BED OR ATTACHMENT THEREFOR.
Original application leg October 3, 1923, Serial No. 666,254. Divided and this application filed August 4, '1925.
This application is a division of my former application Serial No. 666,254-, led Qctober 3, 1923 and the drawings of this application illustrate much shown and fully explained in the original application but not described herein, which is no part of Jche present 1nvention.
The invent-ion relates to beds or attachments therefor, the objects being to provide means for securing said attachments to bedsteads or other suitable supporting structures, and such other objects as may hereinafter appear; and consists, preferably in the construction hereinafter described.
` In 'the drawings, Figure l is a plan vieiv of a bed VWith present invention shown in connection therewith, the lengthwise central portion broken out to reduce the Width and parts broken aivay to better show a portion of the operating mechanism; Fig. 2 is aside elevation of Fig. l, With parts broken aivay to better show portions of the operating mechanism; Fig. 3 is a sectional view, of F19'. l on line 3-3, showing angle bars as side rails of a bedstead and illustrating' means for securing the attachment to said rails; Fig. 4c is a plan view of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a modilication of Fig. 8, showing a section of a tubular bed rail and means for securing the attachment thereto, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of Fig. 4. v
In the drawings` similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views, and, referring to the same, 1 and 2 denotes the head and foot respectively and 3 the 4side rails of a bedstead, and supported thereby is a self-contained inde pendent apparatus of which the 'trame t, `prefeiably of angle bars, forms a supporting base, the longitudinally extending Vsides thereof being adapted substantially to overn4 lie the side rails of a bcdstead, or other suitable supporting structure.`
In the present case, the frame l carries an adjustable sectional frame consisting oit a rigidly secured central section 5, body and thigh sections 8 and to the respective ends ofthe central section, a leg section ll pivotally attached to the free Vend of the thigh section and means for ad SSC- justing the several pivotally attached tions. 1 g
It is frequently the` case, that the connections `betvvfeen the side rails and the head and foot of a bedstead are higher than the 9 pivotall'y` attached Serial No. 48,122.
side rails and to avoid the same, or other variations, plates 6l, 62 and 62 of sutlicient thickness to compensate for this unevenness are secured, preferably, to the bottom of the ase frame It in any suitable manner, as by rivets 63. The plates 6l extend inwardly from the base frame and secured to their underside are spacersilt (see Fig. 3) of a thiol@ ness to conform With the inwardly extending angle of the side rails of a bedstead. Be` neath these plates are adjustable plates 65 with elongated holes66. between the bed rails diders the attachment is placed upon them in position to equalize their difference and plates 65 are adjusted so one end will rest against the inner-side of the vertical angle of the bed rail and clamped, asby bolts 6T, thus securing the attachment centrally and iirinly upon the bedstead.
Fig. 5 is a modification of Fig. 3, in which the attachment may be secured to bedsteads with tubular side rails 3. In this modification, plates 6l are similar and secured to the base frame in the same manner as in Fig. 3, but supports 68 rest upon and it a tubular or other. forms of side rail, and clamps 69 areintended to lit the lower side of said rails, both being provided with elongated holes 66 for adjustment to meet the variation of spacing between points of attachment and areclamped thereto, as by bolts 67. It is understood, of course, that the `number of said plates, supports and clamps may be varied, their forms changed, and that they may be diiferently placed and secured to meet variations in spacing, forms and positions of the bed rails, or other points` of attachment, the intention being to provide for securing a standardized base frame,
adaptable to different makes of bedsteads or similar supporting structures, by merely changing the supports and fastenings.
llhile I have shown and described the prefered embodiment of my invention I do not Wish to be limited to the details shown, as it is obvious that changes may readily be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is:
l. In combination, a supporting frame adapted to substantially overlie the side rails of a bed and having longitudinally eXtending side members, cooperating clamping elements disposed in pairs at each side oit said trarne and adapted vto bear against the upper As the distance i Cil and lower sides of the adjacentbedrails, said clamping elements ot each pair having registering laterally extending slots and fasteningr means extending through said slots fort-onnccting the clamping elements to the respective side frame members wherebythe trame `may be secured to a bed the ralls oit Which ing side members, means at oney side of said 'trame for supporting it on the adjacent bed rail, a pair ot cooperating clamping elements disposed at the other side ol' said trame and adapted to bear against the upper and lower sides ofthe adjacent bed rail, and means connectingr said clamping elements to the adjacent side traine member ivhereby the clampingelements ofeach pair are laterally adjustable and may be attached to beds.
