This invention relates to devices for operating window shades where the shade is not provided with a spring roller and the general object of. the invention is to provide a very simple, readily applied andeffective device of this character by wlnch a window shade may be raisedto any height desired and held in this raised position and without the use or cords or like co'ntrivances.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Fi 1 is a face view of a window with'm shade operating device applied thereto;

Fig. 6 is a section on the line6'6 of F 2. I v i eferring to these drawings, 10 designates one side section of an elongated metallic casing and 11 the opposed side section. The section 10 has an inclined wall 12 at one end and a side wall 13 extending around nearly the remainder of the section. Disposed adj acent one end of this wall but inward thereof is a relatively short wall or flange 14:; The section 11 is adapted to fit within the peripheral wall of'the section '10. The section 10 is formed with a series of sleeves or collars 15 which act as spacing sleeves holding the section 11 in spaced relation to the section 10. rality of screws 16 projecting therefrom adapted to pass through the collars l5 and headed at their extremities so as to hold the section 11 upon the section 15 and form a case. Any other suitable means for forming this case may be used.
Adjacent the end of the case remote from the inclined wall 12 there are formed the apertures 17 in sections 11 and 10. The gudgeon 18 is rotatably mounted in these apertures and has a many sided portion 19 projecting beyond the outer face of the case and adapted to be engaged with a window shade roller. The gudgeon carries upon it the gear wheel 20. Mounted upon the sleeve 15 which is remote from the gudgeon 18 is a segment gear 21 having an arm 22 projecting out tangentially therefrom. This segment gear engages with a gear 23 winch forms one or a train of gears whereby osciltra'in of gears areall numbered 23.

By tighten ing up upon these screws, the two sides of the case may be forced toward each other to a greater or less extent and thus the frictional engagement with thearm 22 maybe increased or decreased. Obviously the gudgeon as shown in Fig. 6, will be used in connection with a cap 26 on the end of the shade roller havin an oblon o enin or socket therein into which the gud'geon may pass,
, (see Fig. 3.) but on the other hand, it is obvious that'the gudgeon or shaft 18 may be formed-with a socket to receive agudgeon upon the extremity of the shade roller.

An operating device for window shades comprising a casing consisting of two parv allel members, one of said members having spacing sleeves a train of multiplying gears of the train having a shaft extending through said casing and formed for rotative engagement with a window shade.

An operating device forwindow shades comprising a casing consisting of two parallel members, oneof said members having 1 spacing sleeves, a train of multiplying gears mounted upon the spacing sleeves, and intermeshing with each other, the first gear of the train being formed with a segment gear and having a tangentially extending arm, a
link pivoted to said arm whereby the segment gear may be operated, the last gear of :mounted upon the sleeves and intermeshing with each other, the first gear of the train beingformed with a tangentially extending arm, the casing having a longitudinally extending stop inward of its front edge against whichsaid arm will bear when the arm is in a vertical, upwardly extending position, and a straight link pivoted to the outer end. of said arm and extending parallel to the arm and the casing when the arm is in its retracted, upwardly extending po-' sition, said link constituting means Where by the arm and the train of gearsmay be operated, the last gear of the train having a shaft extending through said casing and formed for rotative engagement with the window shade.
