PHOTOGRAPHIG PRINTING APPARATUS.
Application. filed February 21, 1923.
This invention relates to photographic printing devices and is herein illustrated as embodied in the portable type of printing device used for printing from the "smaller sizes of negatives.
An object of the invention is to provide, in a device of this character, simple and efficient means for printing a margin or border around a photographic print irrespective of its size or thickness. As illustrated the printing device comprises a frame adapted to support a negative and a mask adjustable to the size of the negative to be printed and a feature of this invention resides in the construction and arrangement of the mask whereby it may bemoved positively into and out of clamping relation to the negative. In accordance with another feature of the invention the frame has provisions for in troducing a negative into the frame from the side thus avoiding the necessity of flexing or otherwise disturbing the mask.
Still further features of the invention reside in the provision of means for holding a photographic print from displacement in the frame while the cover plate of the frame being applied and of supplemental corner masks for masking out local portions of the negative.
The various novel features of construction of the invention will now be described in detail in connection with the accompanying drawings illust ating a preferred embodiment thereof.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the photographic printing device of the present invention and showing the device with the cover plate removed.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device showing the cover plate applied.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating the operation of the device when a plate negative is being used, the plate'being indicated at 100 and the paper at 300.
Fig. i is a sectional view illustrating the operation of the device when a film negative is being used, the film being indicated at 200 and the paper at 300.
In the drawings, 2; represents a rectangular frame ordinarily made of wood and L a glass panel supported on a. shoulder 6 extending along the inside of the frame. A removable cover or backing plate 8, yieldingly held in the frame by the spring members 1.0 is also provided, the device thus far Serial No. 620,384.
described being of the usual and well known type.
In order that this frame may be used to print a white border around a photograph 1. e. print of any size and thickness and which may be adjustable to print any width of boroer an adjustable mask is provided. This mask comprises an angle member l2-1 extending alongtwo adjacent sides of the frame and separate members 16 and 18 e3; ending along the other two sides of the frame, the mask men'iber being preferably, and as herein shown, formed from narrow metal strips. The angle member is held in position in a corner of the frame 2 by a right angle braclret 20 connected to the outer edge of the arm 1% and also to the arm 12, this latter portion of the brackethaving a vertical slot through which a stud 22 projects into the frame 2. The main portion of the bracket 20 is provided with two parallelly disposed inclined slots or guideways 24 which receive two studs 26 carried by a hand slide 28 which is guided for longitudinal and horizontal sliding movement in a groove 30 formed along the inner side of the frame 2'. This slide 28 also has a hand manipulating portion 32 projecting through a horizontal slot 3 cut in the frame member and its end is slidably connected to a l'OC 36 car ried by brackets 38 on the outside of the frame. By moving the slide member 28 along the rod 36 it will thus be seen that the angle member 1214 may be moved bodily toward and away from the light admitting panel 4 to receive negatives of varying thickness and also acts to clamp the negative positively on to the panel.
To supplement the clamping action of the arm 12 of the angle member clamping means operating in conjunction with the arm 12 is also provided. This means comprises a hand lever or slide 4-0 slidably connected to a rod 42 carried by brackets t l along the end of the frame 2 and projecting tl'irough a slot 16 in the frame 2 into the interior of the frame. The end 48 of this slide is formed so as to act as a cam block to engage a block 50 mounted on the arm 12 and having an inclined cam surface wherebymanipulation of the slide 4L0 causes the arm 12 to be forced into clamping relation to a negative supported on the panel 1.
The two members 16 and 1.8 of the mask have theiroutcr ends slidably mounted on and out of clamping relation to the light admitting panel.
