Description
B. IRRGANG. Letter-Block Apparatus.
Patented Aug. 3,1875.
No.I 66,382.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE,
BENJAMIN IRRGANG, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LETTER-BLOCK APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,382, dated August 3, 1875 application filed May 31, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN IRRGANG, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Toy, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to construct an amusing and instructive toy for children and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved toy, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the same.
In the drawing, A A are a series of blocks, of any suitable shape, arranged side by side, and contained within a frame composed of a bottom strip, a, side strips 12 b, and top strip 61, the frame resting at the bottom upon feet 6, which I prefer to make inclined, as shown. Each of the blocks A has a central pin, by which it is pivoted to the upper and lower strips of the frame, and on the outside of each block are arranged a number of the letters of the alphabet, and adjoining each letter a picture and the name of an object to which the letter refers. To the top strip d of the frame is attached a supplementary piece, B, onthe sides of which may be arranged alphabets of different styles or pronunciations, instructions, or a multiplication-table.
Each block A, instead of being in one piece, may be made in sections; or the blocks may be arranged horizontally in the frame, if desired.
The alphabet-blocks thus combined with a frame will afford a source of amusement to children, who can rotate the blocks and examine 131 16 letters and pictures without fear of losing any part of the toy, while instruction can be imparted by causing the child to find upon the rotating blocks a letter or number previously pointed out to it upon the piece B.
I claim as my invention- The within-described toy, consisting of a number of blocks, A, pivoted to a frame, and the piece B, secured to the top of the frame, all substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN IRRGANG. Witnesses:
HUBERT HowsoN, HARRY SMITH.
