JOINT AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME.
Application filed November 28, 1921, Serial No. 518,251.
This invention relates to tension resisting joints in flat metallic box strapping, and particularly to a reinforced joint made by forming interlocking conjoint deformations simultaneously in two overlapped box strap ends and a reinforcing member.
It is an object of the invention to provide a joint of the character described, simple and etiicient in construction and economical to make. Among the advantages of the present invention is the fact that no special sleeve element is necessary.

1n the drawings are shown a pair of overlapped box strap ends 1 and -2, in the position they would assume it they were the ends of a binder applied under tension about a box or package. The joint 3 (of which two are shown) is provided for the purpose of securing these ends together. It will be recognized as of the same type as the joint of the Flora Patent No. 1252,680, January 8, 1918, formed by deforming the straps edgewise or out of their normal cross sec tional shapes to roduce tension resisting conjoint interlocking deformations therein. Such a joint for most eliicient action requires reinforcement, heretofore in the form of a 40 special reinforcing girth or sleeve. This reinforcement I provide, not by the use of a separate sleeve as heretofore employed, but by doubling back the top strap end upon itself, as shown at 4, and by thereafter forming the conjoint interlocking deformations in three strap thicknesses simultaneously.
The result of this method is the pro uction of a reinforced joint ca able of withstanding heavy tension in w ich the rein forcement does not require the manufacture or manipulation of a special sleeve element. Furthermore the reinforcement is automatically graduated in accordance with the duty Renewed August 12, 1927.
imposedupon the joint. Thus to withstand the strains imposed upon binders used for an heavy boxes, bales, ete., heavy strap is used; while for lighter boxes it is customary to use lighter strap. In the joint of this invention the reinforcement will automatically correspond to the thicknessof the strap.
Since the operation of crimping the strap is performed with hand tools, it is of advantage that the reinforcement he graduated to the thickness of the strap. This method obtains therefore the advantage of a heavy reinforcing element where heavy reinforcement is necessary and a lighter reinforcement where light reinforcement is sufiicient, without making it necessary to manufacture separate reinforcing girths and at the same time eliminates the expense or time involved in the assembly of stra ends in such girths, or the manipulation o the girths.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. The method of formin a reinforced joint in a flat tensional bin er which con sists in overlapping the ends of the binder, bending back one end on' the overlap to rovide three thicknesses of material and 1: en performing conjoint joint forming operations on said three thicknesses.
2. The method of forming a reinforced joint in a tensional binder which consists in overlapping the ends of the binders, bending back one end on the overlap to provide three thicknesses of material and then forming, simultaneously, interlocked deformations in said three thicknesses.
3. The method of forming a reinforced joint ina tensional binder which consists in overlapping the ends of the binders, bending bac one end on the overla to provide three thicknessesof material an then forming marginal deformations simultaneously in-the three thicknesses of metal. 5
4. The method of forming a reinforced 'oint in a tensional binder which consists 1n overlapping the ends of the binders, bending back one end on the overlap to provide three thicknesses of material and then distorting the cross sectional shape of the three thicknesses of metal by forming conjoint interlocked edgewise crimps therein.
5. The method of forming a tension resisting joint in box binders or the like, which 105 consists in compounding two overlapped ends of said binders, with a short length of binder material integral with one of the ends, into a tension resisting joint, all portions of which extend longitudinally of the binder.
6. The method of forming a reinforced joint in tensional binders which consists in overlapping the ends of the binders, bending back one end on the overlap to rovide three thicknesses of material, and t en deforming said three thicknesses in a manner to lock said thicknesses together against separation in a direction at right angles to the face of the binders, and thereby sealing the joint.
7. The method of making a tension resisting joint in flat tensional box strapping which consists in overlapping two ends of said box strapping, applying another layer of the same material integral with one of the ends, and performing lateral crimping operations on the triple thicknesses of material thus provided.
8. A joint formed by the simultaneous deformation of two overlapped fiat metallic tensional binder ends, and a portion of one of said binder ends doubled back upon the two thicknesses involved in the overlap,'the interlock between said binder ends being effected solely between edges extending substantially longitudinally of the binder.
9. A joint formed by the simultaneous deformation of three thicknesses of a Hat metallic tensional binder com rising two binder ends superposed, and a t ird strip of substantially the same width integral with one end added thereto for reinforcin purposes, all portions of said two binder en s and said third strip extending longitudinally of said binder.
10. A joint for box strapping. or the like, comprising in combination a pair of superposed and overlapped box strap ends, a third strip of material integral with one end of substantially the same thickness a plied thereon, and conjoint interlocking de ormations formed simultaneously in said three thicknesses.
11. The method of forming a reinforced joint in a fiat tensional binder which consists in overlapping two ends of the binder, bending back one end on the overlap to provide three thicknesses of material, and then performing conjoint joint forming operations on the said three thicknesses, the bent back end being folded about the other two thicknesses.
l2. l he method of forming a tension resisting joint in box binders which consists in overlapping two ends of the binder, ap plying another layer integral with one end of said binder, and performing joint forming operations on the three thicknesses of material, the last mentioned layer being crimped about the other two layers.
13. A joint for box strapping comprising a pair of superposed and overlapped box strap ends, a third strip of material integral with one of the ends applied thereto, and conjoint interlocking deformations formed in the three thicknesses, the third strip being crimped about the other two thicknesses.
14. A joint for box strapping comprising a pair of super osed and overlapping box strap ends, a t ird strip of material integral with one of the ends applied thereto and a plurality of conjoint interlocking deformations formed in the three thicknesses.
15. A joint for box strapping comprising a pair of superposed and overlapping box strap ends, a third strip of material integral with one of the ends applied thereto and a plurality of conjoint interlocking deformations formed in the three thicknesses, said deformations being longitudinally spaced apart from one another.

The method of forming a reinforced joint in tensional binders which consists in overlap ing the ends of the binders, bending bacl: one end on the overlap to rovide three thicknesses of material, and t en deforming said three thicknesses in a manner to lock said thicknesses together against separation in a direction at right angles to the face of the binders, and thereby sealin the joint.
The method of making a tension resisting joint in flat tensional box strapping which consists in overlapping two ends of said box strapping, applying another layer of the same material integral with one of the ends, and performing lateral crimping operations on the triple thicknesses of material thus provided.
8. A joint formed by the simultaneous deformation of two overlapped fiat metallic tensional binder ends, and a portion of one of said binder ends doubled back upon the two thicknesses involved in the overlap,'the interlock between said binder ends being effected solely between edges extending substantially longitudinally of the binder.
9. A joint formed by the simultaneous deformation of three thicknesses of a fiat metallic tensional binder com rising two binder ends superposed, and a t ird strip of substantially the same width integral with one end added thereto for reinforcin purposes, all portions of said two binder en s and said third strip extending longitudinally of said binder.
10. A joint for box strapping" or the like, comprising in combination a pair of superposed and overla ped box strap ends, a third strip of materia integral with one end of substantially the same thickness a plied thereon, and conjoint interlocking de ormations formed simultaneously in said three thicknesses.
11. The method of forming a reinforced joint in a fiat tensional binder which consists in overlapping two ends of the binder, bending back one end on the overlap to rovide three thicknesses of material, and t en performing conjoint joint forming operations on the said three thicknesses, the bent back end being folded about the other two thicknesses.
12. The method of forming a tension resisting joint in box binders which consists in overlapping two ends of the binder, applying another layer integral with one end of said binder, and perforlnin joint forming operations on the three t icknesses of material, the last mentioned layer being crimped about the other two layers.
13. A joint for box strapping comprising a pair of superposed and overlapped box strap ends, a third strip of material integral with one of the ends applied thereto, and conjoint interlocking deformations formed in the three thicknesses, the third strip being crimped about the other two thicknesses.
14. A joint for box strapping comprising a pair of superposed and overlapping box strap ends, a third strip of material integral with one of the ends applied thereto and a plurality of conjoint interlocking deformations formed in the three thicknesses.
15. A joint for box strapping comprising a pair of superposed and overlapping box strap ends, a third strip of material integral with one of the ends applied thereto and a plurality of conjoint interlocking deformations formed in the three thicknesses, said deformations being longitudinally spaced apart from one another.
