving receptacle sunk in said panel flush therewith, grooves in the sides of said recessed part, a cover conforming to said recessed part and adapted to lie within the same with its outer face flush with the outer side of the body portion, said cover being with said grooves-to permit device, said recessed part having a lug receiving recess at one side thereof whose public of and a latch receiving recess at the opposite side, a spring plate latch secured to said recessed part at said opposite side and held normally flush with the face of said panel and overlying said latch receiving recess, a lug on said cover at one side thereof and a latch toe receiving recess in said cover at the opposite side, all being arranged whereby when said cover is in place said lug and said latch will be substantially concealed within the body beneath the cover.
3. An article of jewelry comprising a body of relatively thick material, the top face of which is recessed to provide a fiat surface below the planeof the top of the body and constituting a panel, the side walls of said recess being under-cut to provide grooves, said recess extending from one side of said body to the other, said fiat surface having suitable indicating matter within it, the area of said indicating matter being less than the area of said flat surface, acover having a face of an area equal to that of said fiat surface to overlie and engage with said flat surface and having portions to engage with said grooves, said cover being slid-able across said flat surface to conceal or exhibit said indicating matter accordingly as said cover is in one position or another, said body having a lug receiving recess at one side and a latch receivingrecess at the other side, saidlatch receiving recess consisting of two parts one shallower than the other, said cover having a lugon its underside to enter said lug receiving recess when the cover is in place and having at the other side a latch toe receiving recess to overlie said latch receiving recess, and a leaf spring detent latch secured to said body within the shallow portion of said latch receiving recess and overlying the deep portion thereof, said detent having a toe to enter said latch toe receiving recess in said cover when said cover is closed to retain said cover in the closed position, said cover concealing said lug and latch detent save for a slight projection of the end of said detent to leave a part to be engaged for unlatching purposes substantially as specified.
