An object of the present invention is to provide improved clamping `mechanism adopted for use in an organization of the type referred to, which mechanism will be $5 smootherand more `definite in its operation. A clamping member' 40 is pivotally m0ui1ted at 42 .on the jack frame 30; This member 40 has a screw y44 mounted in its end, over the clamping member 36. In accordanceuwith a feature of the present invention the upper surface of lthe member 36 is provided with a-'number of. seats 48,
formed as holesor drill/spots', arrangedv along the length of the member 36, so that any longitudinaladjustment will bringone of these Seats nearly under the screw 44. The screw 44 is threaded into atrunnion piece 50, which is horizont-ally pivoted in the member 40'and the other in the middle part of a lever 56 terminally pivoted at 58 on the member 40 and having a cam roll 60 at its other end engaging a cam 62 on a cam lever 64 pivoted at 66 on the jack frame 30.
In the drawing the jack is shown in blank-clamping position. To release the blank the operator will raise the handle 68 causing the cam 62 to run from under the roll 60. This will release the members 56. 40 completely so that they can swing around the pivot 42 releasing the member 36, when the blank can be removed and a new one inserted. The members 36, 40, the pivots 88, 42, 50 and the depression 48 constitute a linkage which changes its form as the member 36 is forced down on the heel blank 39. The pivot at 50 prevents any tendency of the end of the screw 44 to scrape over the top of the member 36 as this change inl form takes place and avoids any danger of breaking or damaging the screw or the member 36. The jack as a whole is tilted `around the pivot 28 by the adjustable socalled upper track 70. as will be well understood by those familiar with the art.
The mechanism for compensating for minor variations in work thickness, exemplified by the resilient compound lever 40, 56, is the invention of Norton W. Kinney and is not claimed herein.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a wood heel turning machine, a jack having a clamping face arranged to receive the heel-seat surface of a heel blank, a clamping member arranged to engage the toplift surface of the blank, a second clamping member arranged to force the first-named clamping member toward the clamping face, and a screw trunnioned in the second clamping member and engaging the first-named clamping member.
2. In a wood heel turning machine, a jack having a clamping face arranged to' receive the heel-seat surface of a heel blank, a pivotally mounted clamping member arranged to engage the toplift surface of the blank. a pivotally mounted second clamping member arranged to force the first-- named clamping member toward the clamping face, and a screw in the second clamping member and engaging the first-named clamping member, said screw being trunnioned in the second clamping member to take up the relative movement between the two said clamping members on their pivots.
3. In a wood heel turning machine, a jack having a clamping face arranged to receive the heel-seat surface of a heel blank, a clamping member arranged to engage the toplift surface of the blank, said clamping member being adjustable longitudinally of the heel blank, a clamping lever arranged to force the clamping member toward the clamping face, and a screw trunnioned in the clamping lever and engaging the clamping member.
4. In a wood heel turning machine, a jack having a clamping face arranged to receive the heel-seat surface of a heel blank, a pivotally mounted clamping member arranged to engage the toplift surface of the blank, said clamping member being adjustable longitudinally of the heel blank, a clamping lever arranged to force the clamping member toward the clamping face, a screw trun nioned in the clamping lever and engaging the clamping member. and means for operating the clamping lever.
5. In a wood heel turning machine, a jack having a clamping face arranged to receive the heel-seat surface of a heel blank, a clamping member arranged to engage the toplift surface of the blank, a clamping lever arranged to force the clamping member toward the clamping face, a threaded nut trunnioned in the clamping lever, and a screw in the nut engaging the clamping member. said clamping member having a hole in its surface to receive the end ofthe screw.
6. In a wood heel turning machine. a jack having a clamping face arranged to receive the heel-seat surface of a heel blank, a pivotally mounted clamping member arranged to engage the toplift Surface of the blank, a clamping lever arranged to force the clamping member toward the clamping face, a screw trunnioned in the clamping lever and engaging the clamping member. said second-named clamping member having a seat in its surface to receive the end of the screw, a earn roll on the clamping lever. and a earn lever arranged to co-onerate with the roll to move the clamping lever.
7. In a Wood heel turning machine. a jack having a clamping face arranged to receive the heel-seat surface of a heel blank. a clamping member arranged to engage the top-lift surface of the blank. said clamping member being adjustable longitudinally of the heel blank, a clamping lever arranged to force the clamping member toward the clamping face, and a screw trunnioned on a horizontal axis in the clamping lever and engaging the clamping mem ber. Said clamping member having a plu rality of seats in its surface so arranged that one of them will receive the end of the screw. in any adjustment of the clamping 12 member. by virtue of the trunnion mount ing of the screw.
8.
