A. J. TOZER BOLT FOR USE IN CONJUNCTION WITH EXISTING DOOR LOCKS Filed June 1 1 in the lock.
Patented Mar. 6, 1928.
ALFRED JAMES TOZER, OF WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND.
BOLT FOR USE IN CONJUNCTION WITH EXISTING DOOR LOCKS.
Application filed June 1a, 1925, Serial No This invention relates to bolts employed for securing doors and the like in closed positions, and used in conjunction withcy- .indrical, or barrel locks, through the 0 eration of which said bolts are shot into t eir sockets, and are withdrawn therefrom, to lock or to unlock, respectively the doors or the like.
The type of look at present used with cylindrical or barrel locks is unsatisfactory, in that in many cases it is possible by inserting a knife or other tool between the door and the jamb, or through the latter, to engage the bevelled portion of the bolt in such'a way, that said bolt can be forced against the action of its spring, to clear the socket, and so unlock the door.
, The main object of the present invention is to provide a bolt which will give a greater degree of security and safety than the type above mentioned, otherlob'jects being to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive form of bolt capable of being adjusted for use in any of a plurality of positions, said bolt also being provided with means for locking the door fr persons not in possession ofa key fitting the lock of the door, while the lock is at all times capable of being operated by persons inkpossession of theright key. According to the invention a pair of bolt members are slidable horizontally in a casing adapted to be secured to the inside of a door, the lower of said bolt members being provided with a' toothed portion or rack for meshing with a pinion in which the end of thebperating bar or met from the lock is engaged, so that upon said lock being operated by turning a key. therein the pinion is given turning movement and either shoots the lower bolt member into its socket or withdraws it from the latter. a
The upper bolt member is provided with a handle by means of whic it may. be operated independently of the lower bolt member, either to lock or to unlock or so as to be operated in conjunction with the lower bolt member when a key is used In the accompanying drawing, in conjunction with which the invention will be further described. 7 i a Fi ure 1 is a part sectional plan View showing a lock and a bolt fitted to a door,
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the bolt and its casing,

Figure 3 and easing withportion of the back plate of the latter removed,
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view of the bolt members taken on the line A-A, Figure 3, while,
Figure 5 is an elevation of the hand operating means providedwith the upper bolt member. a
A pair of bolt-members 1- and 2 are slidable horizontally in a casing 3 adapted to be secured by screws 3 or the like to the inside of a door 5 at right angles to the axis of the cylinder or barrel lock 4 inserted in the doorv5, thelower of said bolt is a rear elevation of the bolt members 1 and 2 being toothed or provided on its underside with a rack 6 with which meshes a toothed wheel or pinion 7 mounted in the casing 23, so that on turning move ment being imparted to said toothed wheel or pinion 7 thelower bolt member 2 can be projected from the casing 3 and be engaged in a socket 9 in or on the door jamb 10 or be withdrawn from said socket 9, as may be required.
The toothed wheel orpinion 7 contains a cross slot or recess the operating bar or rod 11 from the barrel or cylinder of the lock 4 is entered, so that upon a key which fits said lock 4: being inserted therein turning movement can be imparted through said bar or rod 11 to the toothed wheel or pinion 7 to cause the bolt member 2 to enter, or be withdrawn from the socket 9 on or in the door jamb 10 as aforesaid.
The other or upper of said bolt members 1 and 2 is slidable on the toothed bolt memher 2 either by hand and independently of the-latter, or with same, under the action of turning the key inserted in and fitting the lock 4.
The upper bolt member 1 contains a recess or cross slot 12 in its .under side, and the lower or toothed-bolt member 2 hasa pair of directly opposite cross recesses or slots 13 in its upper side, each of said last mentioned cross recesses or slots 13 extending from near the centre of the top of the bolt member 2 and opening through a side of the latter, said slots or recesses 13 deepening to- 22 into which the end of wards the sides of the bolt member 2 wherei by there is provided between said slots or recesses 13 a ridged port-ion let on which an arm or member 15 is entered in the cross slot or recess 12 in the upper bolt member 1,
said arm or member 15 being provided with a projection 16 which is entered in a recess 17 in the upper bolt member 1 to prevent said arm or member '15 from being withdrawn from the latter. The arm or member 15 mentioned is tapered at 15 at its inner end to permit it to be rocked.
When the cross slot or recess 12 in the upper bolt member 1 registers with the cross slot or recess 13 in the lower bolt member 2, the arm or member 15 entered in the upper bolt member 1 also enters the cross slots or recesses 13 in the lower bolt member 2 and locks the two bolt members 1 and 2 together whereupon said bolt members 1 and 2 may be slid together in either direction either by inserting a key in the look at and imparting turning movement to the toothed wheel or pinion 7 as aforesaid, or by moving said arm or member 15, the latter extending through a slot 18 in the front of the casing 3 and being provided with a knob or handle 19 to facilitate its being gripped and operated by hand.
\Vhen it is desired to use the upper bolt member 1 only, such as for instance, when it is desired to lock the door 5 from the inside and without using a key, the arm or member 15 entered in the upper bolt member 1 is lifted from engagement with the slots or recesses 13 in the lower or toothed bolt member 2, whereupon said upper bolt member 1 may he slid into engagement with the socket 9 in or on the door jamb 10. To unlock the door 5 when the latter is locked by the upper bolt member 1 the latter can either he slid by hand until it clears the socket t), or the lower or toothed bolt member 2 may be operated from the outside of the door 5 by means of the key to cause it to move until the slots or recesses 12 and 13 in the boltmembers 1 and 2 register with each other, whereupon the arm or member 15 in the upper bolt member 1 will drop and lock the two bolt members together, after which the latter can be moved or slid together out of engagement with the socket 9 by turning movement of the key.
The bolt members 1 and 2 are slidable in the using 3 between upper and lower guides 20 and also between the slotted front of the casing 3, and a removable plate 21 dovetailed in the back of the latter.
The toothed wheel or pinion 7 is removably held in a. cylindrical housing 7 provided in the casing, said housing being open at one side to allow the teeth of the wheel or pinion 7 to mesh with the teeth of the bolt member 2.
The casing 3 is made with upper and lower housings T for the toothed wheel or pinion 7 in order that either the top or bottom of the casing 3 may be used uppermost, the bolt members 1 and 2 being reversed top side for bottom side in the casing, so that the bolt member 1 is always on top. Also the bolt members 1 and 2 may be reversed end to end,
in the casing 3, to suit right and left handed doors.
The lower or toothed bolt member 2 is prevented t'rom being slid out of the casing 35 by having its teeth 6 formed flush with its under side, while the upper bolt member 1 is prevented from leaving the casing 3 by the arm or member 15 projecting through and working in the slot 18 in the casing 3.
The bolt members 1 and 2 are made of such a length that they will enter more than the usual distance into the socket 9 and when operating said members by means of the key several turns of the latter are required to shoot the bolt member or members fully home into the socket 9 and to withdraw same from the latter.
By this means additional security is obtained, and there being no bevelled portions on the members 1 and 2 the latter cannot be disengaged from the socket 9. in the manner earlier mentioned.
What I do claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent of the United States of America 1s 1.
