UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH STRAND, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO4 KLINCH LA TH CORPO- RATION, r01E' LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
HOLLOW TILE.
Application led December 6, 1926. Serial No. 152,879.
My invention relates to a novel form of hollow tile such as is used in the building industry.
It is an object of this invention to provide a hollow tile which is expressly adapted for use in partitions and inside walls.
It is another object of this invention to provide a hollow tile having side members and end members which are formed of the well known wall or plaster board.
It is another object of this invention to provide a novel means for fastening together the end and side members of my hollow tile. n
It is a further object of this invention to provide a building tile which is economical to manufactureand which is strong, endurable, yet 0f light weight.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be made evident hereinafter.
Referring to the drawing in which I illustrate my invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the hollow tile of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 taken on the line 2-2 l of Fig. 2.
The form of my invention shown in the drawing comprises side members 11 and end members 12. These-side and end members 11 and 12 are made ofthe common type of wall board which consists of outer layers of p paper 13 interposed byv a central thickness of plaster 1/1. The side members 11 are placed parallel to each other and so that a space 16 separates them. Stops in the form s of staples 17 are driven into the side members 11 from inner faces 18 thereof. These staples 17 are positioned near the edgesv of the side members 11 and rest in planes which are parallel to the edges of the members 11. rIhese stops or staples 17 project perpendicularly from the faces 18 of the side members 11. The end members 12 are of the same width as the space 16 and are placed against the stops 17 so that the sides "19 of the end members 12 engage the inner faces 18 of the side members 11. Channels 21 are formed at the edges of the side members 11 at the outside of the end members 12.
Tie members in the form of staples 22 are driven into the side members 11 from the the tie members 22 'do not extend perpenpoint where the tie members 22 enter the v side members 11.
The channels 21 kare filled' with bond 26,
'preferably in the form of plaster. This plaster' fills in around the tie members 22 and enters key slots 27 which are formed in the outer-faces of the end members 12. After the plaster bonds 26 have hardened, the hollow tile is ready for use. The side members 11 may be provided with key slots 28 in the outer faces thereof to provide a tie for the plaster coating which is applied thereto when the hollow tile is used in a wall or partition.
The hollow tile of my invention is strong and durablevwhile being light in weight, and it is satisfactory and economiealto use. The side and end members are sized from slabs 'of wall board and are assembled, being temporarily fastened together by the stops 17 and the tie members 22. The plaster bonds 26 are then poured into the channels 21. The bond, after it has hardened, ties the side and end members tenaciously together and a strong tile results therefrom. The tie members constitute a very simple exedient for cooperating with the plaster boards to fasten the side members 11 rigidly together.
I claim as my invention:
1.A hollow tile comprising: a pair of y spaced si'de members; stop members secured to adjacent faces of said side members near the edges thereof; end members extending between said side members and 4engaging said stop members, there being channels formed at the ends of said side members; and means in said channels for fastening said side members and said end members together.
2. A hollow tile comprising: a( pair of spaced side members; stop members secured to adjacent faces of said side members near the edges thereof; end members extending betweenrsaid'side members and engaging said stop members, there being channels formed at the ends of said side members; tie members carried by said side members, eX- tending into said channels; and bonds in Cil said channels contacting said tie members and the faces of said side and end members defining said channels for fastening said side members and said end members together.
3. A hollow tile comprisino': a. pair of spaced side members; stop members secured to adjacent faces of said side members near the edges thereof; end members extending beween said side members and engaging said stop members, there 'being channels formed at the ends of said side members; tie mems bers carried by said side members, extending into said channels; and plaster bonds in said channels contactingsaid tie members and the faces of said side and end members defining said channels for fastening said side members and said end members together.
4. A hollow tile comprising: a pair of spaced side members; stop members secured to adjacent faces of said side members near the edges thereof; end members extending between said side members and engaging said side stop members, there being channels formed at the ends of said side members; tie members carried by said side members, extending into said channels, said tie members comprising staples so secured to the side members that the inner ends thereof are spaced away from said end members into said channels, but engage said end members substantially where said staples enter said side members; and bonds in said channels contacting said tie members and the faces of said sideand end members defining said channels for fastening said side members and said end. members together.
5. A hollow tile comprising: a pair of spaced side members; stop members secured to adjacent faces of said side members near the edges thereof; end members extending' between said side members and engaging said stop members, there being channels formed at the ends of said sid-e members; tie members carriedv by said side inei'nbers, extending into said channels, said tie inembers comprising staples so securedv to the side members that the inner ends thereof are spaced away from said end members into said channels, but engage said end members substantially where said staples enter said side members; and plaster bonds in said channels contacting said tie members and the faces of said Iside and end members defining said channels forfastening said side members and said end members together.
G. A hollow tiley comprising: a pair of spaced side members formed of wall board; stop members secured to adjacent faces of said sidemembers near the edges thereof; end members formed of wall board extending between said side members and engaging said stop members, there being channels formed at the ends of said side members; and means in said channels for fastening said side members and said end members together.
V7.
