This invention relates to ribbon mechanism tor typewriting machines, and more particularly to machines tor 'riting checks or similar instruments and for making a copy on a continuous rccorthshcct ot' a part of the matter typed on each check ot a series.
In writing a check. it is customary to insert it in the typewriter and type a plurality of lines upon it. The first line consists of the name of the payee and the numerals indicating the amount for which the check is drawn, and the other line or lines include a statement of the amount l or which the check is drawn, spelled out in tall, and possibly other data. It is desirable to keep a condensed record of the checks by copying on a record-sheet the first typewritten line only of each check. With this end in view, there is provided, in addition to the usual ribbon mechanism for writing on the faces of the checks, an auxiliary ribbon behind the checks but in trout ot the record-sheet, and
. mechanism is also provided to move the auxiliary ribbon to and from ctlective position atthe will of the operator. The auxiliary ribbon not only makes the condensed record of the checks. but it also prints upon the racks of the checks, which is advantageous, since an alteration of a check, to escape detection, requires that erasures be made at the same point on the front and back of the check, and this without making a thin spot which would be noticeable when the check is held up to the light.
In accordance with one feature of the invention, provision is made of a manually operable handle arranged to be etlective when moved in one direction to raise the auxiliary ribbon frame and thereby to move the auxiliary ribbon to ineffective position, and to be effective at a single stroke when actuated in the reverse direction, to perform the dual "function of feeding: the auxiliary ribbon and of restoring it to effective posi tion.
It is an important feature that such actuation of the handle causes the ribbon to be first ted while in its ineffective position and to be thereatter moved to its e'ltcctive position. whereby the likelihood oi? smearing the work by such ribbon-feedingis avoided. To this end the ribbon-feeding mechanism is mounted upon the auxiliary ribbon frame to swing as a unit therewith. so that the ribbon Serial No. 690.705.

' The handle and the mechanism operated by it are so arranged that the handle may also be operateiil to teed the ribbon when the ribbon is in its etl'ective position, without moving it from said position. The ribbon may therefore be fed at the beginning of each line in which it is to be used, even though the work is of a character to cause such lines to occur in succession.
A further feature of the invention relates to novel ribbon-reversing mechanism of a very simple and etiicient character. The ribbonspools at the opposite ends of the platen may be driven for feeding the ribbon in opposite directions by ratchet-wheels at tached to them. and these are driven by feedpawls arranged to be reciprocated by a rockshalt that is connected to the ribbon-feeding ha udle and extends trom side to side of the auxiliary r bbon frame. A ribbon-reversing shalt also extends across the auxiliary ribbon :lrame. and has projections or cams arranged to be brought alternatively into iengagement with the 'tced-pawls simply by .movcn'ient ot a reversing handle to rock the reversingshaft, the arrangement being such that the teed-pawl which is engaged by its associated projection on the reversing shaft is rendered inoperative.

The typewriting machine to which the present improvements are applied is provided with the usualmain ribbon 10, which is fed back and forth between spools (not shown) and is threaded through a ribbon-vi brator 11 between a type-guide (not shown) and a platen 1.2 in position to be struck by types 13 l inal-ring impressions on the paper in the machine. The platen 12 is rotatably mounted by means of a platen-axle l l iournaled in a platen-frame 15 in the usual manner. Paper-teed-rolls l6 co-opcrate with the platen for feeding the checks and a record sheet line by line, and may be cast off by means (not stream) of the kind usually provided in Underwood typewriters.
An auxiliary ribbon 17 arranged, to pass between the main ribbon 10 and the platen 12 to print upon the face of the recordsheetand upon the back of the check is carried by spools 18, which, together with ribbon operating and controlling 1113Cl1l11l5111,l10 mounted upon an auxiliary ribbon frame comprising end plates 19 and 20 and a connecting roclrshait journaled in brackets recur-ed to the end 23 of the platen traine.
The auxiliary ribbon 17 extends forward "from each of the spools 18 over a guideroller 24-, through an inclined ribbon-guide slot 25 at the front of the end plate on which the spool is mounted, and thence across the front of the platen through a cor responding guide slot 25 at the opposite side of the machine.
Eachot' the auxiliary ribbon-spools 18 is mounted for rotation about a horizontal shaft 26, supported in a hub cap 27 secured to one of the end plates 19, 20. The spool 18 is retained upon the shaft 26 by a spring nee ribbonspool 18 is removed from the shaft.

The ratchet-- wheel 31 has a hub portion 35 that e::- tends through the end plate on which it inounteth snugly fits within the hub cap 2? for rotation relatively thereto, and forms an extended support for the shaft it screw 36, threaded into an end of the shaft 26, re tains the shaft in position in the hub cap 2'? and also secures in place an elbow-springmember 37 which bears upon a finger 38 that-- extends through the side of the hub cap and rides in a circuiniterential groove 39 of the ratchet-wheel hub 35 to detain the ratchet wheel 31 in place on the shaft 26 when the n ch ot the end plates 19 and 20 is L to a bushingell), and each l'uishing' 10, in turn, is made fast by a pin 41 to the rock-shaft 21. /Vhen the handle ill is raised. from the full line position of l igure 3 to the position of Figure 4:, it acts through the pin and the screw 4? to turn theauniliaiy ribljion frame about the axis of the rock-shat't 21 and thereby to lift the auxiliary ribbon 17 to an ineffective position.
For determining the normal and inel'lective positions of the auxiliary ribbon l? and for detaining it in either ot such position, there may be lifted upon each of the bush ings 40 a hub 48 having a cam nien'iber 49 fast upon it. These cam inen'ibers 4:9 at the opposite ends: of the shaft 21 actin unison,
and each comprises an upper recess and a lower recess 51 with an intervening projection 52 for co-operating with a detent-roll 53 carried by an arm 5% pivoted on one of the brackets 22 and urged toward the cam 49 by a spring 55 connected to the arm 51 and to the bracket 22. The lower recesses 51 co-operate with the detent-rolls 53 to detain the auxiliary ribbon frame yieldingly in its normal position, while the upper recesses 50 co-operate with the detent-rolls to detain the auxiliary ribbon frame in its raised position.
hen it is desired to lower the auxiliary ribbon 17 to its effective position, the handle 13 is depressed from the position shown in Figure 4C. The detent-rolls 53 at first prevent rotation of the auxiliary ribbon frame while the pin 15 travels from the forward end of the slot 46 to the rear end thereof, and it is during this time that the feeding of the auxiliary ribbon 17 is effected, as will be explained presently. After the engagementof the pin is with the rear end of the slot 46, the auxiliary ribbon frame moves in unison with the handle 13 to effective position, the detent-ro1l 53 being forced outward from the recess 50, over the projection 52, and seating again in the reces 51.
The handle 43, as has been stated, serves not only to move the auxiliary ribbon frame between effective and ineffective positions,
but, in the movement from ineffective to effective position, it also acts to feed the auxiliary ribbon 17 to bring a fresh portion thereof to the writing position. For this purpose, the handle 43 has a rearwardly-extending arm 56 which is connected by a pin 57 and crank 58 to a hollow shaft or sleeve 59 rotatably mounted on the rock-shaft 21 and extending substantially the full distance between the end plates 19 and 20. At its left end the hollow shaft 59 is connected by means of a crank 80 and pin 61 to a disk 62 fast to a hub 63 on the left bushing 10. The handle 13 has pivoted upon it a feed-pawl 6-1 for co-operation with the ratchet-wheel 31 that drives the right ribbon-spool 18,
' while the disk 62 has pivoted upon it a similar pawl 65 for co-operation with the ratchet-wheel 31 that drives the left ribbonspool 18, said pawls 6-1 and 65 being urged toward their respective ratchet-wheels by springs 66 coiled around the pivots of said pawls. It will be evidentthat during the time when the handle 43 is moving in a counterclockwise direction (as viewed in Figure 3) relatively to the auxiliary ribbon frame. the pawls (it and 65 will be rocked forward relatively to the ratchet-wheels 31, and that either of them, if permitted to eugage its ratchet-wheel, will rotate the ratchet-wheel to effect a feeding movement ofithe auxiliary ribbon 17.
Provision is made of means for controlling the pawls (vi and (35 to cause them to he alternatively and selectively ellective. F or this purpose, a rock-shaft 67, journaled in the end plates 19 and 20, has fast upon it a cam 68 for engaging the tail er of the pawl (it. to hold it out of engagement with its ratchet-wheel 31, and a second cam (59 for engaging the tail 65 of the pawl 35 to hold it out of engagement with its ratchet-wheel 31. The tails of the pawls 64.- and 65 have cam surfaces 70 upon them for ei'igaging the cams 68 and (19, and these cam surfaces are designed to *ause the disengaging cams ($8 and 69 when effective to maintain their respectiw pawls (it and 65 out of reach of the ratchet-wheels 31 throughout their full movements. The cams 63 and 69 are aranged in different angular positions on the rock-shaft 67. so that in one position of the shaft the cam 63 will be effective and the cam 69 will be ineffective, while in another position of the shaft the reverse will the true. The shaft 67 is yieldingly detained in either of said positions by means of a spring-detent 71 that bears against flats 72 and 73 on the shaft. The shaft 67 is arranged to be. rocked bet ween such positions by a reversing handle T l, journaled on the hub cap 27 of the left end plate and connected to the rockshaft 67 by a link 7 5 and a crank-arm 76 fast on the shaft 67. The reversing handle 7 has an arcuate slot 77 in which a screw 78, threaded into the left end plate 19, is rc ceived to limit the movement of the reversing handle by engagement with the ends of the slot.
Back-stop pawls T9, mounted to swing about the axis of the rock-shaft 21 and urged toward the ratchet-wheels 31 by springs 80, serve to prevent retrograde movements of the ratchet-wheels. Each of these pawls 79 is located to be engaged by the feed-pawl of its ratchet-wheel and to be moved to and maintained in an ineffective position by said feed-pawl when the latter is thrown out of operation by the reversing mechanism.
It will now be understood that when the handle 13 is raised to move the auxiliary ribbon frame to ineffective position. the ribbonsfccdiug mechanism merely moves in unison with the auxiliary ribbon frame without affecting the feed or the tension of the ribbon 17. but that during thefust part of the downward movement of the handle 13, that is, while the pin 45 is moving from the front end of the slot 1-6 to the rear end thereof, the auxiliary ribbon-spool 18 whose feedpawl is effective is rotated to feed the ribbon. The continued downward movement of the handle 13 returns the auxiliary ribbon frame to effective position.
The ribbon 17 may also be fed without elevating the ribbon frame, merely by depress ing the handle 43 from the full-line position said figure.

In a typewrit-ing machine, a ribbonspool-drive mechanism including a ratchetwheel, an axle disposed adjacent said ratchet-wheel and parallel to the axis thereof, a member on said axle mounted for rotation therearound, a driving pawl pivoted on said member for engaging the teeth of said ratchet-wheel, and a back-stop pawl pivoted on said axle and disposed so that the back side of the front end of the drive pawl is in close proximity to said back-stop pawl intermediate its front end and said axle, whereby a small rotary movement of said drive pawl about its pivot will move said back-stop pawl to inettective position.
