INQ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ACORPORA'I'ION 'OF DELAWARE.
SAVINGS BANK.
' Application filed September 27,1922. Serial No. 590,778.
The present invention relates to a, coin container or safe which is more particularly adapted to be embodied in a construction that is portable and may be made in such 6 size that it may be handily carried in the pocket of a user wherein coins of a given denomination may from time to time be deposited by the user.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a safe in' which the coin shall be visible, but which shall be so arrangedthat in a given size of pocket safe, which size will be convenient to be inserted in the pocket of the user, a maximum number of coins of a given denomination may be inserted.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming apart of the specification, in which Fig. 1 is a perspec- 2 tiveview showing a construction of safe embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the showing in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional el e vation of the showing in Fig". 1; Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a portion of the ocket safe construction; Fig. 5 is an elevation of the end in which coins may be inserted.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a body portion which may be made up in any desired manner, but will consist of a top face 2, a bottom face 3, and side portions 4 and 5. This body portion may be made up out of a single piece of metal, or it may be made up of a plurality of pieces of metal. In whatwe will term the top surface 2 there will preferably be provided a plurality of slots 6 which extend longitudinally, and there will be as many slots as there will be rows of coins, all of which will be later explained. On the reverse side or upon the face 3 of the safe .there will be also a plurality of openings, with the opening explained.
(lo-operating with the body 1 is a structureby which the interior of the safe is divided into three compartments, so that there is a partition member which extends longitudinally of the body portion 1, and beneath the thin strip of metal between the adacent opening 6, which body portions may be indicated at A, B and C. These compartments may be formed in a variety of Ways, but in the present construction I have shown 6 which has before been a preferred form which'consiststin providwhich will directly align In the form as shown the tray consists of a member 8 which has two portions 8 and 8 which lie in the same general plane, and arectangular raised'portion which is indicated at 8. The port ons 8 and 8 will slide upon the inside of the side member 3. while the portion 8 will slide upon the inside of the side member 2, and the portion 8 lying between the portions 8 and 8 will cooperate with the central slot '6, and the slot in the member 3 which is directly below it, and the same will be true with respectto the parts 8 and 8*. l
The portion 8 will be formed with a slot 9 while the portions 8 and 8 will also be formed with a slot 10 and 11 respectively, so that when the slide member thus described is assembled with respect to the.
member 1 the various slots which are in alignment will provide a complete view through the bank, and when the coins are inserted in the bank the coins will be visible within the bank when. viewing the same from either the side member 2 or theside. member 3.
It will also be apparent that upon the inserticn of the slide member the chambers A, B and are defined by the upstanding walls which are at the edges of the portions 8, 8 and 8, so that the chambers A and C may be said to be on one side of the safe, while the chamber B is on the other side of the safe.
Secured to the member 8 is a slanting member 12, and a similar member 12' is secured to the member 8", and a third similar member 12 is secured to the member 8, but it slants in a direction at an angle with respect to the members 12 and 12. These members are provided in order to cause coins which are inserted, as will be later explaine'd, to assume a diagonal position within the respective chambers A, B and C.
At the end -of the sliding member there is a head 13 which is secured thereto, and
it is provided with spring members 14 and 15, and there is also a similar spring member 16 on the opposite side which are adapted to be compressed when the sliding memher is inserted within the body portion 1 and then released so that they occupy the slots 17 and 18 invthe side member 2 of the body portion, and the spring member 16 occupies a similar slot. in the side member.
Adjacent each of these springs 14, and 16, there is an opening such as shown at 19 of Fig. 1, through which a suitable tool may be inserted to depress the springs so that the slidable member may be withdrawn from the body member 1.
like detent 22 which co-operates with each 'instances the coins in a of the openings 21 so as to prevent the dropping outof coins which have once been inserted through the slot 21.
The compartments will be formed of a width and depth to accommodate a series of coins of a given denomination. That is to say, the slots may be of a width to accommodate dimes or nickels or any other predetermined coin. The height or depth, as it may be termed, of each compartment, will be such as to permit the overlapping of a plurality of coins when they are ina diagonal position within the compartment. For instance, as shown in Fig. 2, the coin 23 when inserted through the slot 21, will drop'to the bottom of its compartment, and will engage with the member -12 and assume a diagonal position, such as shown, and subsequent coins which are inserted through the slot 21 will pile up in the fashion shown in Fig. 2. Coins may be continually inserted all of which will assume the diagonal position until the compartment is entirely filled. up.
It will be seen that coins'which are inserted in the compartments A and C will occupy relatively similar diagonal positions, while coins that are inserted in the compartment B will occupy an opposite diagonal relation. But in all will occupy diagonal position, and each coin will be overlapping with respectto the coin or coins which are adjacentto it. This feature of construction permits a relatively large number of coins'tobe inserted in a given compartment so that abank of comparatively small dimensions will be able to. accommodate a comparatively large number of coins.
I am aware that there are at present on the market certain pocket savings banks in with respect to a compartment what might .be termed given compartment which the coins which are inserted in a given compartment of the safe touch edge to edge, and therefore the number of coins which may be inserted in such a compartment is relatively small, but in the present construction by having a pocket safe of the same length but a little greater in thickness, it is possible to greatly increase the number of coins which may be inserted within a compartment of the safe.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A savings bank container comprising an outer body portion having an opening at one end and provided with a transverse slot near the open end, a slidable member which is adapted to be inserted within said body portion, a resilient inclined member secured at one end to the base of the slidable memher and provided with a laterally extending lug at the opposite end thereof, a cover member secured to the slidable member and adapted to enclose the open end of the body member, the lug on the resilient inclined member adapted to engage the transverse slot in the body portion and to securely lock said body portion and slidable member to-' gether when in closed position.
